I love the fact that, wherever you follow Lloyd Ryan on Youtube, there is always some controversy ... BRILLIANT ! Lloyd is an amazing player and an amazing educator. As a character, he is larger than life and, if he has a lot of stories to tell about being in the biz for so long IT'S BECAUSE HE'S LIVED AND WORKED THOSE EXPERIENCES. A talented educator, clinician, musician and soloist ... someone that is a great ambassador for our instrument.
WOW! And I thought my drum solo clips on here were pretty good :-) These guys just shred like crazy! Excellent! Wish I could find some players like that to play along side with out here (Las Vegas). Keep these clips coming they are very inspirational! 5 stars all the way.
Agreed David. Mr Rushton is WORLD-CLASS! I saw him with Imelda May at Buxton Opera House and was stunned with the quality, dynamics, power and virtuosity of his playing. He's just played with Jeff Beck at The 02 and none other than Jimmy Page congratulated him on his drumming after the gig. Say no more. Lovely bloke n'all!
the best 2 drummers in england, a real drummer knows that ,top class rolls triplets and rolls are hard to get perfect ,this drum solo is 1st class , when was the last time you seen a drum solo like this on tv ,,i tell you it was buddy rich ,so anyone you says this is not great, knows nothing about druming...
Your view is welcome however sometimes the circumstance needs to be put into context.
The 'Masterclass' took place before this and the 'guy standing up' is none other than Steve Rushden. He had merely been an audience member for the whole event and was invited for an inpromtu 'Jam'. It was completely 'off the cuff' using Phil Soloman's floor tom and snare.
I think they did a good job in 'entertaining' the audience and they certainly appreciated it.
If you caught Jools Holland Tuesday 23rd and Friday 26th September you would have seen Steve playing in Imelda May's band. Another appearance probably unnoticed by most!
@Jez2008UK Wow, you're a real dick. I don't even have to hear you play to know that, with your attitude, Steve Rushton would outplay you with one hand tied behind his back.
I knew LR would never play with JB without looking it up.
Listen dude, if this is stuff you think is great and cutting edge and it rocks your boat, I'm really pleased for you.
I'm just saying that it does nothing for me because it isn't even creating, it's trying to replicate something that has already been done by others (the real creators) before. So, for me, it's self-indulgence.
SR may well be a fantastically interesting drummer, but from what I've seen, nothing original.
@Jez2008UK I don't want to get into any kind of bitching contest with anybody....but if you think these guys sound no more than like they're warming up, and you are so totally unimpressed with the playing, how about doing us all a favor and post a video of you playing the drums?!!? Would be really interesting to compare your left hand technique with the 2 guys here!
@Jez2008UK Of course you can have an opinion! The problem is that you came off like you were running these guys down! You said: "in fact to me, it sounds like 2 players warming up." Also, "No 'wow' factor, just regular, plain, swing, marching drum, rudiment stuff. And as to the guy standing up, his left hand technique is awful." So when you make comments like that, sometimes you get called on them! I can play a little bit, these guys can sure play! You knocked them - can you better them?
Doesn't mean that I don't admire their discipline, their practicing etc.... what I prefer is creativity, oh, not hand 'good' my left hand is (sorry, but that's soooooo sad).
Here's a drummer I totally and utterly admire - check it out and then let me know what you think... YouTube = JdD3Bqr8e78 (oh, and then come back telling me how unbelievably creative and original LR and SR were being)
@Jez2008UK Yup - love Terri Lynne Carrington - have a couple of her cd's - I think she's great. However, I didn't see her doing anything super impressive here - nice playing for sure, tasty...but no "wow!" And you can't compare what she is doing, bar soloing during a song, to what these 2 guys are doing - trading 4's without accompaniment! Whatever - your opinion vs my opinion! Who cares anyway! At least you are checking out Carrington, so you appreciate good music! Enough said for now!
That's where you and I differ - that trio is creating music, not ONE single fill of Teri's is repetitive - I put my house on it that LR cannot do what Teri does there. He is NOT a creative, he is a technician. And sorry, but that's how you're coming across (wanting to check out my left hand technique).
Having said all of that, there is no such thing as 'best' drummer - they all have different styles, and it's down to personal taste.
@Jez2008UK Dude - what is your issue? I NEVER said I wanted to check out your left hand technique! YOU said that SR had "awful" left hand technique! So I said, show everybody yours, if you are gonna bash somebody else!!! 2 guys just riffing in front of a crowd in an impromptu jam session you are gonna get some repeats! Loyd may or may not be all that creative - from what I have seen on youtube, he certainly knows how to play...he isn't Joe Morello or Buddy Rich, but nobody else is either!
Lloyd came to my school not to long ago.

Anyone who attempts to master an instrument for a lifetime should have a certain high standard of proficiency.
But here, I fail to see the 'masterclass' - in fact to me, it sounds like 2 players warming up.
There isn't any originality - this has been done before and better, so I don't see the point why someone would want to 'do this for *our* pleasure'.
No 'wow' factor, just regular, plain, swing, marching drum, rudiment stuff.
And as to the guy standing up, his left hand technique is awful.

I thank you for putting the circumstances into context.
'None other than' Steve Rushden - looked him up on Google, and YouTube, who is he ??

Actually (my spelling error) It's Steve Rushton. Apologies to Steve and all!

And other's could outplay me with one finger......
Still entitles me to my opinion.
I've met Lloyd - even had the misfortune of having a lesson with him many years ago. Very full of himself.

the guys plays with jeff beck...and you play with who?

@ojpdrummer
Lloyd Ryan plays with Jeff Beck ?? Really ??
Besides, that's a stupid argument - there are 10year olds out there who could wipe the floor with this stuff and they don't play with JB...........

I am sorry, I put an (s) after guy, i meant Steve Rushton plays with Jeff beck. How do i know? I saw them play together on saturday.
