I know it's unfashionable to say this, but my top 3 Bonds would be:

2 Connery
3 Brosnan
The films Dalton propped up were not very good, but he was the best Bond. Craig is a very capable actor and good in the role required for these grittier performances, but he lacks the necessary panache: he seems a bit thuggish sometimes.

I think it can be safely said he had a great outing in Casino Royale and stumbles in a mighty way in Quantum of Solace.
His big weakness as Bond is his Bond is usually too intense to be suave and act effortlessly, which any of the "good Bonds" (Connery, Brosnan, and Moore to varying degrees depending on the film) has had.
Dalton had that same issue with intensity, and Lazenby was just bland.
Craig's 1-2: here's hoping the third time will win out.
I respectfully disagree. I believe Craig is the only Bond to capture the character as Ian Flemming wrote him. That Bond WAS more intense than suave. I think Quantum falters because it's an original story(all the Flemming works have been used-Casino Royale being the last one in that library of work) Daniel Craig's performance, however was spot-on, plus, I really liked the byplay between him and M in this one. I agree with you that I hope the next film's even better. Peace.
That may be true, but Bond has, undeniably, eveolved as a cultural icon since Flemming, and the perception of Bond as the suave, smart, sophisticated agent who gets all the best gadgets and cars and girls is embedded into our popular culture.
Additionally, I would argue that teh MOVIES at this stage, and not necessarily the books, should be considered the firt tome of Bond canon; perhaps a heretical view, but so many others know the Bond from the films and HE is the Bond most the world loves.
I'll grant you that, however, as they haven't given Craig an equipping scene with Q branch, he hasn't really had the opportunity to show what he can do with Bond "Gadgets" yet. I'm very optimistic about this series of movies, and have liked Craig's Bond portrayal very much. Of course, everybody has their own favorites. Roger Moore was my first Bond. I learned to appreciate, and then love Connery, now I go to see Daniel Craig for a great James Bond. Peace.
To me this is how Bond SHOULD be! Not all this "just had the crap beaten out of me but i aint even got a scratch" bollox. Craig does a brilliant job.
He's well built, which you'd expect from somebody that has such military training and what not. He bleeds, he's rebelious, his car gets smashed to peices. This is SO much more true to life and how it'd be IF Bond truly did exist. It's so much more down to earth and that's what makes it work so well.
I really couldn't care who PLAYS Bond, you could have Tom Hanks as Bond the only thing that really matters is who DIRECTS Bond and the rest of the film.
Of course if the actor is complete crap that is a problem but I'd even have Timothy Dalton back as long he came with Martin Campbell directing since he made both Goldeneye and Casino Royale, considered the best bond films of the past 20 years.

Timothy Dalton is the only believable Bond. Had he stuck around for Goldeneye, he would have been the best without a doubt. Brosnan struck gold with Goldeneye, the other 3 of his films are absolute garbage, aside from maybe TWINE.

Me, too, I read Casino Royale myself and when I was watching the film adaptation, Daniel Craig was exactly what Ian Fleming envisioned James Bond to be. Craig is raw, rough and totally unpredictable. The other actors probably never read Fleming's Bond books and decided to emulate the character pretty much how they liked it.

I think you're absolutely right. An actual person that does what James Bond has to be a sadist with profoundly affecting psychological issues. James Bond of course is passionate about protecting the innocent and changing the world for the better so he uses his strong will and exteme intellignce to channel his impulses into making him a more effective instrument for good. You're damn right. Bond is supposed to be a cold person, like you said raw, rough, and unpredictable. Not like Moore or Brosnan or Lazenby, i think it's kind of funny that they cast them because i can't see any of them able to hold their own in any kind of fight. Whereas Connery, Dalton, and Craig definately are believable. That's why i like Craig the most because i think he plays the cold killer part really well.
Both Brosnan and Lazenby were very physical. Lazenby got the role because of ability to do fight scenes convincingly. Watch Brosnan in The Fourth Protocol. Brosnan got weak scripts during his tenure with the exception of Goldeneye. Hopefully, the producers do not screw it up for Daniel or he will end up in the same position as Brosnan.

