i know that its the 4th movement of shostakovich's first concerto . i have the Dvd with the performance that u hae linked to me , i'm a cellist ! i make a mistake i say that i want to know which conerto is at 1:07 , but i mean which performance , and if someone know where i can find that performance of Shosta concerto
@DomenicoMilone That's the fourth movement Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto in E-Flat Major. Videos of Rostropovich playing the whole concerto are on YouTube. Here's the first /watch?v=gcnAsv4YUn4
ABC chose the wrong person to commemorate Rostropovich. Even though Yo Yo Ma is a cellist and a celebrity, it would've been better to pick an actual friend of Slava, not a Rival. Ma looks flabbergasted and miserable. The distant praise he gives to his rival sounds cold, unnatural and poorly improvised. He clearly
doesn't want to say anything that will diminish his own celebrity or musical status by telling viewers how much [more] Rostropovich has done for the Cello and Music.
I'm familiar with Perlman's genuine praise of musicians such as Oistrakh, Heifetz and others. But it's not the same at all like this broadcast. To compare Perlman with a shallow person like Ma is irrelevant. Ma's resentment of MLR is totally obvious here and well known if you look at comments he made after 4/27/2007.
the friends of Rostro should post more of his videos playing russian music (Shosta etc...) and also Brahms sonatas... music he played at his best... there are so many recordings on youtube (mainly Bach Suites) which do not do such great justice to this great man/cellist...
Yes, transcendant moments. Slava deserved more acclaim. I remember a Great Performances when the concert master was visibly shaken for many minutes following the end of the concerto. I think Slava converted me once-and-for-all to the Western canon.
Thank you so much for posting the video. Mstislav Rostropovich is my hero and i hope that everyone in the world can understand the true beauty of his music
After he died, i was at the International Cello Festival in Manchester, England. At a tribute, which was 9 days after his death, nine of the famous cellist there played an orthodox prayer. It was beautiful...the only thing more beautiful being the two or three minutes of complete silence afterwards.
Thanks a ton for this video. I agree with Yo-Yo Ma. Once you are under Rostropovich's spell, it is hard to continue on with what ever it was you were doing. He is now up there with Casals, du Pre, and Tortelier picking a name for their quartet, of that I am sure.
Thank you so much for posting this lovely tribute on youtube.Rostropovitch has always been my absolute hero.I was amazed when I heard him at his prime in London a few times when I was a cello student in London. His playing truly gripped everybody. The audiences went crazy. He was a genuine genius with such amazing ability. He will always be remembered. He was also so kind towards others with charities.
I am appreciating your valuable comments. True, he was a musical genius with tremendous passion for music who found the soul of music. He will be remembered for ever.

i completely agree...i don't know if yo yo ma is a rival though.... rostropovich is just a much better musician. nno one rivals him ahha
aamish911 2 years ago 3
I disagree with you. Ma, like all of us, stands in awe of MLR and he says so right at the start, just like Perlman speaking of Heifetz or Menuhin.

@aamish911
Sorry, I meant that Ma considers MLR as a rival. Overwhelming # of accounts that suggest Slava was more generous/professional to other musicians.

In the same day in St.Peterburg died Kirill Lavrov, a great Russian dramatic actor. They died and were burried in the same hours.

He was Jewish if I'm correct, but thank God, for as it says in the Bible "Salvation comes from the Jews"

@99Mandalore You are incorrect, Rostropovich was a Christian
