Also, I think relaxing hair is like doing chemistry, you have to be consistant under the same conditions or else things can go wrong. That's why relaxing can be risky. People should keep their hair only in whatever state they feel its healthy, a relaxer is not for everyone. Also, excess disulfide bonds are not a necessity, it's just an trait of curly haired people(ie. freckles, you can also get rid of those too). But yeah, I respect and love natural hair (just playing devil's advocate! )
It is a bit like chemistry, and I think people should also, but there is a lot of deception going on in the name of business and most people go for "Pretty" over health. Those bonds are necessary. They are what ties everything together and holds the hair together. (see side bar or google) Another misconception sadly. Take away the strength and what does that leave you with? Looks how we're taught it should to be "Pretty" but is it really healthy.
Haven't done much research on this but, don't todays relaxers if done correctly, restructurize the hair (break down the bonds to straigthen it and neutralized to rearrange the bonds to the straight position). Also, like natural hair it needs to be cleansed and nourished routinely. Maybe certain hair types (overly porous or fine) can't go through the restructurizing therefore break easily, but otherwise it should have minimal or slight damage as a trade off (with good treatments).
No there is no rearranging bonds. They are broken and that's it. Neutralizing just stops the chemicals from completely breaking the hair down further. The beauty industry don't have the same rules as others when it comes to false advertising. There is no actual way to "restructure hair" on a molecular level. Yes you can temporarily treat a symptom like dry hair by using something that will draw moisture to your hair but you can't rebuild or "fix" damage once it's been done.
Like I mentioned in the video, the strongest bonds in your hair are the disulphide bonds, once they are broken there is no "restructuring" for any hair type and so the damage is not slight because it's irreversible. That's why after a relaxer the hair never curls back up to the natural curl pattern. The only way to get it back is YOU CANT (not yelling emphasizing). You would have to wait until your hair grows out.
I know a lot of people who relaxed said their hair was long and healthy, but from my experience my hair was really short and brittle, very stringy and not "good looking" whatsoever nor healthy. Now I'm perm-free and on my way to learning how my natural hair is like, granted it's still not healthy yet, I'm still learning about what works best for me.
I see what you're talking about Lakishia, reminds me of the girls in high school with "long" hair that's only to their shoulders and doesn't ever get longer and the other things you described. Split ends everywhere but since their hair was "longer" than other peoples they flaunted it as if it is better. That's good Lakishia, I hope you enjoy your natural journey and you're trial and error stage doesn't take long. It can be frustrating figuring it out sometimes.
The 'bones in your arm' analogy is actually not that bad and here's why. Anyone who's broken a bone knows that althouth they heal, they are never the same as they were originally. It's the same thing with a perm / relaxer etc. because IT IS PERMANENT. I've seen this issue from both sides of the spectrum (permed my hair for many years, did a BC, got loc'd, then took the locs out and wore my natural hair loose. I know it's an issue and I just hope we can all respect each other. Much love!!
When my hair was relaxed people always told me that it "looked" so healthy. It was so much work to keep up that look. It was very long but one false move and it was frazzled and frizzy and needed to be trimmed often. Now that I am natural. I no longer have as many split end or dandruff. My scalp is most improved. You are right. Healthy relaxed hair is an illusion. I have nothing against those who relax their hair. It is just not for me anymore.
You hit the nail on the head: Folks (of all races, really) are conditioned to see long pin-straight blindingly-shiny hair as healthy. I always thought it was funny how excited some black women got when Pantene Relaxed and Natural came out...I believe they thought they'd have hair just like the white girls in the commercials! Ultimately I don't care what individuals do to their hair...just don't tell me what to do with mine. Yet, because I'm nappy, people think they need to give me hair advice!
I love your videos so much. You'er a wise young lady. I know your Mother and father Love you. With me about my hair. I wake up from being brain wash by the world. Know I'm so happy being me. I love your hair it is so beautiful!!!!!! May God bless you and keep you and give you peace.
I'm so glad you like them Mrs. Naturaly4us {:o) Thank you so much and I wish the same for you ma'am. You're an amazing woman and role model, Thank you again
You are nerdy!!...lol, but thank you for breaking down the hair structure scientifically....I was actually lookin at a site a few days ago that talked about this....I also learned that depending on your DNA everyone can not grow long flowing hair...everyone has a specific hair growth cycle...so that dispells all the hair commercials of women with LONG flowing hair like that means healthy hair too..which is not true....thanks for sharing...
I agree with you

That's a good point, people do seem to want to give more hair advice to people that don't have straight hair it seems.
