steve reich came up with the idea of having two identical pieces that slowly went out of sync with other like this, which he accomplished by slowing down one of two reels of tape. at least i think he came up with it, either way, he did it.

Well I guess phase based music has been around for quite a while, but Reich definitely made extensive use of it - especially with the addition of technology.
