Not quite sue what a noob is, but that is a good tip. depending on how many leaves you have in the pool. in this particular pool, there were not that many leaves in it - so it kind of did not matter, and your trick of brush leaves into the deep end may have saved a bit of time. However in many areas of the country that have larger leafed trees, like oaks or maples, sometimes there are like 4 feet of leaves throughout the entire pool. hi dave! we have a 4 part vid on How To Close A Swimming Pool. You can find it on our poolandspamoose channel. hope this helps, and thanks for watching ! dan
Well I'm glad my pool isn't gonna be this bad but what a pain >.< I just bought a house and before they closed, they cleaned out the little water at the bottom and filled it up... I would have preferred they left it empty. Turns out there's a little electircal issue so the pump won't turn on so now I have a green pool... didn't wanna have the pool as the first thing I need to deal with but oh well. Thanks for the vid
Well, you are not alone. Many people are buying foreclosures and houses that have remained vacant for a few years and we are having a lot of green pool issues this year. But ultimately, even if you have to put some bucks into the pool to get it up-to-par, you probably got a good deal on the house - and after all - a pool is really a lot of fun (except when it is green) ! Thanks for watching. Dan
Absolutely ! I have cleaned pools since the late 1970's and I would be kidding you if I said I never fell in. My worst slip-up was into the deep end of a pool that was totally black - and actually had little frogs and tadpoles swimming in it. Not only was that gross, but of course I had my pool service metal clip-board in my hand when I slipped in, and all the receipts and checks and paperwork from the whole day got totally soaked ! So the general rule of thumb is 'do not fall in pool' !!!
i opened up my inground pool today after sitting for 2 years. the combination of living in ontario canada, and being surrounded by trees made the thing look and smell like a sewage treatment plant. I added the more than usual amount of shock, and its now a milky aqua color. it'll be clear in maybe a week. thanks for the video!
The milky color is a good step in the right direction. Normally a pool will go from black or dark green to a milky blue for the first day or so after treating the water. Make sure you do a lot of backwashing and keep the chlorine level very high until it clears enough to vac it out. Glad the vid was helpful to you and thanks for watching. Dan
I have a hayward nav. that I leave in the pool. Around this time of the year the birds start coming like crazy landing on the hose line for their bath time. Should i just start removing the nav. after use every day?
According to most automatic vac manufacturers, you should remove them from the pool after use. Do most people do that? No. Most people leave them in - except when kids are playing in the pool. Concerning the birds sitting on the floating hose or wire - yes - that is a common problem. I have no real answer to that, except maybe to get a mean cat? I would be interested to hear from other youtuber's, if they have any tricks that work well to get rid of the birds. Thanks for watching. Dan
I will do my best to stop being fidgety, but , I am kind of fidgedy IRW. But I guess we all have our 'cross to bear'...... hope your pool clears up for future bears ! thanks for watching :o) dan
Well, chlorine in and of itself is not really bad. It is actually put into the public water supply in many places in the USA. It is bad if you use it wrong. Anyway, there are certainly many other alternative treatment methods to keep a pool clean including bromine, salt, ozone, baqua products, etc., etc. If you go to our web site, under the Alternative Santizer sections, you can see the many other ways you can sanitize pool or spa water. Thanks for watching. Dan
As water evaporates, the remaining water increases in hardness, since the minerals don't evaporate. Adding tap water to that still gives you an increase in minerals dissolved. Over three years a large amount of water has evaporated, but the minerals from it are still in the pool, in addition to what would be present in a pool recently filled from empty with fresh tap water.
I too was told to drain our pool (in Phoenix) every three years BECAUSE of the evaporation. The water just keeps getting harder due to "distillation" (and subsequent replacement with hard water) and it becomes much more difficult to control pH and alkalinity as a result.
Well, I never heard of that. It is the same water - and it is either hard, or not. Whether you slowly replace the water through evaporation and adding a few inches per week vs. draining the whole pool out, you are ultimately using the same water with the same hardness level. You are correct about the fact that as the calcium level of the water increases, the PH and alkalinity are harder to control and the chlorine becomes less effective as hardness levels increase. Hope this helps :o) Dan
