Probably the greatest Rock voice ever. What a band Free were, they had everything to Fraser amazing bass lines, Kirkes awesome drumming and Kossoff...well i don't think there is a word in the english dictionary that can describe his talent, he was just that good in my opinion.
wow great band and vid! If you like this you may like us, we're a 70's classic rock band from london living in LA! check us out and let us know what you think!
knowing john mellonhead made it into the hall of fame before Paul Rodgers makes me fucking sick! Jann Wenner and the rest of the board at the HOF have their heads completely up their fucking asses!!!!!
i was at this as well right in the middle towards the front how things where diffrent then live was nothing but fun and games was 20 and life was a bll now moving towards 60 and still dream of theses days of no worries or cares and just getting out your head and haveing fun
Here they performed in front of many people, but they couldn't get more than 50 to 75 to attend their free show at my high school. I was one of the attendees.ALL RIGHT NOW.................FREE
That would be a crime of ignorance on the part of those foolish enough to pass up on something like that. I wouldn't miss a chance to see Paul Rogers...anywhere...anytime...ever...
this song changed how bands played... no one was doing what free was doing..... i remember hearing this song, i was 14, and in a band........... we all played this song... lol, marshall stacks, and standing right in front of them... musta been loud....
Yeah that was Hard Rock when Hard Rock wasnt around. I wish people would quit saying Sabbath was the beginning. Sabbath was good but it was just low tuned hippy music with dark undertones. Free was HARD ROCK.
Sabbath didn't start the heavy metal sound but they capitilized on it, along with Purple and Zeppelin (at least from the UK). Free was basically a rock band with a few heavy rock songs..
I have no fucking idea what you all are talking about with hippies & peace and all that shit, but this LIVE version of ALL RIGHT NOW fucking ROCKS. Hippies basically suck, but listen and watch the god damn video. The band, Free is playing great. It's a one in a million performance.
I remember in the 70´s wanting to look like Paul Rodgers, play Guitar like kossoff, drum like Simon and be a cool Bass player like Andy Fraser.Wow what agroup the greatest Rock single in the History of Rock.
BTW - no offense intended to anyone with epilepsy. I know its no picnic and probably should have choose my words better. I just get a laugh how the :Nightly News" would catch a kid here or there all spaced out & painted up and this is what everyone these days thinks we were all about back then. Listen to the lyrics - whats the song about ?? Same ol' song - gettin' a little. By and large, thats what it was all about. We don't need no stinkin' hippies ! BTW, I showered daily LOL !!
Hippies my a** !! Ya know the videos you see of the kids with flowers painted on their faces dancing around like an epileptic on crack ??
WE laughed at 'em too !! Rock stars got laid alot. We wanted to get laid alt - so, we dressed to look like rock stars. We were by and large - hypocrites !
No dude I knew went around preaching "peace & love" except when the babe you were with wanted to talk about it. Guys hangin' with guys ? Never talked about it - didn't give a rats a**. "Hippies" - where ?LOL
i fancy him! awesome performance, surely one of the finest bands ever... i agree oompaul2 hip hop is shite, if only we had bands as good live as free were!!
this song has stood the test of time nearly 40 years. and now on itunes and cd etc still selling after 40 years beat that . hip hop rap nonsense crap...
They smell worse these days because they are knock offs. Many bands in the late 60's & early 70's were NOT trying to be hippies they were just doing what was going on at the time. The only asshole hippies, not good ones, were in San Francisco. That's why George Harrison came back from San Fran saying, "boys, there's no reason to go to San Fran, their all dead beats". All the good bands moved on. It was ALL about the music.
even the hells angels had long hair back then, football hooligans too, i think maybe people were more laid back but there was still plenty of violence.
Very true didz. 'twas but a thought. I know that in my fairly wide circle in the late 60's & through the 70's none of us was turned on by violence but your point's valid all the same.
I was alluding to the aggression as opposed to violence. I've seen middle-aged/older respectable types (male & female) veins bursting out of their necks, making hand gestures while driving for example. And the general underlying prickliness in every day life. One for the sociologists perhaps.
I'd go along with that, i think maybe people are more stressed, more aggressive and generally less sociable nowadays. People have less time for others. It's dog eat dog and even if you win the rat race you're still a low down dirty rat!
Pot back then was very mellow - its like 20x as potent now and doesn't lead to the same relaxed state so I'm told. Smokin a joint back then tended to take the edge off male aggressive tendencies - the"free love" ? But don't get caught messin with someones ol' lady !!. Fights always killed the "vibe" and the ladies didn't like fighting - the 60's line "I'm a lover not a fighter". If you wanted to be "in" with the chicks you had to condemn violence LOL !! Thats just the way it was...rock on !!
