  • This woman had the most amazing back and arms of anyone I have ever seen. I didn't like her but wow she could dance!

  • She danced very well the music is and of course the music is timeless but does anyone else hear the traffic passing the theater? In the beginning there's a honking then continuous vehicles driving past.

Tht must have really sucked, to put your heart and soul out there and have focus pulled from you by a car!

  • Beautiful, almost of essential dancing resolving***!

  • her hands are like actual wings!

  • @bloomritwika Yes, she talked in detail in our masterclass about the use of the fingers to create the image of the tips of the swan's wings. Amazing product of the Vaganova, when true artistry outshone 6 o'clock arabesques!

  • The ballerina of her time!!!!! A real ballerina!

  • @sa65cn1

I so agree! She had it ALL. What she lacked - if anything - was simply not worth having. What a ballerina! They just don't make 'em like that any more.

  • such a legend and awesome ballerina of her time..and the highway noises are the person's tv you can tell its being taped from a tv ...but anyways always beautiful she was!!! my teacher actually boarded with her at one point and said she was very sweet...

  • Beautiful, legendary prima ballerina....AND a diva b**ch!

  • Why is she dancing ballet next to a highway?

  • I personally do not like Anna Pavlova . . . i know, i know, i'm the only one in the world. I picture death as peaceful & graceful (if only it could be for everyone) and Natalia's interpretations looks as if she is surrendering & not fighting death. I love it (: <3

  • Esthetically more pleasing and arms better. But Anna Pavlova gave a greater punch emotionally.

  • Its just not right!

  • i have a lot of ballerina friends that are recovering from anorexia and bulimia and so on... good luck! stay healthy... :)

  • So amazing! This is really really hard to do!!

  • i am a ballet strudent too!!! and this is very insparaitional ( i know i cant spell but oh well)

  • Alright,so I am a twelve year old ballerina in training. I weigh 123 pounds. { So proud! I weighed 130 a few weeks ago! :D } and I am 5'4. However,we'll just say my body is built...squat. I have short legs and a long torso, but everywhere else,my body is great for ballet. I hate my legs. I am just wondering, what would be my perfect dancer's weight?

  • @KLOKLOKLO456

Ballet as others will point out is about much more than body weight or shape. I too am 5' 4". I once starved down to 70 pounds. I almost lost my life as well as any ability to dance. Focussing on weight alone is a dead end. Certainly keep a watch on weight but work hard to develop your technique and artistry. These, and your musicality and understanding of the roles you undertake, are what really matters.

  • @mithrilmoon1

    oops typo - matter! lol

  • great musicality and emotion! loved it! (:

  • She crosses the line between artistry and indulgence. I saw her live many times. She never did it for me. Not at all.

  • ...such a beautiful dance. <3

  • I could feel the sadness,her sorrow...very beautiful indeed!

  • Natalia is an excellent dancer, but I prefer Anna Pavlova's version, mainly due to the fact that I am a diehard Anna Pavlova fan.

  • Well since there's a bit of a weight conversation here,I thought I'd pitch in my 2 cents. I'm a bit chubbier than the other girls (in ballet), at 5"3 and 120 pounds, age 13. I'm actually the size of a perfectly normal teenage girl, it's just a lot of the other girls are a little underweight. I don't think weight matters, I think it is the heart and effort you put in and your level of commitment. I love ballet to pieces, and I work hard. I haven't been dancing my whole life, but I feel like it :)

  • @TaylorNicoleCollins ---see my answers below

  • Balance and mind control

In art you eat to stay alive and think to be aware...

then your dream comes to LIFE !

  • ex ballet dancer here. I was 5ft 0ins & 7st.7lbs if that helps !