POOL OWNERS ! This video was a great help, thankyou, for those of you who struggle, you can make life so much easier with a product called the Vacvice. Trust me, it's so easy and cheap to buy. Don't take my word for it, see the video, search on here for Vacvice you will LOVE IT.
normally, you should not have to drain and refill a pool at all - unless you are painting it, or changing a vinyl liner, or something like that. you normally keep the same water in it. thanks for watching - dan
@poolandspamoose We live in Arizona & the common wisdom here is to change the water every 3 years or so. Think it has something to do with the heat & the minerals in the water..thought you'd like to know.
This vid was shot in NV. Although this is not my own pool, I do have a pool at my house in Vegas. I have never heard of anyone saying to drain your pool out every 3 yrs. I do not think there is a need for that - especially in desert areas like AZ or NV. There is so much water evaporation that occurs due to the dry heat and low humidity, that most SW pool owners have to add a few inches of water to their pools each week just due to that. So that really negates the need to drain the pool. Dan
@poolandspamoose Thanks for the response. I'll pass your info on to my husband and his friends. Not a surprise that water also doesn't come for cheap here in the desert, although I'm guessing it's more expensive say, in Las Vegas, since the Phoenix area is fed in part by natural aquifers.
You guys need to do a video on how to stop your dog from drinking the pool water, Ive got a beagle who just loves the chlorinated water, im forever yelling "STOP IT!" at him LOL
funny.....but, in all reality, dogs can drink pool water. the chlorine levels are relatively low, and will not hurt animals. thanks for watching - dan
@poolandspamoose i need a couple of inches more, there is this product " helpo growth formula" i grew taller most from w..helpogrowth.commmm check it out
@poolandspamoose cant believe 171,000 views. just dump in case of chlorine, clean filter and run pump 8 hours a day. clean filter second time after a few days and your done.
that would be nice if it was that easy :o) actually on some pools, that is all you have to do, but when a pool really turns into a swamp, it often needs more tending-to. thanks for watching ! dan
Well, cleaning a green pool is kind of a boring topic, so we tried to make it as entertaining as possible - without getting too technical. green pools suck. BTW - i went to your you tube site and saw your best friends video, and the dog in that vid looks exactly like the dog helping to clean the pool in this video. his name is sammy. maybe they are related ?? anyway, thanks for watching and commenting. dan
well, i am actually a metallica-type of guy, but that type of music does not really go with pool cleaning. so, i guess, for some reason, they decided that maybe cleaning a pool is like going to a rave ? lol.....thanks for watching - dan
i've shocked the pool about 4 times...last time i added 9gallons of liquid chlorine and its still green. i have a 17k gallon pool it has a vinyl liner we use well water and i have a cartridge filter what should i do to change to clear water ive spent so much money in chemicals already
i think your weak link is the cartridge filter. they take the longest to clear a pool. you have to clean them out frequently. also, well water sometimes causes additional problems with high minerals and/or metals in the water. i would take a water sample to a good pool store so they can do a complete test on the water. i might also suggest replacing the cartridge filter element, if yours is old or too deteriorated. hope these tips are of some help and thanks for watching :o) dan
@graftennis4 either his right its bad algae if the filter cartridge is good buy this thing at leslies or at superior (california) called SWIMTRINE this is so good stuff i clean pools and it beats brushing nd just spread the whole bottle all over the perimeter of the pool and nd let swimtrine do the rest ask the guys tht sell tht for assistance if you have any question but after you applied that you need to clean the filter Hope this helps
i live in canada, and unfortunately, my inground pool won't be opened this summer. obviously in a canadian climate, pools are always green in the spring. im thinking by next summer the water will be black..
because people with inground pools with vinyl liners do not have that option. even draining out an above ground pool with a liner carries some risks. also, there is always a possibility that a gunite, plaster or fiberglass pool could pop out of the ground when the water is removed. so generally, it is not recommended to drain out a pool unless absolutely necessary. thatnks for wtching ! dan
Great video along with Part 2. Open my pool up 4 days ago and it looked like a giant black cup of coffee. After watching these videos and following them pool was crystal clear in 4 days.
many of the pools that we used to service in NY had that much stuff in them if the pool cover ever fell in over the winter. it IS a lot of debris :o) thanks for watching - dan
PH refers to both ALK and ACID so its pretty impossible for the PH and ALK to be low as alkali is HIGH ph and acid is LOW ph, so what exactly do you mean when you say "I'm sure your ph, alkalinity and chlorine are low"
