They just look into your bag, they don't stick their hands in and go through your things. Depends on the size of your bag also, if it's bigger than A4 paper then generally they will want to check. You make it sound like such a big thing when 99% of the time they aren't really paying attention to what's in your bag.

@JZeleny92 Its not a big deal to my friends and family here, who are used to it. I am not used to it. But I do think Americans are spoiled with their personal rights. In Walmart, there are checkers at the exits who sometimes ask to see your receipt if you're walking out with a huge tv. I've seen these checkers get attacked for asking.

I was born and bred in Australia, and the bag check thing is just second nature now. When I leave a store, even without purchasing something, I always open my bag for inspection (even without them asking!) and most of the time they just glance in, they don't 'search' unless they have reason to.

@Sallymayj Well, see I'm a silly spoiled American and while its an outrage to me, all my friends here are more sensible than me and they feel like you do. And I agree, it is a great experience and I'll never forget my time here :)

@clarky223 Most of the ladies just glance in, but I've had some mean ones who move stuff around in my bag to search. Maybe its just the area I'm at?

@ILoveDawsonsCreek Hmm They arent allowed to touch anything. Im just a casual worker that fills in on the door on breaks. But everyone gets told that we cant touch someones bag whether that is a shopping bag or handbag. Maybe just where you are.

I would keep a small purse and would take out my wallet b4 I let them check. I personally dont like it but I understand why they would feel uncomfortable. I read that Australia has the biggest crime rate on a crime website. In the history of Australia it was used basically as an island for criminals by the UK. Kinda like a huge jail. Anyway thats what I read in the history books.
