@wolfdragga Originally they were blades with a hooked curve at the end while being flat an non-retractable

@CyberdarkHellKaiser yes and they were not even supposed to be part of his body, but later on they started drawing as spikes, then some artists drew them as blades, the animates series in the 90's had them as spikes etc. it's one of those things you just have to not worry about because you're never going to get a proper answer