Well, Craig plays Bond just like Bond acts in the Casino Royale Novel, he is not a professional at the start, he just got the promotion to 00 agent. The original Bond was going to be Roger Moore as he was Ian Flemings favourite choice for Dr. No's Bond. Anyway, whoever the best Bond is is only up to your personal favourite and choice, mine is Brosnan as he was the Bond when I was young and the first Bond I saw. Also I thought Craig was good in Casino Royale, he makes a good gritty Bond.
Craig is not the worst Bond and he did not make the two best bond movies of all time. The two best are Goldfinger and FRWL. these are followed by Goldeneye and Casino Royale. QOS is almost as bad as DAD. The Living Daylights was a very good Bond movie. The audience was just not ready for a serious Bond at that time, although TLD would have done a lot better if Brosnan had starred in it.
@amphibole12 yes craig is the worst bond, in my opinion. He isnt smooth like the other bonds, there r no special gadgets in his movies, and there is "martini shaken not sturred". I mean, he isnt even black haired like the other bonds. But the movies that craig made were the best becuz they were more entertaining and showed what agent life would really b like. My thoughts on the Craig controversy:
I think it can be safely said he had a great outing in Casino Royale and stumbles in a mighty way in Quantum of Solace.
His big weakness as Bond is his Bond is usually too intense to be suave and act effortlessly, which any of the "good Bonds" (Connery, Brosnan, and Moore to varying degrees depending on the film) has had.
Dalton had that same issue with intensity, and Lazenby was just bland.
Craig's 1-2: here's hoping the third time will win out.

I respectfully disagree. I believe Craig is the only Bond to capture the character as Ian Flemming wrote him. That Bond WAS more intense than suave. I think Quantum falters because it's an original story(all the Flemming works have been used-Casino Royale being the last one in that library of work) Daniel Craig's performance, however was spot-on, plus, I really liked the byplay between him and M in this one. I agree with you that I hope the next film's even better. Peace.

That may be true, but Bond has, undeniably, eveolved as a cultural icon since Flemming, and the perception of Bond as the suave, smart, sophisticated agent who gets all the best gadgets and cars and girls is embedded into our popular culture.
Additionally, I would argue that teh MOVIES at this stage, and not necessarily the books, should be considered the firt tome of Bond canon; perhaps a heretical view, but so many others know the Bond from the films and HE is the Bond most the world loves.

I'll grant you that, however, as they haven't given Craig an equipping scene with Q branch, he hasn't really had the opportunity to show what he can do with Bond "Gadgets" yet. I'm very optimistic about this series of movies, and have liked Craig's Bond portrayal very much. Of course, everybody has their own favorites. Roger Moore was my first Bond. I learned to appreciate, and then love Connery, now I go to see Daniel Craig for a great James Bond. Peace.

And i respectfully agree with you.
To me this is how Bond SHOULD be! Not all this "just had the crap beaten out of me but i aint even got a scratch" bollox. Craig does a brilliant job.
He's well built, which you'd expect from somebody that has such military training and what not. He bleeds, he's rebelious, his car gets smashed to peices. This is SO much more true to life and how it'd be IF Bond truly did exist. It's so much more down to earth and that's what makes it work so well.

I really couldn't care who PLAYS Bond, you could have Tom Hanks as Bond the only thing that really matters is who DIRECTS Bond and the rest of the film.
Of course if the actor is complete crap that is a problem but I'd even have Timothy Dalton back as long he came with Martin Campbell directing since he made both Goldeneye and Casino Royale, considered the best bond films of the past 20 years.
QoS was a stinking wreak due to a terrible script, ill-suited director and rushed schedule.

