Gary, can you please re-upload this video at 480p. 240p doesn't seem sufficient to me. Merry christmas and a good explosion, if you're letting off fireworks on new year's eve, like we here, in Germany ;-)
Great tutorial Gary! Thanks so much for taking time to share your knowledge. Infinite Dangers is a comprehensive survival book! It's too bad you noted that the majority of sales were to immigrants who have experienced disaster in their homelands. Unfortunately North Americans in general have had too easy of a ride hence have normalacy bias...EVERYONE should own a copy of your book! Thanks again!

Do you think a ground level "blast" from an EMP would knock out satellite phones? I am presuming the blast wouldnt knock out the communication satellites but I wonder if there is ground based infrastructure needed to make a sat phone call ?
@metals0999 Almost all satellites launched since about 2000 have been "shielded" from EMP and solar bursts. Some satellites (especially recent Chinese satellites) have one purpose - destroy other satellites! Much of WW3 willbe fought in space. That's why the USA has built a vastly expensive but with WITH wide coverage buried fiber optic communications system so that our MIL would continue no matter what our attacker did. Ground based commercial satellite bakpack phones not well shielded.
@w0tm Those of our MIL are well shielded but at expense of 500% of commercial satellite phones. Nothing guaranteed - EMP close enough can overcome the absolute best shielding. More likely that satellites would be taken out by laser guns. There are satellites in space today equipped with laser guns as well as other weapons. Also theoretical but possible massive weapons. Google the term "rods from God" real? classified.
@FREEsilverGiveaway thank you - more to come covering my book Infinite Dangers. Sorry I'm behind schedule. Have had health problems. Next tutorials will be one on power and batteries and another on EMP
I have just read "One Second After", the EMP novel by William R Forstchen. He mentions the small proportion of US military equipment, including helicopters, stored permanently in EMP-proof containers and hangars. But what happens if a second EMP blast is set off a day or two after the first one? All the protected equipment will be outside their protective shield and totally vulnerable to damage. If i were planning an EMP operation, I'd set pulses off day 1, day 3 and day 7 - that'd do the job!
@Myrmecia i HAVE BEEN ALL OVER DOD AND PENTAGON WITH WHAT CONTACTS I STILL HAVE LEFT SAYING EXACTLY THAT! THAT IS WHY I SAY IN MY BOOK BUY MULTIPLE RADIOS! I OWN SIX KA500 RADIOS PLUS MULTIPLE HAM RADIOS ALL IN 32 GAL GS TRASH CANS. NEED TO EMP SHIELD EQUIPMENT ITSELF TO USE IT AND OUR MIL HAS DONE GOOD JOB OF THAT. CHINA TOOK BEST SHOT USING OVERHEAD EMP GUN AT NAVY AND ALMOST NO DAMAGE. WIPED OUT PRINCESS CRUISE BOAT THOUGH. THAT WAS THE CATALINA ISLAND COVER UP. I HAVE PHOTO OF MISSILE.
according to the congressional report 140,000feet of 26.5 miles would only effect about 480 miles to cover the entire US you need a high altitude explosion of about 300 miles, about 1.5million ft. and a UPS will not protect your computer from a EMP. again the only way to protect your electronics is to store them in a Faraday box. you would need at least 3 small yield nukes exploded at 30 miles up to cover the entire US.
@ABGAN100 yes, UPS would do nothing. Faraday is just the name of the guy who invented a shielding box in the 19th(?) century. Nothing magical about "Faraday". But if you want to build Faraday box be my guess. For what it's worth a $17 32 gallon steel galvanized trash can from Home Depot works just as well (or better). To save money Faraday boxes are often made with screen material to save on metal. So pulse with wavelength shorter than hole sizes gets through. Trash can stops it ALL.
