stumbled on all of the postings by Magog64. Brought back great memories of this concert. Thanks for keeping a record of this amazing night. There were not many concerts at this venue in Montreal and this was the best that I can remember. Did you record any of Harmonium's concerts? If you did please post anything you have.
One more thing, my dear followers of immortal music. I served in the Canadian Military as a Signaller, ( radio operator) and in 2007 I was overseas in Afghan. And if you where ever in Kandahar city every Thursday that year, you would hear Dancing with the Moonlit Night and Suppers Ready from miles away, as I blasted it from our RG figthing vehicle, I believe if "democracy" should ever come to Afghanistan so could the best music the Western world has to offer.
When I watch this, I wish to god that I was born in the greatest of generations. this is modern poetry, that rivals the best of english renaissance. I thank my astute father and my mother, the queen of maybe, that they willed me their vinyls. this band will forever remain my own personal Genesis, of life and influence .
forever a dreamer, with a twist of the world we know, dancing out with the moonlit night.
I also saw this show. It was also simulcast by landmark FM rock station CHOM-FM. You can find that live show audio recording on the internet. I was not aware there was any video footage, Thanks Magog64!!
Peter Mayer you make a good point. I liked the Belgium TV set better mostly because the atmosphere created by their music is mental. No set can really do it justice. The lighting was better on the TV set and when Gabriel syarted wailing on the tambourine I was in awe. Never saw them played that way.
Great footage Magog64. I had many of these videos on vhs all cut and mostly 4th and 5th gen. These are a real treat. I thought I had the corner covered 1980's pre pc with my O'l tapes feeling privliged, trading with like minded thru snail mail. There was an excitment to it then thats sort of lost with the net yet its so cool to see these in better quality. Thanks
Can you tell me my country lies....questo intro è per me in assoluto ...una delle melodie più belle della storia della musica che il genere umano abbia mai creato ed ascoltato!!!
@Relayer6a Phil was a main part of what genesis was back in the days and his success prove that your an idiot. Even Peter Gabriel wasent able to recreate what beast Genesis was in his solo albums. Dont get me wrong i think that Genesis Gabriel era was the best and is the only one for me.
My point is Phil is an excellent drummer. One of the best. His work with brand X was brilliant. Peter is a better front man. Again, one of the best. Phil should play the drums. He's "THAT" good at it. I'm not the one proven to be an idiot here.
@BwhildBwhildB Phil's success doesn't prove that he was a lynchpin...only that he was able to grab an opportunity and take advantage of it...along with the drive, talent, and good nature to keep it going. If you really want to have an idea of where Genesis could be had the kept the flame, you might want to peruse the entire Steve Hackett catalog. They dissed him and his contributions so he left and did what was true to the form.
A high moment in my young life. Imagine a venue of approx. 5000 die hard fans. The sound was loud and clear. The whole place literaly exploded. Gabriel introduced every song in fluent French. Not bad for a Saxon mother's son...
I saw the TIOA tour AND The Box recently. I preferred the set list the Box had to the Genesis set (No Supper's Ready? Criminal!), but Genesis was just so passionate in their performance. Genesis is my favorite band, old AND new. I suppose I'm just strange.
You know, you're right about Tull...there's lots of pro-shot footage from 69-71 (TV shows, promos, live), and then again from '76 on, but 72-75--which includes the tours for two chart-topping albums in the US--is barren except for audience-shot snippets!
As a HUGE fan of Tull's progressive era ('72-'75), I am SHOCKED and saddened by the fact that there is no pro-shot live footage of the band during that period. (That we know of.)
And those were the years when Tull was at the peak of their popularity.
@KingHellstrings True. The only thing we've seen of that Paris July 1975 show is the song Minstrel in the Gallery... and it's mimed for some reason.
In the December 1975 issue of Circus Magazine, Ian mentions that Chrysalis Records filmed approx 70 minutes of that Paris show. And it would be released to the public as a Chrysalis "video disk". However, the technology didn't exist at that time. Laser discs and VHS tapes wouldn't come out for another 4 or 5 years.

I understand how Steve could be so frustrated; the cameras hardly ever go to him when he's playing a solo.

Now if only someone could find footage like this of Jethro Tull from 1974.
PaulHartXYZ 3 years ago 3
I liked Tull as well very much so- not at the same level as early Genesis though...with all due respect to Anderson a genius in his own right...
SherriesBrother 3 years ago
Hey... I LOVE LOVE LOVE Genesis (during the Gabriel era)... just about as much as Tull from the same era.
But there is some very good footage of Genesis during the 1972-1975 years.
There is almost NOTHING of Tull during those years... even though they were one of the most popular touring bands in the world during that period.
That's why I'm challenging ANYONE to find REAL pro-shot footage... besides the poor quality stuff I've already uploaded on YouTube.
