Escaflowne is a lot different from the typical "anime robot" shows. Give it another chance. This is not a Gundam/Macross/Evangelion-styl­e show. This is the ultimate cross of shojo and shonen, of romance and action, of happiness and sadness. This is one of the few anime from the 90's that still holds up animation-wise today as well because they used up the budget for 39 episodes on "only" 26.

Escaflowne is a classic. Watch it. You'll discover that the moment you stop thinking "robot anime".