Nah, it was the weed more than anything. The long hair was just because chicks dug it. Had hair down to my a** and never understood why chicks liked it (?). Here in the US of A at least we still fought at the drop of a hat when drinking. Much of that "free love" was a bunch of SH*T and just a way to get laid - hate to say it but its true. Males back then, on the whole, were still very sexist and could be very violent compared to todays kids (except inner cityy/ghetto). "Booze & ladies...'69 !!"
Gotta remember one thing that says it all - these guys were like 20 years old when they played Isle of Wight - sounding like veterans. Awesome.
Is is really so bad nowadays that groups can't create nor perform with this kind of ability? Somebody please invent a time machine so we can go back and see great music performed by great bands like this.
I'm a singer?/songwriter, aged 59, and I hang with a lot of young people who are damned good musicians, mostly punk, punk/rock, blues and metal.
There's still an incredible amount of talent out there but the suits are promoting inane stuff they can pack and wrap so that little kids and girls at the young end of their teenage years will buy it.
It's like there was a revolution going on in the '60s & '70s and if you get into the indie scene some of the freedom's coming back.
I love Free !! But you gotta look at these guys'eyes, they're all doped or drunk..Rodgers definitely, pure Rock 'n' Roll in a sense. Kirke reminds me of Animal, the drummer from the Muppets.
Patent Apply for a brain. Again you tell your age by your comments. You have been brainwashed into anybody looking a bit different meant they were doped or drunk. BULLSHIT. Not everything is the way your stupid teacher and parents tell you. Jesus was drunk. Drinking has been going on forever and people like you are not going to stop it and I hope to god you don't try. LISTEN TO THE FUCKING MUSIC, for a change. It was a GREAT performance whether they drank or not, it ROCKS.
This may seem off the subject, but when you said no gimmicks, I thought of seeing Grand Funk Railroad live in 1972 or 73 in Waterloo, Iowa. No Gimmicks at all. Three guys, pouring out their hearts with guitars, drums and perhaps and organ. There were other bands I could mention that I saw, but they were as no gimmack as you could get.
Wish I could find my the crowd. I was in about the 6th row from stage. Think we all look a bit different then we did in 1970! What a concert that was. way different days. I spent almost 4 months in Europe spending under 1k. including plane. I will never forget, and my ears never recovered :-)
Hee hee "heads" were always at bus stops I seem to remember, usually in greatcoat and plimsolls, and always always with bout 6 or 7 albums under their arms, proudly displaying who they into!! ( Roger Dean covers were the biz!) Ahh great days to be sure or was that dazzzzzzze.......
raw, unadulterated heavy rock, wow! 38 years ago, paul rodgers must be deaf as a stone by now, going by the lyrics and the production on the new queen single, its confirmed.alright now though is still the bollocks.
They're not just dumb - they're dangerous. "Paul has a beard,Angus has curly hair,Phil looks like Simon, Bon is clean-shaven..." Jesus H Christ, have you wankers ever considered listening to the music?
Its wierd coz both angus and paul arent stiff players and facial expressions are similar and paul rodgers and bon scott look very similar, before i even knew who AC/DC were properly i thought all right now was by AC/DC lol up until i was introduced to LET THERE BE ROCK ALBUM lol
I remember hearing this song the first time in a head shop. I was blown away. I had never heard of Free but remembered the voice when Bad Company came on the scene.
Does anyone know the line-up of bands for this gig like who headlined it? Free must of been one of the first to go on because I own The Who's performance at this festival and they didn't go on until 2:00am.
Only difference is that Paul Rodgers has a beard & Bon never had a beard & Angus' hair is more curly than Paul Kossoff's. You should take a good look a Simon then look at AC/DC's drummer from '74-83 & '94-today; Phil Rudd 'cos I've always said he looks a lot like Simon Kirke.
No Free never played at Woodstock 1969. The Music Press over the pond were blind to real talent. Therefore rock fans in the US were totally ignorant of FREE's existance. the bass in the instrumental is amazing. i love that solo. its not very rocky but the guitaring still (both bass and electric) is still fucking awesome!
How cool was Andy Fraser? What a dude. There's not a day goes past that I don't hum a Free tune, play a Free record or think about how amazing they were. I'd give up all the gigs and festivals I went to just to have seen them once.

How cool was Andy Fraser? What a dude. There's not a day goes past that I don't hum a Free tune, play a Free record or think about how amazing they were. I'd give up all the gigs and festivals I went to just to have seen them once.

Andy Fraser, at the tender age of 15 had already been playing with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers.