to raise ph you use sodium carbonate. to raise alkalinity, you uses sodium bi-carbonate (baking soda). ph - Is the level of how acidic the pool water is. You must maintain a good pH level or your chlorine will not work effectively. The level should be between 7.2 and 7.6. ALKALINITY is like a ph stabilizer. It helps to keep the ph within the proper levels so that the chlorine can work effectively. It reduces ph bounce. The level should be between 100 - 150. hope this helps :o) dan
I tested everything for the 1st time in a week. PH/alk is off the scale Blue on the stick it supose to be green on the stick so its over 8.4 so i added PH down for 40k gallons of water.Chlorine was on the low side light purple so i added 4 bags of shock for 40k gallons of pool. I vacuum the pool for 15 min then backwash it for 2 min .Hope this works got a pool party sunday.
i am sure your ph, alkalinity and chlorine are low. rain tends to be acid, which pulls down the ph, making the chlorine ineffective. then, combined with hot weather and a solar cover, you have perfect breeding ground for algae. so i would test water and raise ph and alk, backwash filter and shock pool. it will clear up in a few days. hope this helps :o) dan
Dan, thanks for the great information & instructions you are showing us. I have the same problem as the Lauren. I have fallowed your steps and got the pool to clear up very nicely with in a week. My problem is my pool keeps on turning back to green after I put it back to filter. I clear up the pool and vacuum the pool a 3 times, back wash and rinse a few times and still every time I put it back to filter, it turns back to green. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
well, it could be a chemical issue or it could be a problem with your filter. hard to diagnose without being in front of it. i would take a water sample to the local pool store to rule out chemical problems. if your chemicals are OK, then you have to look towards your filter to be the culprit. if you go to our web site under the info / tips tab, there is loads of more detailed instructions that will help you concerning pool filter problems. thanks for watching - dan
kind of complicated to explain here. you need a copper based algaecide and may need stabilizer or conditioner in your water. i would take a water sample to a pool store and have them do a complete water test on it. then adjust your chemicals accordingly. if you go to our web site under the info / tips tab, there is loads of more detailed instructions that will help you. thanks for watching - dan
generally, salt water pools are handled quite differently, chemical-wise. most of the info in this vid does not pertain to salt systems. go to our site for further info. thanks for watching :o) dan
thats kind of misleading.. it WOULD be better to use the robotic pool cleaner ( its not an automatic that used the suction/presure side" because you wouldnt have to constantly clean your filter and do the backwashing because that dolphin diagnostic ( looks like a dolphin) has its own power supply and independent filtration which means less strain on the equipment pad.yea big deal you gotta take it out and clean it..as far as the tablets those will raise your cyanuric acid so using alot wont help
you should not put a robotic cleaner in a pool if you cannot see the bottom of the pool and you know it has a ton of leaves in it. tri-chlor tabs do have cyanuric acid in them, but at minimal levels. most pools are very low in cyanuric acid and need to have stabilizer added each year anyway. i would not wory about tri-chlor tabs effecting that. thanks for your comments and thanks for watching ! dan
just so people dont listen to this and be misguided... it does not matter if your chlorine level is between 3-5 because its the phosphates that cause algae.. you would need a phosphate preventer...how many time have you maintained your chlorine level and then it rains or something happens and it turns green anyways?? eliminate phosphates and maintain your FAC between 3-5
why bother with all of those chemicals? you have a waste setting on the DE filter like all sand filters and a 3 way valve can be added to a cartridge filter, Drop P.h to 7.2 with acid, Add 6 gallons of liquid chlorine and then the following day add what is known as flocculant or Polyaluminium chloride which drops the dead algae and vaccuum the dropped algae to waste. dark green to crystal clear in 24 hours
you are saying kind of the same thing we say. we just showed all the chemicals you could possibly need. a lot has to do with the kind of filter you have and how often you backwash too. but your advice is good. thanks for the input! dan
Just bought a house that has a 1977 Anthony Pool with an Anthony Apollo Vertical DE Filter. Only prob is previous owner had no idea how to run the thing and had no instructions manual at all. I looked online for a manual but cant find one. Need to know how to prime pump too. Any help would be great! Keep up the good work!
i have been looking for vid that tells how to clean my pool for several hours now. thanks for not wasting my time anymore. i will check out you site and by something now.

