a while ago when i had a mac. i used steam to get portal. but then i had to get rid of my mac so i got an acer with ubuntu. i got steam and got portal back but all i get is a black screen with a mouse and noise and i know that the mouse is working because i actually got into game play but i still could not see anything. i used playonlinux.
Hey, mesaynaysayer, I have the same specs you do except I have a GB of RAM. I got portal to run through the latest release of wine in Ubuntu 8.04 by setting the following launch options through steam: -silent -window -novid -dxlevel 80 -width 1024 -height 768 . Just make sure not to set the width and height larger than your screen resolution. The only problem I have now is that sometimes when I am looking at two portals the screen flashes white. But that should get you closer. Hope this helps.
hey dude im running arch with a 3ghz hyperthread pentium 4 and 512mb ddr2 memory and a 128mb ati video card with the proprietary driver and i try to play this game with wine, but every time the portal opens, the game goes nuts and gets blurry and i cant see anything, did you run in to this problem and i would be forever grateful if you could tell me how to fix it! :)
cool, thanks. Yeah I tried this, "-silent -window -novid -dxlevel 80 -width 1024 -height 768", but it still didn't work. so i then took it out and all of a sudden, it worked perfectly. now i just need to figure out how to install glc to capture. i don't know a lot about linux. i rarely use it. if you know how to install it, that would be very helpful. thank you.
oh, ok cool. yeah i tried that, i couldn't get it to record. like it said it recorded, then i saved it, the file never showed up and at one point, it gave me an error with my sound card. was very confusing. but ok, cool. thanks.
every time i try and use wine, an installation will go through to near the end and then stop.... so i end up with a program installed that is unusable.....
and you say there really was no extra tweeking involved? somehow, the only thing I can get to work with Wine is that notepad that is delivered with it by default...
oh, ignore that last post, I kinda figured it out (runs for me only with CrossOver)
how can I tell a program to run in fullscreen? when I start portal, I get the intro movies all fine, but when the game itself begins, I only see a black window (which is the game, though, I managed to get to level 4, don't ask me how, without seeing anything)
Now we must port it to a modded wii!

You don't need proof. It's a well known fact.

@Timotay where's the need for proof?

gentoo ~amd64 (2.6.24-gentoo), NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT and I was using wine 0.9.51 when I recorded that. Still works with 0.9.54.

hmmm.... I don't understand it... it should work with mine, too... but it doesn't...
oh, and is there any possibility to have wine handle .ink shortcuts?, like, with properties and start options enabled.
