However it didn't take me long to realize how deep Maher's comments were deeply hurtful to an entire community (whatever Arab's want to dress up in, niqab or Levis jacket.) @93ym In saudi Arabia, they are not forced to wear burqas. (A burqa is a full cloak that covers the face btw.) However in saudi arabia it is compulsory to wear a veil to cover the hair, NOT the face. In Eqypt and Iraq, the government doesn't force women to cover. Get your facts right.

First of all nuns are voluntary members of a religious order & have willingly taken on such dress as part of vows of modesty. No one forces them to dress that way, by law or by custom. Second, nuns are only relevant to devout Catholics, & the majority of Americans aren't devout Catholics. If women in Muslim countries are forced by law to wear hijab or pressured by family, then you are comparing apples and oranges. And, while 90% may not wear burqa, many more wear hijab.

I'm pretty sure they also don't factor crushed dissenters into their life expectancy figures either. They are a repressive state founded on information control. You like comparisons of freedom of press? but not violent crime or the fact the US government incarceration rate is seven times that of china. Far more Americas are suffering under US government laws than Chinese in China.

Islam is a very hateful and oppressive movement. Islamic men are so very afraid of their women becoming independent and self sufficient that they do everything in their power to keep women down. It seems to me that most progressive or left thinking people are very sympathetic to Islam and this confuses me on many levels.
Two of the main tenets of progressive liberal values are women's rights and gay rights. We all know how Islam views women as second class citizens.

It would be difficult to find a more offensive video or a more offensive person than Bill Maher. If he'd done a piece like this about some of the strange clothing and hairstyles of Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn or near the Wailing Wall, in Jerusalem, or mentioned the prominent Jewish Rabbi, based in New York, who was arrested for trafficking in human organs (as he did execution by stoning), Maher would have been off the air before the show had ended.
