One jsut like that, same color and everything once stood up on its tail and began to chase me quickly....they sliver fast! you wouldn't expect it...trust me. I know...
@UFOsaucer1 Cottonmouths don't chase people, and can't rear up very far. Most likely you were between it and and where it wanted to be. There have been studies that show cottonmouths will bluff their way past a potential predator to get where they want to go. They don't actually want to chase you, snakes hate people more than vice versa.
spooky, looks like the one that got my step dad. whithin ten minutes he was in plumanary distress and more than likely would have died if we had not been 12 miles from the hospital in waurica okla (they treat the most snake bites in the us) they had the antivenom on hand after 17 vials two weeks of suffering he still lost part of his hand,
Grandpa got bit by one back in the early 1920's. Was feeling for catfish under the banks of the Sabine River and Caddo in LA. His partner got so scared, ran off, leaving him. Grandpa just pulled out pocket knife, immediately cut open the fang marks, sucked out venom, and walked back home. Also got sprayed by a skunk while out coon hunting.
@EcoPaintSpecialists1 Grandpa got dry bit. Snakes prefer not to use their venom when they don't have to, and that cottonmouth didn't have the opportunity to use its conventional methods of warning. If the snake had injected venom, sucking on the bite would not have done a thing for it, and your grandfather could have easily lost mobility in the affected limb.
@AtarahDerek There is some truth to this, being "dry bit", but knowing he did get some venom, in that his right index finger was partially paralyzed the rest of his entire life, which was the whole time I knew him.
they are all over west houston hike and bike trails- they will show you thier pink mouth- not too aggressive until you start screwing with it and then they can get a mad on quick.
they will bite the snot out of you or your dog if provoked and then you are in for some real hell. Steve Irwin said the cotton mouth was one snake he did not want to handle. the body was so thick and strong it could come back up its length and bite him. he said it was just impossible to tell if it was gonna strike.
