  • Great tip...never would've even thought of this..

  • Great idea, could have saved me a few knocks to my head. Thanks again Tim

  • i have a white,black and red wire in the ceiling. what is the red wire for? anybody know?

  • if you have a white, a red and black wire they are the following:

    Red=110 volts

    Black=110 volts

    White is neutral

    They are used for a 220 volt fixture or if you want to get two 110 volt fixtures do this: you have to use the white twice because for one 110 volt fixture it uses a black white and ground, for the other wire (red) you put red and white for the second wire. make sure it is grounded (bare/green wire)

    add up 110 + 110 and it equals 220, so the red wire is 110 volts

    ok! lol

  • The white wire is your return power, or the neutral wire that sends power back to the source which needs to be on the lighter screw terminal on your fixture. Black is the power feeding to the dark terminal on the light, and the common on your 3-way switches. And red is a traveler in between the 3-ways giving each switch power to control your light on and off from each location.

  • i make custom light fixtures with a company here in seattle. good trick, copper wire is sturdy but youve gotta tell them to balance it right. the way you did it is great but i can see a lot of people having a lopsided fixture lol

  • Thanks! This tip was just for temporary hanging, not permanent. Once the work in the room is complete and just before the table is brought back in, then the light comes back down to its normal height.

  • great tim, but what about a more pressing issue like double- light-fixture installation? thanks.

  • Match the colors of the wires.

  • thank you!

    let there be Light!

  • Tim, another great idea. Thanks.
