Tony Jaa is Thai Surin according to Thai people and Khmer Surin according to Khmer. But he's Thai citizen cuz Surin Province is in Thailand. I dont think Jaa's great grand parents crossed the borders to become Thai the borders crossed them. Surin, Burirum and Sisaket were Khmer land back then til the French drew the borders and those three provinces were given to Siam. My grand father was from Surin, to me, he'll always be known as Khmer Surin...he identifies himself as Khmer Surin.

There once was a tribe called the "Tais", in that group are the thais/laos of today. The Tais were an ethnic tribe in Southern China. Due to war and crap, they fled south, just like the hmongs of today that are living in thailand/laos. They also were an ethnic minority known as the Miao in Southern China.

Actually the ancient Khmer religion was influenced by India, but developed into its own form thats very distinct from India. But that was well over a millenium ago. The Thai culture as it stand is much more recent and is not just a direct influenced by the Khmer, but a near direct copy of it.