@w0tm Tesla did both a surge onto the wired power lines plus EMP (they think) that burnt out items not plugged into wall socket. Town then burnt down his lab and he barely escaped with his life. In his lab was 35 years of records showing amazing inventions the world still hasn't regained. Like wireless electricity. Edison swore he saw it demonstated by Tesla and they were talking price for the invention. Telsa died a pauper all records destroyed. Faraday box - best metals copper, silver, gold
@ABGAN100 I've given up trying to get anyone in authority to listen to me but nuke or nukes NOT needed! A ground based EMP generation system is cheap (compared to a nuke) easy to build, parts from GE industrial (that sells to big power companies). Nikola Tesla created first major EMP in 1899 (blowing up electric plant of Colorado Springs when he accidentally fed charged up HUGE capacitors INTO power line going to his lab. Blew out most of town's electrical products. He was run out of town.
@w0tm - You wrote: - "A ground based EMP generation system is cheap (compared to a nuke) easy to build" In the EMP novel "One Second After", Forstchen mentions that EMP is effective only over line of sight, so a ground-based generator would have a limited range compared to a blast set of 25 miles up.
@Myrmecia TRUE -- THERE IS COMPTON EFFECT THAT EXTENDS IT A BIT BUT LISTEN TO MY C&c COMMAND AND CONTROL TALK. NO NEED TO WIPE OUT TRACTORS IN KANSAS. 25 MILE RADIUS OF A DOZEN CITIES WOULD BE SAME AS NUKES AT 30 MILES. wALL ST, nyc, dc, sIL vALLEY ETC. THAT'S ENOUGH TO TOSS US INTO14TH CENTURY.
@ABGAN100 i'VE READ THE REPORT. DECENT BUT NUMBER OF TECHNICAL ERRORS. BETTER THAN NOTHING. THEY NEEDED AN EMP EXPERT AND AN EXPERIENDED HAM RADIO OPERATOR HELP WRITE IT. BUT IT IS ADEQUATE AS IS EXCEPT EMPHASIS ON ONLY NUKES WILL CREATE EMP. MANY MANY WAYS TO CREATE EMP ENOUGH TO WIPE OUT ELECTRONICS OF GOOD SIZED CITY. NUKE IS NOT NEEDED.
@w0tm in 1859 solar flare also known as the solar superstore occurred Telegraph systems all over Europe and North America failed, in some cases even shocking telegraph operators. it a replica of that solar storm were to occur today or in the near future the damage it would cause might well equal that of a nuclear emp attack.
@ABGAN100 I've read that in history. Many systems now being buried plus data going to fiber optic (light) which EMP would not effect so we are in much better shape than 1859. But it would do major damage to low cost systems. like overhead tv cable lines.
@w0tm fiber optics lines would not be damaged but the electronics running them would be rendered useless. computer chips integrated circuits are extremely fragile when it comes to EMP. and did not exist in 1859 but now are in nearly everything, the power grid, water, communication's industry heavily dependent on electronics, the food industry etc. the people of 1859 were relatively unaffected by the solar storm, if it were to occur today we might see as much as 2/3rds the world population die.
@ABGAN100 you must be a EE! yes the electronics before and after the light could be fried by EMP .. But the light would not pick up EMP like and antenna. So super shield all of the electronics on both ends and all will be ok. Supposedly the new super secret (not very secret) gvt private Internet is almost all fiber. Just got turned on. Is that what this EAS thing is all about? Sprint did the job I understand. yes ICs are thousands of times more EMP zappable than transistors - sm wires
@w0tm all in my book for what it's worth. few people will to buy book but will waste thousands on junk that is worthless. I have a chapter called "what was I thinking!" listing the crazy stuff people bought for survival. Like generators, BBQ grills, lots more -- makes sense until I tell you why they are NOT to be bought for survival! People need an expert helping them but 99% prefer to ignore the whole subject. VERY few sales from USA! Ostrich head in the sand syndrome. NORMALCY BIAS.
@ABGAN100 I feel sooo sorry for all of the survivalists I do consulting for who have spent $100K covering their roof with solar cells. Then I tell them. Those panels are thousands of semiconductors - silicon based. EMP will take them all out. They can be protected for between $15K and $200K depending on how safe you want to be. I have solar panels 4x wrapped in Reynolds Wrap, ends shorted andgrounded then buried 3 ft underground. I'll dig them up. Inverters and C&C all have semis too!
