Just a quick thing sir, for "oh yeah, huh...", "oo nga ano..." I think is more appropriate. "oo nga pala" is usually used when saying, "oh and by the way...".
ex: "Huwag mong kalimutan, lalabas tayo mamaya."
"Sige, hindi ko kakalimutan. Paalam. Oo nga pala, gustong sumama ni Maria sa atin."
wow thanks for explaing nga and pala...I have a little difficulty explaining it to my foreign friend. I just thought we filipinos like to prolong our sentences (which is clearly not the case.)
Wow! I like this! he's very informative and I've learned something about the translation. Im a pinoy working here in America. Thanks Bud Brown! Mabuhay ka!
@MagicMaximo sir its not hindi malamig pala, its "hindi pala malamig" its confusing especially if its not your first language but i understand...anyweiz you rock! keep up the vids, hope to see you in national television here in the Philippines , one day i know you'll have your own show, "tagalog language for americans". you'll be a great host!you rock!!!
when using "pala", you put it before the adjective if its negative.. like your example, it should be, "hindi pala malamig"..but if its positive, it goes after the adjective.
marami bang banyaga na gustong matuto managalog? i think tagalog/filipino is the easiest language to learn. marami bang nagpapaturo sa iyo? if there's anyone out there who needs tutoring in tagalog, msg me. Pinoy Pride!
I think this is useful to my brother in law. They live in UTAH and he tries to learn Tagalog. Thanks Magic Maximo, I'll recommend this to my best buddy (my brother in law). Para pag pumunta siya dito sa Australia o pag pumunta ako sa UTAH tagalog ang conversation namin. Salamat ulit, kaibigan...
Yeah, you are right about that. My father use that a lot, especially when he is about to take a crap. "Natatae na nga ako eh!" It even get worst when he starts doing it eh, eh, eh, ehhhhh!
Mr.Brown, thankyou so much to learn an other language is not to easy. I try to pick up words here and there but to hear how they sound makes it easy. Keep up the great work ,love your videos.
Good observations, "pala" is like "after all", and "nga" is like "indeed".
I think these are called inflections. I hope you could cover the other meanings of 'nga' and other inflections as well if you haven't done yet. I'm sure it would be fun.
or and you can say hindi nga pala malamig. You're right. it isn't cold. The nga pala is referring back to something someone else said. and by the way, "oo, nga pala," can be used into two ways. As "oh by the way," or when answering someone, Oh yes what you said was right."ah oo nga pala, tama ang sinabi mo."
I think it's better translated to as "hindi pala malamig"... this is the case when you negate an adjective with the word "hindi"... ex. hindi pala mainit (oh it isn't hot) or hindi pala maganda (oh it isn't beautiful)... it sounds rather awkward if you put "pala" at the end than putting it right after "hindi"...
congratulations man, I watched all your videos and I can say that helped me a lot, please keep it going, you are doing a very good job, I do like to learn new languages as well, I'm a brazilian who lives in japan, so I do speak portuguese, english, japonese and I'm trying to learn about tagalog, please keep the great job you doing.. I really cant wait for the next video, once again congratulations, you doing a very good job and I'm learning a lot w/ your videos.
Diyos ko, ang husay ng iyong mga leksiyon. I'm also an American married to a Visayan (almost 30 years). I did self-study (Aspillera's balarila). Your observations are really consistent with what I learned from the book, as well as from listening to conversation. Hindi ako marunong magbisaya -- except stuff I saw on signs in the Phils, like "andam sa ido" and "Kini ang beer." Kailan ang susunod na leksiyon?
That's ok if you have an accent. I am an Americano speaking Tagalog with a visaya accent (I learned Tagalog from my Visayan asawa)but at least you can speak. There is a saying, "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king!" Hey, you may have only one eye but at least you can see!
Thanks so much for your comments. I think, I've rattled on in Tagalog and no one has realy taken the time to correct me. It's better to correct me so I can learn the right way. Kinda like a real freiend will tell you if your walking around with your zipper open, di ba? Salamat. pare!
That reminds me...in my family we usually say "XYZ" (meaning "examine your zipper") However, when I tried to teach my wife that, she'd say in public, "Honey, your XYZ is open!" haha, kinda defeated the purpose! LOL

so if I wanted to ask somebody a question, I would need to add "ba" at the end or else it would be left a statement?
25julian70 2 years ago
what does "ganun" mean or little words like "ba"?
25julian70 2 years ago
ganoon means "Like that."
BA makes a question from a statement.
Example:
Mainit = It's hot.
Mainit ba? = Is it hot?

PALA is similar to "OH YEAH" or "OH YES". For example "Oh Yeah, there it is".
theunholysoul 3 years ago
Many of us use "eh" though it doesn't have any significant meaning.
"oo nga eh!"
"Malamig nga sa labas eh!"
"Wala pa ngang tumawag eh!"
lol I speak Tagalog fluently since I was a child and I never found an explanation to the word "eh" Lol.
mustang4010 3 years ago
I tell people it's just for emphasis, that's just the way it seems. :=)
MagicMaximo 3 years ago
The 'eh' is also like saying 'huh'. For example, "it's cold outside huh" (but pronounced more like 'haw' than in question form)
If i'm correct, its also like when canadians say 'eh'. "It's cold, eh" but yes, its just for emphasis.

Hi Bud!
"Pala" (in your video) means "afterall."
Pala comes after the adjective if the sentence is in the positive. ("Ooooh, malamig pala.")
Pala comes before the adjective if the sentence is in the negative. ("Hindi pala malamig.")
"Nga pala..." at the start of the sentence means "By the way..." (for people who suddenly remembered what they forgot to tell you).
viloria 4 years ago