  • @Annicathryn, as a ballet student myself I am always trying to get to the right weight too...but I think a good

ballerina body is the one with low percentage of fat. Is it your case? if you look at the mirror and you see a high percentage of fat maybe you shoud to some aerobic exercices like walking or running but you should go to the pediatric doctor and ask (you are 15 only)...good luck

  • @vilavelhense ok thankyou, i do see quite a high percentage of fat and i have been trying to lose wieght by eating healthily and exercising but it seems to be too much for my body, i have become dehydrated and getting migranes and my body doesnt seem to be used to all the exercise i am doing, what shall i do? xx

  • @Annicathryn , I recommend you to go to a pediatrist and ask for blood test to check if you have any

problems concerning sugar level, cholesterol, and blood test for thyroid (to check if you don't have

hypothyroidism). To hydrate is easy: drink water away from the lunch time...good luck

  • @Annicathryn Hey! I am a ballet student myself, and I know how easy it is to get over focused on weight. Be careful. So many terrible things can happen if you are to thin. I suggest you speak to a pediatrician before doing anything drastic. Remember that there are many different body types, so one person's ideal weight will not be the same as the next persons. Try to focus on balletically shaping your muscles instead of watching your weight. Also remember that muscle weighs more than fat!

  • @Annicathryn what do you mean ?? there is no correct weight ... be strong, healthy and passionate about art/dance and you'll be fine :)

  • @FyreBalletDancer Sooooo right! Training many hours a week will keep weight artificially low in any case, so all would-be ballerinas should eat plenty of fresh, sensible food and not skimp on protein or strength will evaporate. Cut out ALL JUNK FOOD & DRINK! There is plenty of expert advice available for all 'athletes' these days, so no excuse/reason for girls to obsess about weight, unless they are obese. Let's stamp out potential anorexia NOW.

  • @Annicathryn You are not a ballerina. A ballerina is the best dancer in a reputable, prestigious company. Anna Pavlova was a ballerina. You are a ballet dancer, or a student.

  • @ArtisticallyLinda I am soooo glad to think soneone else might be as fed up as I am with ppl claiming to be ballerinas just beacuse they take ballet classes! On that basis NP too IS a ballerina, for pete's sake! It does so demean the profession and helps keep ppl ignorant of the years of hard training needed. Would someone taking one or two piano lessons per week claim to be a concert pianist? I think not.

  • a busca da perfeição... a expressividade absoluta...

    zocas

  • i believe she can fly

  • breathtakingly beautiful! thanks for posting.

  • how come she was not designated as "prima ballerina assoluta"?

  • She is all of that and yet the sound of the car or airplane in the background is reminiscent of her own flight. Funnhy I love the dancers who defected because they shared ballet with us and created new schools in the West, but I love those whose stayed and supported the art from home.

  • It hurts to watch her! she's INCREDIBLE!!!!

  • wow! amaizing arm work!

  • have you people watched anna pavlova's dying swan, she is the true dying swan

  • absolutely beautiful. shes the best.

  • With all due respect, there are no 12 year old ballerinas. That title is earned & is used only for the top dancers. The correct term is 12 year old ballet ancer.

Thank you so much for posting Markarova's Dying Swan. She is perfect.

  • Now I realize whom Oksana Baiul was copying...

  • A sparkling diamond!

  • Une gestuelle très étudiée qui ne m'arrache pourtant pas de larmes...

  • Makarova is one of the consummate prima-ballerinas of all time. I can't watch her Dying Swan without tearing up....it's so beautiful. When I was young I studied ballet with the intent on becoming the next Pavlova. Unfortunately, I had the determination and talent, but fouettes were my downfall. It was heartbreaking, but I still love the ballet and always will.

  • She is absolutely lovely, one of my favorites indeed

  • aaaaaaaa.... wordless.. patay na cguro 2ng ballerinang ito..

  • Wasn't she perfect in this?

  • beautiful

  • to me, natalia makorova is the best odette of our generation!

  • god her arms are so amazing.

  • I see a trace of Pavlova in her.

  • from source special machines were used to facilitate the arm movements

  • She was an incredible dancer, double jointed....and apparently dropped on her tushie once because she pissed off her male partner, Rudolf Nureyev. Well, he had a temper too.

