  • Now we must port it to a modded wii!

  • I have Portal CD... Can i use it to install? Or must it be Download

  • what wre the settings on? i have got to run my portal without any graphic or lag errors.

  • does the compositor mess with this at all?

  • a while ago when i had a mac. i used steam to get portal. but then i had to get rid of my mac so i got an acer with ubuntu. i got steam and got portal back but all i get is a black screen with a mouse and noise and i know that the mouse is working because i actually got into game play but i still could not see anything. i used playonlinux.

  • nvm, fixed it.

  • so i updated wine, now it won't even load. and portal now went from starting, with graphical errors, to not starting at all. help?

  • Hey, mesaynaysayer, I have the same specs you do except I have a GB of RAM. I got portal to run through the latest release of wine in Ubuntu 8.04 by setting the following launch options through steam: -silent -window -novid -dxlevel 80 -width 1024 -height 768 . Just make sure not to set the width and height larger than your screen resolution. The only problem I have now is that sometimes when I am looking at two portals the screen flashes white. But that should get you closer. Hope this helps.

  • hey dude im running arch with a 3ghz hyperthread pentium 4 and 512mb ddr2 memory and a 128mb ati video card with the proprietary driver and i try to play this game with wine, but every time the portal opens, the game goes nuts and gets blurry and i cant see anything, did you run in to this problem and i would be forever grateful if you could tell me how to fix it! :)

  • Would this work on a MacBook With 2 GB ram,

    Intel GMA-X1300 graphics

and a 2.4 GHZ CPU running ubuntu?

  • I always get black boxes! There is no transparency!

  • i get the same thing. i'm updating wine so i could fix that.

  • I figured it out! steam start options and put in -dxlevel 81

  • cool, thanks. Yeah I tried this, "-silent -window -novid -dxlevel 80 -width 1024 -height 768", but it still didn't work. so i then took it out and all of a sudden, it worked perfectly. now i just need to figure out how to install glc to capture. i don't know a lot about linux. i rarely use it. if you know how to install it, that would be very helpful. thank you.

  • to capture the screen? I use GTK-recordmydesktop. It's in the ubuntu repositories

  • oh, ok cool. yeah i tried that, i couldn't get it to record. like it said it recorded, then i saved it, the file never showed up and at one point, it gave me an error with my sound card. was very confusing. but ok, cool. thanks.

  • every time i try and use wine, an installation will go through to near the end and then stop.... so i end up with a program installed that is unusable.....

  • you have 64b CPU ? or 64b linux???

    That is problem....

  • Damn....how shoud i use Wine ? i ve installed it but didn t make it work ! :(

  • depends on how good your computer is... it doesnt work on mine at all... and i only know how to go about using it on ubuntu

  • wheres the proof thats on linux??

  • You don't need proof. It's a well known fact.

  • @Timotay where's the need for proof?

  • whats your computer config?

and you say there really was no extra tweeking involved? somehow, the only thing I can get to work with Wine is that notepad that is delivered with it by default...

  • gentoo ~amd64 (2.6.24-gentoo), NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT and I was using wine 0.9.51 when I recorded that. Still works with 0.9.54.

  • hmmm.... I don't understand it... it should work with mine, too... but it doesn't...

oh, and is there any possibility to have wine handle .ink shortcuts?, like, with properties and start options enabled.

  • oh, ignore that last post, I kinda figured it out (runs for me only with CrossOver)

how can I tell a program to run in fullscreen? when I start portal, I get the intro movies all fine, but when the game itself begins, I only see a black window (which is the game, though, I managed to get to level 4, don't ask me how, without seeing anything)

did you get any similar problems?

  • I can't get GLC to record like it should with Wine... did you tweak anything special?
