That's why I like Karl. He says some really interesting things and is good at making you look at stuff differently. He is ignorant about pretty much everything, so when Ricky brings up a concept to him he always takes a fresh look at it without any bias, or at least normal bias, and applies his unique wisdom to it.

@lilmarome Basking Sharks and Whales are big old things and they need a lot of food, hence while they'll wrap their mouths around a school fish as opposed to chasing down just one. If they hunted for one fish they'd expel more energy than what they'd profit from eating the one small fish. This is why what Karl said was actually kind of clever. I like how you said if you're a 'lonely' fish the shark will come after you, do sharks deceive little fish with companionship before eating them?

Basking Sharks and Whales wouldn't see one fish and go "oo that'll be easy to catch" they think "shit man look at that ton of fish over there is I just swim into it with my mouth open I'll surely get 10-20 all at once yummy". They play the odds game. A little fish would go unnoticed, this is Karl's logic and it makes sense to an extent.

In this context being a 'lonely' fish as you say certainly might increase your odds of survival when it comes to being consumed by Basking Sharks and Whales. This is the context Karl is theorizing amongst he's not thinking about other predators, he only processes what is handed to him.