  • How much should I weigh to look good being a ballerina if my height is 170 cm ?

  • so beautiful.

  • ummm. beautifulballetbabe. am 14 and i am in track and a pre-professional ballet company. I eat a LOT but i am still 5 foot 10 inches and 110 pounds. i have never been told i need to quit something because of my weight. I burn off so much naturally from all the exercise i do, that i have never watched my weight or went on a diet. so dont worry about it

  • Don't know a thing about ballet, but oh, those feet! Like slivers of silver and sugar on a starlit lake.

  • well said

  • @tigerboy1966

As you already know, prior knowledge of ballet is not essential! Natalia Makarova was, I believe, the greatest classical ballerina of the 20th Century. I cannot compare her to say Tamara Karsavina, nor yet, to Olga Spessivtseva. But I believe that Makarova embodied everything a prima ballerina assoluta should. Everything about her draws they eye and the heart. True genius, timeless artistry.

  • you dont have to be skinny to be a professional ballerina because when you dance as much as a professional ballerina, you become skinny.its not that you have to be skinny to do ballet, tou become skinny because you do ballet.

ps.shes amazing but i really wanna see anna pavlova dancing this .its not on youtube.... :(

  • @Liv4muzzik it is just not so great qualty of course but its there

  • Yes, it is on youtube

  • the diva of balet

  • There's something poignant about this video of grace with the audio of cars going by or camera noise, something grinding along obliviously in the background. What do we miss as life goes on?

  • My God How Graceful this woman is... !!! Lovely! Perfection! :-)

  • @GracefulBallerina1 the body types acceptable for a professional career in ballet are becoming more diverse but it really depends on your height. if you are twelve and about 5'3 then about 95-100 lbs is perfectly acceptable. i was 5'5 and 103. don't think skinny think trim. if you think skinny then you will never be happy with yourself. ask a doctor what would be your ideal weight and then make that your goal. i have lost a little weight since i started pointe and now i'm 5'7 1/2 and about 102

  • @GracefulBallerina1 there is no correct weight. everyone's bodies, even ballerina's, are different. some girl's are skinny and possibly a tad underweight and dance ballet, some are a healthy weight and dance. some are a tad overweight and dance. don't try to be exactly like the professionals, who are tall and twig thin. be yourself and enjoy ballet, in your body.

  • Fantastic ! Sou do Brasil e é um presente vê-la dançando, um sonho! parabéns!!!

  • If you get too skinny, you can't dance. You get to a point where your bones will be too weak to support you, and you begin to lose muscle mass. My doctor said if I lose any more weight, I will have to quit dance. I'm 5'6 and 112 lbs. Ballerinas are fit and healthy. It takes strength to dance. Weight has nothing to do w/ how well you dance, unless you're obese.

  • THANK you! I loathe it when people say a professional ballerina is "too skinny". If she was "too skinny," she couldn't dance that beautifully!

  • @beautifulballetbabe I'm 5'8" and 108 and dancing, haven't heard any negative things about me having to quit, but it's true what you say.

  • @beautifulballetbabe you are absolutely right. The other thing that can happen is that if you lose so much body fat that you stop haviing periods, you have effectively gone into "menopause" and you will not have the estrogen that protects your bones. You will get osteoporosis, stress fractures, & can kiss your career good-bye.

    Mangia, mangia!

  • @beautifulballetbabe Im think the same

  • @beautifulballetbabe true. But weight does have a bit importance. Who wants to see a chubby Odile,Odette,or Auora? It defies the purpose of this beautiful princess like girl

  • @balletluve I agree, a certain leanness has become an undeniable part f the ballet aesthetic. However, my comment was to deter those who believe that almost all ballet dancers have some form of eating disorder, when in reality the rigors of their job make this an impossibility.

The ballet dancer has little fat, yet maintains a healthy (if not slightly underweight) body mass due to their lean body muscle that allows them to execute the physical feats of ballet.