i live in canada, and unfortunately, my inground pool won't be opened this summer. obviously in a canadian climate, pools are always green in the spring. im thinking by next summer the water will be black..

why watse time just pump out and acid wash
bob701z 1 year ago
because people with inground pools with vinyl liners do not have that option. even draining out an above ground pool with a liner carries some risks. also, there is always a possibility that a gunite, plaster or fiberglass pool could pop out of the ground when the water is removed. so generally, it is not recommended to drain out a pool unless absolutely necessary. thatnks for wtching ! dan

once you have backwashed you should rinse before going into filter mode
sbatlk 1 year ago
if you have a 'rinse' function on your multiport valve, you are correct (some do not have 'rinse'). thanks for watching :o) dan

PH refers to both ALK and ACID so its pretty impossible for the PH and ALK to be low as alkali is HIGH ph and acid is LOW ph, so what exactly do you mean when you say "I'm sure your ph, alkalinity and chlorine are low"
widdley24 2 years ago
to raise ph you use sodium carbonate. to raise alkalinity, you uses sodium bi-carbonate (baking soda). ph - Is the level of how acidic the pool water is.

I vacuum the pool for 15 min then backwash it for 2 min .Hope this works got a pool party sunday.

good luck. hope it works out for you :o) dan

Mine is Green But its because it been raining for a week straight and solar cover was on.Filter runs 3hrs a day every day but its still Green.
Vistal1 2 years ago
i am sure your ph, alkalinity and chlorine are low. rain tends to be acid, which pulls down the ph, making the chlorine ineffective. then, combined with hot weather and a solar cover, you have perfect breeding ground for algae. so i would test water and raise ph and alk, backwash filter and shock pool. it will clear up in a few days. hope this helps :o) dan

Thanks.

well, it could be a chemical issue or it could be a problem with your filter. hard to diagnose without being in front of it. i would take a water sample to the local pool store to rule out chemical problems. if your chemicals are OK, then you have to look towards your filter to be the culprit. if you go to our web site under the info / tips tab, there is loads of more detailed instructions that will help you concerning pool filter problems. thanks for watching - dan

dan,
i have a pool that has green algae stains.
all over the walls and the floor. i bought this house a couple months ago.
original owners didnt take care of it.
i am outside everyday literally cleaning(brushing off steps and walls and leafing it and skimming the surface and skimmer baskets.)
i've shocked it twice and nothing has happened.
what do you recommend i do?
-lauren
laurenisbosss 2 years ago
kind of complicated to explain here. you need a copper based algaecide and may need stabilizer or conditioner in your water. i would take a water sample to a pool store and have them do a complete water test on it. then adjust your chemicals accordingly. if you go to our web site under the info / tips tab, there is loads of more detailed instructions that will help you. thanks for watching - dan

generally, salt water pools are handled quite differently, chemical-wise. most of the info in this vid does not pertain to salt systems. go to our site for further info. thanks for watching :o) dan

thats kind of misleading.. it WOULD be better to use the robotic pool cleaner ( its not an automatic that used the suction/presure side" because you wouldnt have to constantly clean your filter and do the backwashing because that dolphin diagnostic ( looks like a dolphin) has its own power supply and independent filtration which means less strain on the equipment pad.yea big deal you gotta take it out and clean it..as far as the tablets those will raise your cyanuric acid so using alot wont help
TURKIYE5150 2 years ago
you should not put a robotic cleaner in a pool if you cannot see the bottom of the pool and you know it has a ton of leaves in it. tri-chlor tabs do have cyanuric acid in them, but at minimal levels. most pools are very low in cyanuric acid and need to have stabilizer added each year anyway. i would not wory about tri-chlor tabs effecting that. thanks for your comments and thanks for watching ! dan

just so people dont listen to this and be misguided... it does not matter if your chlorine level is between 3-5 because its the phosphates that cause algae.. you would need a phosphate preventer...how many time have you maintained your chlorine level and then it rains or something happens and it turns green anyways?? eliminate phosphates and maintain your FAC between 3-5
TURKIYE5150 2 years ago
no a problem Dan, your videos are very interesting to watch, thankyou for taking the time to put them up here.

why bother with all of those chemicals? you have a waste setting on the DE filter like all sand filters and a 3 way valve can be added to a cartridge filter, Drop P.h to 7.2 with acid, Add 6 gallons of liquid chlorine and then the following day add what is known as flocculant or Polyaluminium chloride which drops the dead algae and vaccuum the dropped algae to waste. dark green to crystal clear in 24 hours
perthjay85 3 years ago
you are saying kind of the same thing we say. we just showed all the chemicals you could possibly need. a lot has to do with the kind of filter you have and how often you backwash too. but your advice is good. thanks for the input!