@ABGAN100 True but save time and money and buy a $17 GS trash can at Home Depot! Don't believe me? Buy can then put radio full volume on strongest AM station (then FM) in bottom of can. Signal will disappear! So will possibility of EMP getting into the trash can. EMP is just very wide band radio frequency energy. Same as lightning bolt. NOT ROCKET SCIENCE. Faraday is just a man's name. Nothing magical. Just metal box. A GS trash can is Faraday can if you want to call it that.
@w0tm your absolutely correct you don't have to spend a lot of money to make a Faraday box any enclosure complected surrounded by conductive metal will do!
@ABGAN100 yes - -just an accident trying a GS trash can I had in garage. Not technical. Tight lid adds about 10 decibels of extra attentuation. Be sure to remove batteries from stored electronics as batteries in storage do leak and can ruin electronics.
@ABGAN100 I'm a retired EE with many patents, books, etc. and I still "forget" occasionally so don't feel bad. All make mistakes. Also, most people don't know some rechargeable batteries discharge like 1% a day on their own just left alone plus some electronics still draw miniscule power even when off. So always best to remove batteries rechargeable type or not if not going to be used for a day or two. I have complete explanation of all but most exotic batteries in my latest book.
In searching for the Kaito radio I see there are 2 different KA500models. Theres the Kaito KA500-BK and the Kaito KA500-GR. Is one better than the other?
@SonoVox100 same color BK black GR green they have newer models KA600 and KA650 with more "features" but basic good shortwave reception, crank and solar power appears to be same on all three. So take your pick. My KA500's are just fine. Just make sure radio has shortwave, crank power and solar power. And be sure to plug in internal nicad rechargeable battery! Most people miss this then complain when crank only lasts 30 seconds. Plug is next to AA batteries - tiny connector.
@Myrmecia DEPENDS ON SIZE OF WIRES IN BATTERY. RECOMMEND REMOVING BATTERIES FROMRADIO THEN STORING BATTERIES IN GS TRASH CAN WITH RADIOS. BE SURE CONNECTORS DON'T TOUCH OTHER METAL TO SHORT OUT.
@SonoVox100 I crank a new Kaito for 5 min and it will play for days IF internal battery is plugged in! As usual Japanese instruction booklets are incomplete. Don't mention "plug in the internal battery". Tiny plug so easy to miss. Inside lightbulb light will NOT work -- wrong kind of light -- needs to be outdoor light for solar cells to produce power. Low power warning light on front is nice feature. Tells you when it is time to crank a bit. Yes, most other crank radios have poor specs.
@gasdorf survival communications was scattered all over Youtube but not in one video so way past due to do such a video. I cover all of this in much greater (non-techie) detail in my book ww infinitedangers com but sales have not been huge. They were HUGE when I was GIVING the book away but, in checking months later maybe 1% at most had even been skimmed! People value things at price they pay. So I added a price. NOW the much smaller list EVERYONE reads the book now then have LOTS
@w0tm better to have 500 people fully prepped for emergencies big and small than 10,000 who have the knowledge stuck away in a file they long ago lost. Worthless. Too bad - I've had readers say "I saved $8.95 just by reading the Table of Contents! Sales potential will be millions of copies 10 seconds AFTER TSHTF but, guess what? TOO LATE! 80% of sales are overseas! American sales are almost all first generation Americans. Vietnamese, Laotian, Africa, etc. They know IT CAN HAPPEN HERE!
@NAVYGOLDEIGHTFOUR happy to help. I notice Amazon has major sales this weekend on both family radio service and Marine band radios. Almost all being sold are in pairs but read fine print.
@puapake from the shaking you'd think so. The older dog has a permanent ead infection and when he HAS to itch it no way to get him to stop hitting part of his front leg on the wood floor which shakes things, Bough them off with dog treats but only lasted five minutes Thanks for watching.
@solojam you're welcome -- sorry it was so long -- I've always believed in either do it right or not at all. This covered all the bases and did it right.