  • yeah thats true, but being skinny doe shelp. I mean, you never see a fat ballerina! But i do appreciate that you do need the soul of a dancer and I certainly do!

  • The correct weight is the natural weight for a healthy 12 year old girl. There is no "perfect size" for a 12 year old ballerina. This crazy notion is what started the whole anorexia craze. You don't have to be skinny to dance beautifully and have a beautiful soul - DANCE BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE!

  • That's not because you are underweight that you eat nothing, I'm ever eating, all the day and i'm a dancer but i'm 1.95 meter with 73 kg!

  • 10kg? are you serious!!??

  • wow, the elegance and grace of this ballerina is absolutley exquisite! Can someone please tell me the Correct weight in kiograms a 12 year old ballerina should be? PLEASE TELL ME PLEEEEEASE!

  • has to be 10 or sth. ;)

  • well, it depends on the hight...I have a ballet coleague of 12 years old for exemple who is 1:65 and she has 53 Kg...for me there is no right weight, the important thing is to have low percentage of fat and to be healthy, eat good stuff...

  • It depends on your height

  • There is no "correct weight."

Weight has nothing to do with the passion and soul you put into dancing. You could be the skinniest and most beautiful girl in the world and not have the heart to be a dancer.

  • @GracefulBallerina1 why would you need to know that? Your 12 and already worried about your weight? Get a grip.

  • Oh, lost elegance and beauty,

    certes, life's agony and ecstasy.

  • Elegance and beauty,

    Life's agony and ecstasy.

  • Fragile, undulating wings of strength,

Delicate threads of life's loves embrace.

  • wow

i saw the anna pavlova performance video and didn't think anything could compare, but this is exquisite.

i don't think the two can be compared, the two are so different

  • I think this version of Makarova is the most silmilar Ana Pavlova's spirit Fokine coreografy, she captured her so well, magical and fantastic!!!

  • It seems to be the most real swam that felt to earth. It is an amazing performance, I thought that Tamara Toumanova was number one in this dance, now, I do not know what to think. I have seen them both in the theatre. The recording was very good, considering the time that it was made. Love it.

  • Bravissimo Natalia! Exquisite ... magnificent ... beautiful beyond words

  • there is something about the quaility of the video that really adds to the emotion...it fits perfectly and adds to the beauty

  • I have seen other videos of ballerinas dance this. Well Natalie is definately the winner! What grace! If you don't believe me, take time off and see a real swan in action. Natalie has capture the feeling of the swan.

  • beautiful!

My teacher, Kathleen Crofton brought her to our school,/class, I was 9 yrs old.

  • amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

she escapes the limits of reality.

perfect technique thrilling interpretation magic moments...

    no words

  • Simply....Fantastic!!!!

  • it's being filmed off a black and white tv set idiot.

  • Does anyone know the date, location and method of recording this piece? The foggy texture, background noise and sound of this recording makes it her best performance of this piece for me.

Her supremely poignant and breathtaking interpretation, with added traffic sounds converts it into a space between two worlds and two times.

Within each of us resides a dying swan.

  • so beautiful and so sad, it tries to stay up in flight and eventually folds up in death.

    :'(

  • I totally agree. I don't think that most ballerinas get the point of this piece. They try to make it too pretty and turn it into a variation from The Swan Lake. This however is what Fokin and Pavlova delivered from the start - the agony and the ugliness of death.

  • da schnarcht ja jemand im hintergrund xDD

  • this is not a creature it is a swan

  • I lovee natalia makarova... she's pretty good at dancing... an awesome ballerina

  • She does it like Pavlova. It is good.

  • so beautiful

  • excelnte... excelente!!!

  • her arms movement looks so fluent, rly like wings - amazing job !!

  • Brilliant!!!

  • fabulous! thank you for downloading

  • WOW! her hands are amazing, i swear in the begining they where rubber. such elgants....she is the best i've seen so far

  • Very, very elegant and very beautiful indeed.

