every time i see a p40 tommahawk i always think of how much better and faster and badder it could have been with a rrmerlin.anyone of you afficinados outther think this would have turned this great plane to a superior fighter.picture this plane highly refined with rrmerlin pressurised cockpit and bubble canopy.ya think?
The engine sounds of these birds are much better than any music...
I am a music lover and an aircraft lover, but I really have to say...every topic needs its own space...a combo isnt bad if no music overloads enginesounds on airshows and vids, and if engine sounds doesnt disturb open air concerts...
Best aerial demo I have ever seen was a Tigercat flown in from Fla. to Wappingers Falls, NY a number of years back. The pilot did a balls to the wall show. Really amazing demo. No holds barred.
@nrborod I saw a demo once with the F8F Bear Cat and he OWNED the sky. This was back in the '70s. As you said, he wasn't holding back AT ALL. He wasn't trying to preserve his old war bird....he gave it all she had to give. It was spectacular. I'd say he easily rivaled the jet fighters of the day.
@JetMechMA - Uhm, easily rivaled the jet fighters of the day? What day would that be? The 1950s when jet fighters like the F-86 Sabre Jet first came out or the 1970s when F-4 Phantoms were king? I'm curious. Either way, the Bearcat, like any other prop aircraft of the time, would have been owned by a jet. That's just pretty basic knowledge.
@Nfarce: Either way, the Bearcat, like any other prop aircraft of the time, would have been owned by a jet. That's just pretty basic knowledge.
JM: I wouldn't bet my life on that. Ever see the movie "Final Countdown" where F-14s dogfight WW2 Japanese Zeroes? I believe that whoever choreographed the flight scenes did an authentic job of simulating a dogfight between an F-14 and a Zero. The Zero pilot adapts rapidly and uses his strengths against the F-14's weaknesses.
@JetMechMA - One of my favorite aviation related movies of all time. I especially loved the Tomcats pawing at the Zeroes like a cat with a mouse toy right before they blew them out of the sky. You did see the same movie I saw (many times), right?
@Nfarce Yeah, that's right, same same. I especially like the part where the Zero driver adapted and got slow where Tomcat is clumsy....and the actual F-14 stalled for real and dropped like a rock towards the ocean. In a real war, the Zero would have double backed on him and ran some stitches down his underbelly. ;)
The F7Fs, like the F8Fs, just missed WWII. Some were in squardon service but missed the actual fighting. By the time of Korea, the frontline fighters were F9F Panther jets (though they did ground attack, too) and the attack planes were Skyraiders. I too believe that there were a few Marine squadrons with them but I can't name them. Beautiful shot that the end showing the small head-on aspect. Great plane; along with the F8F would have been a killer in WWII.
@Fireheart528 it makes you wonder. can you fit an old fighter piston engine in the back of a van find or order to build an appropriate differential and gearbox and try to move it? nah!
@routhoula dude, somebody did that with a '55 Chevy--he put a Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 in it! the videos on here somewhere, check the related videos for it.
THANK YOU!!!! For not playing any damn music. If I hear Sound System one more time, I will literally reach into the computer and rip the balls off of the guy who plays their crap on thier video!
I thought the Tigercat ran counter rotating engines like the lightening and Black Widow. These both turn counter clock wise. Couldn't find a clockwise engine and prop for the right side or am I mistaken?
I like how the owner actually flew it. At least I think he was the owner, some older guy. And then after he flew it, his wife came out onto the tarmac as he climbed down the 20ft tall ladder to the ground.
You missed the most cool take off and specially the landing shots... it's an amazing plane...

if Anna Nicole Smith had wings that is what she would look like

Incredible. The F7 straight on shot - how skinny! I'd hate to have to fly one with an engine out.

I love the sound of radials. Reminds me of visiting the Palm Springs Air Museum, I grew up to the sound of those unmistakeable radials!
