I have always found it strange for the size of earth's moon is compared to planet to moon ratio of the rest of the solar system planets . Anyone have a theory on that ?
AWESOME! I think Cassini-Huygens has been the most successful mission ever! I don't know why NASA won't study Uranus and Neptune. Uranus has 5 Major Moons, (total = 27). Neptune has 1 Major Moon, (total = 13) Triton, which is Geologically Active! It has cryovolcanism written all over it! The only images and information we have of those worlds are from Voyager 2. Why have Uranus & Neptune been left out for so long? Triton is an ODD moon! It has Nitrogen Geysers everywhere! LET'S GO TO THEM NASA!
@MazeleyFanClub You are partially right. The dark dust was mostly blown off of another moon, but the reason why it has the dark light look is because, one side is heated more by the sun making all of the light material (ice) on that side to sublimate over to the other side, making the dark side even darker and separating the two materials to opposite sides. This is from NASA/JPL
how come all the other planets moons have awesome names (e.g. enceladus, hyperion, titan, etc.) but ours is just "the moon". seems a little smug and lacking in the creativity department.
This video cured my ADHD, and now I am really wondering why the photo of Ti...LOOK A CROP CIRCLE!!! What was I saying? Oh yeah. Why is the photo of Titan so blurry? Is there something there we're not supposed to see NASA? Hmmm...
imo Jupiter's moons kick saturn's moons asses anyday of the week! altho saturn is a sexier planet than jupiter... Jupiter knows how to accesorize! its all about the accessories!
@Froggeh92 Hey! Saturn has Titan *and* Enceladus. Titan is large and brimming with with organics. Enceladus may be small, but it's spewing samples of its salty oceans out into space. Ripe for the picking. Europa is tantalizing. But how are we ever going to get to the water underneath that ice shell. As for the accessories, are Saturn's rings not enough? Jupiter is a big muscular boring bloke. Nothing more.
Thanks SpaceRip. I always love it when I see your uploads its always so nice pictures. Even though I'm not always sure about what I am looking at its really enjoyable watching and learning like this.
In the news (here in Denmark where I'm from) the other day, they talked about a planet that looks almost like Earth. Maybe you can make a movie about that?:)
Proteus is actully the largest known irregular body in the solar system (neptunes moon). In terms of which is my favourite moon, it has to be Iapetus! Very complex in looks and features.
What's the size threshold for moons? By that I mean, at what point is it so small that it's just an orbiting asteroid? Some of these moons just seem so tiny and irregular they don't really match the image of a moon that our nicely rounded large moon has. Is it possible that a moon will eventually be deemed too small and downgraded to large asteroid ?
Atlas looks crazy. How did it get that shape? It looks like some imagined flat world with a mountain in the middle and the darker area being the surrounding ocean. Also can Mimas and Tethys shoot planet destroying lasers? just asking ;)
I know but why should the mention two of the smallest moons? There's hardly enough time for the big ones and you are upset about the fact that they didn't mention two really small ones? come on man
I love all of them aswell man, if they made a movie about Saturn's Moon I'd even go to the cinema. Space is amazing and space is our future.Keep looking up.
I think the one side of Iapetus is darker because of the much larger less dense ring that can be seen in infrared (I think Spitzer found it). The moon does not rotate and picks up the debris from this ring.
Atlas looks like a partially flattened moon... Apparently it's created by dust accumulating around the equator but the ridges seem to flow toward the equator almost as if it was due to 2 rocks colliding and then rapidly cooling or some sort of explosion in it's core that basicly melted the middle making it collapse in on itself? IMO it doesn't look like accumulated dust.
@SpaceRip You need a lot of sauce for a potato that big. Wonder how many megatonnes of potato are eaten each day on earth. Would give us a nice estimate of how big a potato needs to be to feed all of us:D
The heavenly bodies moves so gracefully like a melody orchestrated by God. Personally, if I had the choice of living on any (even stars, although i won't live for a millisecond) planet/moon/star, I would. Frankly, i've grown bored of earth, which is one of the reason i want to become an Astrophysicist to study things far beyond human comprehension. The Universe is so beautiful but yet so chaotic.......
@TheMoh668 Earth does have a 2nd moon, Cruithne. It is also known as 1986 TO, and is 5 kilometers wide (tiny by any stellar standard). It's orbit was calculated in 1997 to be very close to one year, though it changes in cycles to be slightly longer and shorter orbital periods. The Oscilation is aprox a 760 year cycle.
@Bludgeonier Cruithne is in a normal elliptic orbit around the Sun. Its period of revolution around the Sun, approximately 364 days at present, is almost equal to that of the Earth. Because of this, Cruithne and Earth appear to "follow" each other in their paths around the Sun. This is why Cruithne is sometimes called "Earth's second moon".[2] However, it does not orbit the Earth and is not a moon.
@sakuyarules True that Cruithne fits the definition of a near Earth astroid because it follows closely a solar orbit which varies between 362 and 371 days, but durring a long term observation in 1995-7 it was found to also interact with and orbit Earth during the oscilation. Meaning it does not fit in either a solar orbit or an Earth orbit, but does both. It is in limbo between beeing a true moon and being a loose rock. Only future generations will see it be in one catagory or the other.
@Bludgeonier I see. I was simply copying what was written in wikipedia. When you mentioned a second moon I was intrigued, after seeing that wiki article (I know that's not nearly enough research, but meh), just didn't want everyone to get the wrong idea is all.
@sakuyarules It is great to see people who do research! Glad that you pointed out how Cruithne dosn't fit the usual definition of a moon. More info is always a good thing, and not easy to get when there is a charicter limit. :)
