Britain was virtually bankrupt, and American policymakers "took the reins". This era was the beginning of Britain's "pet-like" subservience to the United States. I suggest you take a look at Stephen Kinzer's "All the Shah's Men" in order to develop a more detailed, and somewhat less biased, understanding of the Dynamics facing 20th century Iran.

This kind of foregin intervention in governments without war, by covert means, always ends badly. Its a stupid, shotrsighted tool used my idiot politicains to remove immediate threats but with no regard for future consequences. It leaves future generations (us) to deal with the fallout. The only reason the US has a problem with Iran is because it is a theocracy (Iranians dont even like this). Given enough time, Iran will chanage itself without outside intervention.

I don't look at myself as an optimist anyway; if we can endorse a popular democratic uprising to overthrow the unwanted government (without actually intervening) and let the Iranians replace it with one they chose and is easier for us to work with, then that is much better than engineering a coup to install an unpopular puppet government.

Also, the ancient Egyptian state, stood for more than three millenia. Both Egypt and China have Jewish population to this day. So Byzantium is not the longest lasting country and even its relative longevity cannot be due to its not letting Jews work in banking.

Ok. Just lets clear some things up. Mossadegh was not promoting liberal democracy, his government collaborated with the Communist Tudeh Party, and that is why Ajax took him out and put the Shah in direct control, and the Shah did much good for Iran during the "White Revolution." This "blame America and the West" attitude represents a very selective reading of history. I definitely don't support invading Iran, but Iran's problems are because of Islamostatism, not American interventionism.
