At her best, Moffo was one of the most idiomatic and national musical phrase-makers in Italian opera. And her voice always had that tinge of sadness in it. This makes me wish Moffo had done this role in her prime. Another recording of this aria I love is Callas' from 1963. The voice is a wreck, but still she finds more music and emotion in this scene than anyone else.
Can anyone surmise why Sutherland, as brilliantly as she sang this role (probably one of her best), never attempted this cabaletta? I'm sure she would have done it magnificently........
Thanks for posting. Great roulades. I was stunned how good it was until she tossed in that final high note -- she could never stay away from those, come what may. Otherwise, good for her.
Thank God there are recordings like this that exist to document (even more) what a brilliant talent she had. The voice can soar - be short lived - but brilliant while it soars. And no one can take that away from Anna Moffo. When she soared, there was no one like her. Brava, Anna.
Patjan92, much belated appreciation for directing me towards this clip. Not typical Moffo fare, but beautifully and brilliantly sung! Caballe and Sutherland are apparently not the only ones capable of performing this music to perfection.

This wonderfull tinge of sadness in her voice had only Mdm. Moffo. In this aria she shows us also a dramatic voice.
She was in all devine, with a voice of an angel. Very sad that she had gone.