  • that performance made me cry....

  • Incredible!

  • WOW! This woman is AMAZING!

  • THE russian legend.

thank you natalia. you are the best dancer that Russia could ever know. i love you for that.

    please. dance forever!

  • GORGEOUS!

  • one thing is, anna has more grace in her

arms than natalia but still beautiful:)

  • I love her. But where is she dancing that all that traffic noise is in the background?

  • It is because I have recorded from my TV...

  • Ehh, it's is good, but compared to Anna's, not the best. But then again, everything compared to Anna's is not up to par. How beautiful though, simplistic and awkward, but beautiful.

  • fashionballetNYC.... you got to be fair.. Anna's arms are just flailing around crudely compared to Natalia's beautifully rippling undulating arms. That is very skillful act to do! Also, Anna just drops down ungracefully whereas Natalia savors every moment and every movement. That is a beautiful choreography . You got to admit that!

  • I still prefer Anna's performance of it, but Natalia still performed it beautifully too.

  • agree

  • what a talent! she is fantastic.

  • those arms are gorgeous! make me cry

  • i get chills evry time i watch her wonderful danceing!!! natalia Makarova is one of the wemon i look up to. she is amazing!

  • actually i heard car's horning at 0:14 !

  • My favorite Dying Swan... definitely : )

  • so beautiful ! so amazingly beautiful !

i have no words to describe what i feel

    after watching it !

  • her arms are pretty.

  • Not as beautiful as Anna Pavlova's, but I love it, I know it's difficult =) ! Good job !

  • elegant...i love it.

  • beautiful,,,,and the lighting is interesting as it created a halo around her.,,,,

    great clip,,,,thanx.

  • LINDA

  • her arms... in the beginning... looks like rubber or something... amazing!!:D:D

  • ma è vera?

  • porco cane

  • Che stupido che 6!

  • porco cane era x dire madonna quanto è brava, stupita. perfetto!

  • Pavlova has a enourmous dramatic expression that touch me deep. I love Makarova, but not in this variation. My feeling is more Lopatkina.

  • BEAUTIFUL

  • I totally agree with you blandeenka. No one compares to Maya!!!

  • absolutely perfect, that's how it should look like! A thousand times better than Pavlova, but well, these were the old times... lovely dance!

  • It doesn't compare to Maya!!! She absolutely does it the very best.

  • Is she still dancing?

  • this makes me feel so bad about myself. i learned this variation but i looked like a freaking idiot waving her arms around aimlessly while shuffling along in pointe shoes.

  • i don't like this version... her arms really bug me.

  • Well that's because she's supposed to be a dying swan; she's trying to fly again but she's struggling.

  • i know.... but i like bigger arms and a swan dosn't falp that much

  • these are the old times! just accept what the professional here is doing! FYI shes dying! so shes struggling so hard to fly again. THATS WHY SHES WAVING HER ARMS LIKE THAT.

  • this is sooo beautiful, she is such an amazing dancer.

  • She's beautiful, I would love to learn this variation, even though it would never be as good as hers.

  • I've cried during giselle and just watching this clip made me cry

  • I love Natalia's dancing, too, but I keep hearing something in the background, like snoring. Is it my imagination?

  • it sounds like a old film reel lol but idk

  • she makes me cry...

    so beautiful.

  • makarova and alicia alonso for ever will be the best in ballets

  • Great! Wonderful! Thank you for sharing.

  • I am a 71 years old man, had cancer operation three years ago. And did not feel well today, probably should not bring this video up this moment! And I did. "No one can escape the fate!" I was thinking. dancewu dot net

  • I liked the way she finally accepted the fate gracefully bowed out of this world she enjoyed living so much up to that last moment!dancewu dot net

  • Amazing.

  • She looks as if she's floating! <3

  • oh I love it...so perfect!!

  • Beautiful! dancewu dot net