Communications MIGHT be of great importance (or might not). IF it is an EMP event with a short wave radio protected in a galvanized steel trash can you;ll be the only person in your town that will know what happened. A full scale EMP attack combined with cyber warfare (computer attack) it would throw us into the 14th century.Armageddon.
brother I do not have many heros, but you are definitlely one of them, if you get time check out my solar power generaters "my videos" I build and sell locally, if you would be interested in building yourself one let me know and I will attempt to guide you through the process
@collapseprep101 thank you! Flattery will get you everywhere! If you don't have my book send me your e-mail and I'll send you a free copy. gyantis@gmail.com If you do have a copy you have my permission to make a copy of yours and give to a friend. Thanks for your offer on a solar power generator. I just realized I didn't cover "power" at all. I'll do another video calling it "part B" or something. I think I'm pretty well covered on solar power but I'll get with you if I want to add.
@w0tm I have a solar panel matrix, control system, marine deep discharge batteries and a lot more. One thing I must cover and that I've ruined the month for many when I told them their solar panels are toast even if hit by minor EMP. I suspect you know this but solar panels are a matrix of solar cells which are SEMICONDUCTORS! I've heard from people proud to show me photos of their self sustaining VERY rural log home - house provides all needed power! Neat! But their roof is mostly solar
@w0tm panels. Besides worry of ice storms lightning is a worry. The better panels include hail protection panels that decrease sun just a few percent. I've talked to some of the manufacturers and they just draw a blank when I ask them about EMP or even lightning. I've done some free consulting for these folks considering their huge investment. Maybe I'll add it as a retirement business. I had to retire early due to Lyme plus a weird type of pneumonia I've apparently had for years but
@w0tm no doctor has been able to figure out. Not much energy. Need a partner with energy where I just have the knowledge. Plus I can't earn much due to Social Security rules. I've been encouraged to market my solar panel EMP protection system (need to get busy and get it patented) - uses 95% over the counter products and 5% custom built. Then market a laptop EMP leather EMP protection product for laptops. It's basically a 3M RF sleeve with a few additions. Works great. Considering the
@w0tm millions of laptops if EMP keeps growing in the media going ballistic over it I'd guess it's a product that would sell well. I was into EMP working for the Atomic Energy Commission when the phenomena was discovered. I wrote my senior thesis on EMP not knowing a professor had DOD contacts and sent it to them. The next thing I knew I had "men in black" at school and I was on the AEC payroll before graduating! I had a dept of 200 my first day of full-time work. Age 24. People don't
@w0tm believe me until I show them my AEC Top Secret employee badge. When I went on to eventually start companies they were getting us into OFFENSIVE EMP and ELF (extra low frequency) 1 Hz to 15 Hz research. Things that describe HAARP (I don't believe HAARP is a "culprit" but someone is. We had the resonance of earh measured and figured out how to send targeted "beams" thru the earth @ 2.56 Hz. I see this huge uptick in earthquakes and wonder what I did has progressed to (if anything).
@w0tm busier in retirement than when I owned companies - all now sold except for consulting (Social Security has loopholes that allows that if retiree sells his means of income). Are you selling your solar generator? Is it to generate electricity or heat (cooking)? If electricity you may need some tweeks to advertise "EMP protected". That is going to be a big selling point (IMO). I'm just starting to talk to several companies involved in solar products (with silicon junctions).

Is a rechargeable battery itself (stored outside an appliance or radio) vulnerable to an EMP?

@NAVYGOLDEIGHTFOUR happy to help. I notice Amazon has major sales this weekend on both family radio service and Marine band radios. Almost all being sold are in pairs but read fine print.

That was funny, is the dog holding your camara? =)
puapake 4 months ago
@puapake from the shaking you'd think so. The older dog has a permanent ead infection and when he HAS to itch it no way to get him to stop hitting part of his front leg on the wood floor which shakes things, Bough them off with dog treats but only lasted five minutes Thanks for watching.

thanks for the wisdom