Timothy Dalton is the only believable Bond. Had he stuck around for Goldeneye, he would have been the best without a doubt. Brosnan struck gold with Goldeneye, the other 3 of his films are absolute garbage, aside from maybe TWINE.

well, Craig isnt the best, all the bonds are good in their ways. Its not about who's the best, its about your own taste, because all are good. (not all ofc, lazenby suck) pierce got a cold style, and kill in a stylish way. craig is a more brutal bond, less style. Me, too, I read Casino Royale myself and when I was watching the film adaptation, Daniel Craig was exactly what Ian Fleming envisioned James Bond to be. Craig is raw, rough and totally unpredictable. The other actors probably never read Fleming's Bond books and decided to emulate the character pretty much how they liked it.

His entire job is being an assassin for the British government brach called MI-6, and his licence proves it. He can do anything to accomplished the mission, that includes murder without repercussions, it was present in all Ian Fleming's novels all the way to his last one he wrote Octopussy and The Living Daylights short story.

I think you're absolutely right. An actual person that does what James Bond has to be a sadist with profoundly affecting psychological issues. James Bond of course is passionate about protecting the innocent and changing the world for the better so he uses his strong will and exteme intellignce to channel his impulses into making him a more effective instrument for good. I don't think that acknowledging his dark side makes him a simple thug at all and it makes him a more relevant character.

You're damn right. Bond is supposed to be a cold person, like you said raw, rough, and unpredictable. Not like Moore or Brosnan or Lazenby, i think it's kind of funny that they cast them because i can't see any of them able to hold their own in any kind of fight. Whereas Connery, Dalton, and Craig definately are believable. That's why i like Craig the most because i think he plays the cold killer part really well.

Both Brosnan and Lazenby were very physical. Lazenby got the role because of ability to do fight scenes convincingly. Watch Brosnan in The Fourth Protocol. Brosnan got weak scripts during his tenure with the exception of Goldeneye. Hopefully, the producers do not screw it up for Daniel or he will end up in the same position as Brosnan.

Of course Craig kills for pleasure.He says Bond James Bond terrible and he doesn't say shaken not stirred.He haven't hi tech cars like all other Bonds.The gunbarrel is at the end and Quantum of Solace hasn't the original music of James Bond. Craig was the worst Bond but he made the two best bond movies of all time. Brosnan was the best Bond but was next in line behind Craig for the best movies. Roger Moore was the original Bond and the second best Bond of all time he goes next followed by Connery. I dont know y any of you think that Dalton beats the first four i meantioned becuz he was basically a fill in until another Bond came along. His movies did the worst out of all of the Bonds.

Connery quit after his 5th apperence as bond in 1967 not second one and lazenby came in played bond in1969 for one movie. Connery came back in 1971 for a sixth time. connery also played 007 in 1983 in a non official bond film.

just becuz hes realistic doesnt mean hes bond. Bond started way back when connery was young. The bond idea started back then. The job and view of what an agent is has changed over that time. It doesnt mean though that bond changes along with it. Thats like saying that the tv series 24 is now going to become an action comedy. It just doesnt fit. Well, Craig plays Bond just like Bond acts in the Casino Royale Novel, he is not a professional at the start, he just got the promotion to 00 agent. The original Bond was going to be Roger Moore as he was Ian Flemings favourite choice for Dr. No's Bond. Anyway, whoever the best Bond is is only up to your personal favourite and choice, mine is Brosnan as he was the Bond when I was young and the first Bond I saw. Also I thought Craig was good in Casino Royale, he makes a good gritty Bond.

Craig is not the worst Bond and he did not make the two best bond movies of all time. The two best are Goldfinger and FRWL. these are followed by Goldeneye and Casino Royale. QOS is almost as bad as DAD. The Living Daylights was a very good Bond movie. The audience was just not ready for a serious Bond at that time, although TLD would have done a lot better if Brosnan had starred in it.

@amphibole12 yes craig is the worst bond, in my opinion. He isnt smooth like the other bonds, there r no special gadgets in his movies, and there is "martini shaken not sturred". I mean, he isnt even black haired like the other bonds. But the movies that craig made were the best becuz they were more entertaining and showed what agent life would really b like. The other bonds would get punched in the face and then there would b nothing, no bleeding or bruises or anything like that.
