Crimso and Yes, not only my favorite prog bands, but my favorite bands period. Combined with my age only being 14, I can assure you that although it may seem bleak, today's youth is not doomed!
I remember listening to this album when I was in high school. I have to thank one particular ex boyfriend for getting me hooked on Crimso. I will never. ever grow tired of this incarnation of King Crimson. They're just so damned good (and this song.. incredibly fun to try and "sing" along with... especially in the car.. where folks look at you like you're bonkers) :)
It's one thing when you make a lot of great albums, but it's another thing entirely when you make a lot of great albums that all sound completely different from each other.
...and who's that baboon conversing with the magazine stand? Evidently HE'S getting a good reply! :) Ha, ha, love it, great tune, totally intense. BRUFORD! - there's no match.
@worldcitizengrendel LOL! Wasn't it John (Lennon) who said....when asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world, responded: "he's not even the best drummer in the band!"? I tried to google it, but no luck!
THE TUNE OF MODERN CRIMSON THAT IS AN ALTERNATE SOUNTRACK TO BLADERUNNER AND OF COURSE THE GREAT BILL BRUFORD IS ON THE SKINS AND PLEXI AS IT WERE SANS THE HI HAT .
I love this song, probably my favourite song from King Crimson. But I can't help that this song was Maynards inpiration for Rossetta Stoned...well someone has to be inspired by something...
@axxeminister No offense but what kind of song do you play? I'm a 16 year old drummer...that's all I'm going to say otherwise I'm coming off as an asshole...
@axxeminister the beauty of Bill's drumming to me is the secret mixture of technical genius and pure imaginative drumming...like prog/art drumming...its an entity of its own....love his work on Discipline
@axxeminister Hey, you should try to play along with Bill on the bongos!
He is my favourite drummer, and I've been playing along to him since the early days of YES, including his solo stuff with guys like Patrick Moraz!
Fortunately, I can stray somewhat (on my bongos), and use lots of fills and finger rolls (what I do with my fingers, not some type of appetizer) or else I wouldn't have a chance of keeping up!
As Bill's motto goes..."when in doubt, roll!" LOL!
Primus is a good band. Really their both individual bands. Belew did an album a few years back with Claypool and Danny Carrey from Tool. That's a great one. They're all friends. This Crimson lineup I saw in 1984. They were just as incredible. Then I saw the double trio in 1996 and they did this here song to the mark. Pure excellence. Unmatched.
@loffe9 yeah, but just in one band i can see the full inspiration of king crimson, and that's tool. king crimson and tool are the best progressive bands, but king crimson is much better :)
1:05-1:18. Listen to Fripp. Just. Listen to that. I've never heard anything like that in my life. It's such a small part of the song, but it's so incredible.
The Three Albums... Three of a Perfect Pair, Beat, and Discipline... Discipline is the best in my opinion... but i still love them all... that and Thrak, Starless, Vroom, Larks tongue in Aspic, The Wake of Posiden, and yeah....
@cdawghimself - I could almost envy you if you've just now discovered this phase of Krimson. The only drawback being is that you wouldn't have seen the live performances in the early 80s. Absolutely mind blowing.
@cdawghimself - I could almost envy you if you've just now discovered this phase of Crimson. The only drawback being is that you wouldn't have seen the live performances in the early 80s. Absolutely mind blowing.
@cdawghimself - You're right. I can't quite understand what holds it together. It's chaos but makes sense in a crazy way. These three Crimson albums (Red, Yellow & Blue) are among my most consistently favorite music. Saw several shows during this era and let me say I was blown away.
What a brilliant idea: take the fact that a metropolis is a sort of hallucinatory, nightmare zoo, and compose a progressive rock song with an exquisitely, darkly beautiful aesthetic (particularly the middle section--i.e., the chorus) about that metropolis! Right now, every band and artist in America regards it/him/herself as nothing short of fascinating--and 99.9% of them bore me to tears.
I'm sorry, to you ambitious and probably quite talented musicians who try to cover King Crimson songs, but it just can't quite be done. Les Claypool is something of an exception, but even he would have to tip his hat to the Masters, I think. I wish I knew the story of how these four men came together to form this last and best incarnation of KC. Every song is perfect and a work of genius. They wrote these, and only they, on the planet, can really play these tunes right.
@derek4ur I'm sure there's a Fripp interview at elephanttalk regarding how the new lineup came together. I do know that Bruford quit Yes and joined KC pre- 80's incarnation, feeling Yes had reached it's peak. Belew recorded/ toured with Zappa, Bowie and the Talking Heads, and Levin played on Fripp's solo album 'Exposure.". The new band was originally going to be called Discipline.
@Asymmatrix Thanks very much--this is mostly news to me, though Iwas aware of Belew's affiliation with Zappa and Talking Heads. I'll look for an interview at elephanttalk.
Glad they chose to be called King Crimson--one of the best band names ever :)
@Asymmatrix I have only heard of League of Gentlemen. I'll check them out. It sounded fantasic to me, (in the sense of being hard to believe), but someone once told me Fripp has done some dance music, too--do you know if there is any truth to that?
I remember listening to the album Fripp did with Andy Sumners, guitarist for The Police, and liking that album very much.
@derek4ur I'm pretty sure they're referring to LOG when they reference Fripp's 'dance' music. Hardly the label I would give it, but it definitely does have a beat.
@derek4ur this isnt the last incarnation in the 90's pat mastelotto & tey gunn were picked up, then levin & bruford left, and then levin replaced trey and gavin harrison was added most recently
You can really tell where Primus gets their influence. I can also hear some early grunge in the vocals. Alice in Chains comes to mind. Its amazing how much King Crimson has influenced music and nobody even knows it.
What the 'ell!? Only 2 comments!? man, does anybody know good music or just the static formula? What a freakin' UNDERATED album. @Progulus4 Got to see them on this tour in Montreal. Had the t-shirt. Saw them in Toronto for 'Three of a Perfect Pair'. Was up front for both with my little friends. Both venues were outdoors and started late in the evening and into the night. The sound was perfect. I don't get all these comments about Fripp being so serious. He was having as much fun as everybody else on stage and with the audience. Scrap what I said about everybody else. Bruford's a middle class twat. Still, a great drummer.

King Crimson invented the concept (inadvertently) of "super group" with the line-up of Belew, Bruford, Fripp and Levin!
So much talent in one band, it boggles the mind!
