  • would you happen to sell this train?

  • @beardeddragon896

None of my trains are for sale.

However you can still find this set at retail. Just Google "Lionel 6-31779" to start.

  • what type of track is that in the very first shot of the train in the bottom right.. its got alot more planks than the standard O gauge

  • @cannon13200

Those are old (as in "1970's era") Atlas 2-rail O Scale tracks and switches that I added third rails to, back in the late 1980's. Because at the time I had an entry-level job and they were way cheaper (like, $7 apiece) than buying Lionel switches. (they also let me place tracks a lot closer together)

The track the engine starts out on is from K-Line. The entire test track is equipped with track I used in floor layouts many years ago.

  • Nice set! I have the 2-car add on pack, and the cab car (still yet to come). Lionel did a great job with the Amfleets, they look kind of short (in height) with my other Amtrak equipment but it doesn't bother me. They look more realistic then anything MTH's made, especially with the flush-fit windows. At least in my 2-pack I didn't have any lighting problems, either.

  • wow! where did you get that?

  • @mcrrocks80

A hobby shop that carries O Gauge trains. This set was released late last year, some dealers still have them.

  • @RailRide the front part looks like a lego part

  • Quite a few hobby stores are breaking up the sets. I got an Amtrak hippo for $290. I plan to run it on my Christmas layout. The only thing I don't like are the jack rabbit starts.

  • Nice video...I see you have no cafe car in the set.

  • @Trainlover4ever2006

Yes, it appears Lionel didn't make one. The 2-car add-on cataloged for 2010 doesn't have one either.

An MTH one would look out of place in this train though--Lionel made these narrower than scale.

  • Beautiful! How much space is there really between the amfleets?

  • @AmtrakFlorida

Just went and measured. One inch between the carbodies, 3/8" between the facing door frames. It's a lot less than the way they look in the latest Lionel catalog (now online at their homepage)

Note that while these are the same length as the MTH cars, they are lower and narrower, kind of like a Lionmaster version of a scale model, rather than a scale-size-except-for-three-inches-of-length that the MTH ones are.

  • love the vid

  • This set is aight

only thing i like from this set is the horn and bell, which fitted perfectly. It would've been better if lionel made this a scaled set with railsounds5.0, crewtalk, Towercom, operating pantographs, and maybe some horn quilling and stuff. The cars arent bad, but for me, MTH's version of the amfleets are much better. It would've been at top with the acela express they did. This set is still very good.

  • If they did that, the set would probably cost $1000+ and require 072 curves.

Granted, there are people who would still buy it like that, but a lot fewer than the number that will buy it as it is now.

  • ye i kno

It's just that this shud be comparable to its counterpart. I still like the set, but I'm a serious collector who loves realism to its real thing

In addition, even if it was equipped with legacy , some merchants wud sell it under $1000

    I saw a NS Tanktrain for $649.99

a GE Hybrid that was suppose to be $1000, but saw one for $699.99

  • cool set!!

  • Are the cars Aluminum or plastic ?

  • Plastic. The new MTH Amfleets shipping now look like stainless steel, but they're also plastic (albeit with a snazzy plating job) There's a thread on the O Gauge Railroading forum with photos.

  • Does this engine have engine sounds after it starts up besides the bell and horn?

  • Just the horn and bell. I believe Lionel calls this "SignalSounds".

The prototype doesn't have much else other than traction equipment blower fans.

  • Whats to say ? That's one hell of a review man... very cool !!!

  • I do have the Acela set, with the optional cars. And mine is in a box. Lol your video is the only thing, I saw with it in motion.

  • Not this video, commenting on your acela video, of course

  • Curiously enough, the box for this set is the exact same size as the Acela box.

  • You have the best taste in trains. I'm starting to collect/or add to my o scale train selection. And it just simply amazes me all of your video's you post, are either the set's i just bought, or the ones I'm eyeing up. I'm gonna build a huge set against the walls of my basement soon. But I collect in the meantime. It's just so funny, you post the exact trains I have, or just bought. It's gonna be a 60ftx20x60x20, set when I get to it. Atm, contemplating track to use.

  • I'm using GarGraves straights with Ross sectional curves for the first segment of the basement layout I'm building. It turned out cheaper than AtlasO (although I may use some on future lower levels)

  • Did you have problems w/ the amfleet coach lights? 2 of mine dont work & I hear it's been an issue

  • I've updated the description. Mine all work, but I've heard of the problem. It may just be as simple as loosening some of the body screws and jiggling the body against the chassis.

There are some discussions on the "O Gauge Railroading" forum (Google it--it'll be at the top of the results), about this issue, including some owners who were able to fix the problem.

  • Thanks - I checked out the OGR forum :)
