Actually, Rammstein meant to have the lyrics as "Hasst" which mean "Hate" in german, "Hast" means "Have". So it's "You, you hate me. You hate me."

When the lyric becomes "du hast mich gefragt" it must be 'hast', because that's a standard German construction for saying "you asked me" (or 'you have asked me'). Before that, either it is "you hate me" or it is just building up to the full lyric. So it's a play on words.

@JustGabe uhm no heh Du hast mich means you have me, Du (you) Hast (you informal form of the verb Haben(to have)) Mich which is accusative, and it means me. you hate me wouldn't really make sense IMO. Im pretty sure this is basically like wedding vowels, and then the response is no, as in he doesn't wanna get tied down and married. I'm not from a German speaking country so I cannot be 100%. I do practice the language at my university however, butI think that is what its getting at.

no german would say "du hast mich", so when you hear the beginning you think its "du hasst mich" (you hate me). but when you her "du hast mich gefragt", you know it cannot be "hasst".

so it means both..

and no "hast" and "hasst" is pronounced exactly the same. there is no word "haßt" in german.

go to Herzeleid (google it) website there are very good translations of most of Rammstein's songs. Jeremy Williams doesn't just translate them he goes into double meanings, wordplay, nuance, references, etc.
