@tomastomas11 I would say 2 MAX a 10G isn't that big... A 20G (longer rather then taller is better but again I'd say approx 2 Adult MAX and many homes/hide outs provided, if you plan on having babies 20G+ (again longer/wider is better then taller)

you should never put different breeds of hamsters together.

Campbells Russian hamsters can live in same sex pairs (make sure your cage is big enough)

Robos can live in same sex pairs (again large cage)

and syrian or "teddy bear" hamsters MUST live alone.

you can of course have different breeds at the same time but they must not be housed together or play together.

A Syrian would be great for any beginning hamster owner. Thats the large sized hamster.

Dwarfs are more quick and harder to handle ESP a roborovski hamster, they are about 2 inches in size and aren't even really handable.

what u'll nid to do is, when u take him out of his cage, make sure that when ur hammy tries to run away,the place is safe, no holes or any other furniture where it can hide.. so u can easily catch it, and remember! handle him w/ care.. pet him outside his cage 2-3 times a day..

I wouldn't suggest a Dwarf Hamster for first time owners or for kids anyway because they tend to nip and need to be trained constantly so they don't become wild. Most kids either don't have the patience or the knowledge to keep this up.

dwarf hamsters cant properly climb through the tubes especially vertical ones and they have enough space for 3 mothers and their babies until the babies are a few weeks old

Wrong, dwarfs can climb up anything they can grip and verticle tubes are no trouble at all for all of mine. Also wrong about three nursing mothers, 1 nursing mother would be fine until the babies are weaned but three is unhealthy and will likely result in the death or sickness of several babies.

Three nursing mothers in a 10 gallon aquarium is going to be overcrowded and when the hamsters feel overcrowded they can kill their own young in order to give the remaining babies more resources. Just to name one of many many reasons.

Also I raise dwarfs and have never had a single hamster that could not go up a verticle tube, so either your hamsters are obese or have some other malformation likely due to breeding that has causes an inability to climb tubes (curving spine etc..) I have 3 week old babies who can climb verticle tubes. Or you are using extremely old tubes that do not have internal grips as all modern tubes do. In any case a normal dwarf should have no trouble climbing a verticle tube.
