  • what's the PSI you're using?

  • the Blade is FABOULOUS

  • Comment removed

  • what brushes are you using

  • thanks a lot for the vid, i had been having trouble figuring out exactly how i wanted to paint my space wolves and decided this was the way to go, looks amazing

  • I feel destroyed now. I thought my SW were nice.

  • @theseventhson95 painting stuff like this isn't hard. He airbrushes and if you don't airbrush you will never get to this magnatitude of awesomeness. I recently inherited my fathers badger airbrush that he got in the 80's and tbh it makes my painting 100x easier. No longer do i have to sit there and base coat for hours when now it takes 10 minutes for 10 guys. This isn't hard to do at all it just takes a little practice. I'm almost at this level and my stuff looks amazing.

  • @shadowsnip1 well it is true that i am not an expert in airbrushing although i have used the technique several times. It is just that his overall result is better.

  • amazing!

  • Thats alot of paint o_O

  • Absolutely love the effect on the sword. That alone just convinced me to get an airbrush... which I have been putting off for a long time. (Old one died and just never replaced it.)

  • 6 dislikes those people have no talent

  • that sword!

  • What is the airbrush that you use. I see it is BADGER but wich one?

  • OH MY GOD THAT SWORD IS THE DEFINITION OF HOLY AWESOMENESS!

  • i dont even..... i just... wow. i'm gonna train to be as good as you one day.

  • Key component, Patiance.

  • any tips on how to make frost axes look frostay? :D good job btw

  • The airbrush gives a lot smoother "feathering" effect than hand painted, but you can still use the same technique to reach the color-effect (the transition wont be as smooth).

  • Borrow a Blow Dryer from Mom? Sister?

    What about Grandma?

Lol Awesome work, lots of inspirations!

  • all i have to say is SICK!!!!!

  • hey its just a thought but....has anyone ever tried painting the pieces BEFORE glueing them together? it seems like it would be a little easier...

  • How thin are your paints? Meaning how much do you water them down? I can not seem to find the proper watering for a brand new jar of GW paints.

  • Great stuff! Just about to get into painting Warhammer and these guides have been great!

Where did you get hold of this marine model ?

  • Great video very useful. Just one question why do you use windex?

  • Hi very well done! But a question: If you wouldnt have an airbrush, how would you paint the sword?

  • APJ Soft Body Black Wash.

Is that stuff really black? It looks much more like a transparent slightly blueish middle grey.

Holy screaming bells! That sword!! >:D

I need an airbrush right now!!

  • Dude, when I saw the sword.... I was seriously speechless, I literally had a grin on my face when I saw it. As of now, all of my swords will be painted like that.

  • im half way through my space wolf army and i've decided i want to change colour scheme wat should i do??

  • the sword that started it all . thousands and thousands of copies have been done since this was released... but still the bst of them all.... nice 1 bud

  • I love the paint job especially the sword I think its a little dark so when i do mine i may use lighter colors for the armor. I have a question though. I want to air brush and magnetize my models what would be the best way to do it. I was thinking of using a stand in model that holds the arms for me on the non standard parts while i paint them or am i over thinking this. should i just do them separate from the body?

  • Yeaaaa, this takes too much time and money

  • Awesome is all i can say. I'm a perfectionist which kind of puts me off taking up the hobby. I see 23 paints being used for this single miniture. £££££ must have been spent to get it this good. How much do you spend on paint if you dobt mind me asking.

  • hi les i just started painting,i recently saw your videos and now i can't wait to try to paint space marines with the air brush thanks to you!

i'm not a really patient guy when it comes to 40k (don't ask me why) and looking at your tecnique with the airbrush it does nt seem so crazy to paint

i wanted to ask you for how long have been painting and do you think black templars would come out well painting them with the air brush?

    thanks

    ryan

  • I tried this with painters tape and I left it alone for a few minutes because i was doing several blades at once, heres a hint, take the tape off right after you spray both sides, if you dont, it will bleed through. Ive recently bought the tamiya tape hoping for better results next time i try, but I'm using the GW sprayer, and it comes out a little chunky... any tips on how to fix that?

  • best ever paint jobs ever keep it up

English: yes they truly are, im going to try to paint my swords that way but it wont be easy

  • Very detailed. Nice job and tutorial. Awesome!

  • The blade technique will be perfect for my Grey Knights, with some mid transitions as well.

  • bro, i LOOOVE the sword!!

Thats goin on my minis ASAP

  • I wanna be able to paint like this :P

  • great job man, im just starting out. i dont own an air brush so im doing everything buy brush. mostly a detail brush.

i dont really understand what people mean by 1:1 mix etc. can you explain it to me.

  • @TheNanoc 1:1 means that you mix 2 paints with equal amounts of each paint and then mix them together. Say for instance that it was 1:1 mechrite red and bleached bone, you would mix 1 drop of mechrite red and 1 drop of bleached bone. If you want accurate mixes, I would probably suggest vallego or P3 paints as those are in droppers instead of pots like GW paints, but you will need a plate or mixing pallette if you use dropper paint. Enjoy.

  • Great tutorial! Your power sword technique rocks!

  • Wicked paint job. Love the sword! And the funny looks from your momma and sister priceless. Love the vids, keep them coming.

  • After everytime you change color do you clean the whole airbrush?

  • how long did this model take to paint

  • do you water down your paints and if so what ratio??

  • You are fantastic. You have an incredible eye and steady hands.

  • Worth watching just for the technique for painting the sword.

    Awesome work my friend.

  • Holy mother....awesome -running to shop for airbursh......

  • i love your work

  • i really like the technique on the blade but not too much the colour, does anyone know some other colours that would look good?

  • Windex? is this the store bought glass cleaner Windex? or is it something else?

  • great job. the power sword is awesome.

  • Why did you not simply prime the model in black?

  • How do you mix the paints used in the airbrush? Do you simply drop some paint and dilution into the airbrush directly?

  • Excellent videos just got back into painting since GW became so expensive.

  • Awesome Airbrush work!!Love the sword....

  • my tatooist isnt even this keen! are you fucken serious!?

  • does anyone know where i can get warhammer stuff in vegas cause i just moved down here

  • thats just amazing man i really wish i could paint like you

  • Slightly off topic, your paints are so smooth! I know you add liquitex flow medium to all your paints but which medium? Also do you add anything else when you add the medium (eg h2o)?

Live in NZ and want to do an order to liquitex, but I need to get it correct though, thanks!

  • I find placement of the tape a little difficult. I'm using tweezers and a sculpting tool. I've also tried with just my fingers, but I'm always off slightly. Any tips and tricks?

  • @JaySharp604 For the sword it was just 'eyeballing' the line. For masking curved areas like axes etc, Silly Putty and sculpting tools are your friend.

  • @awesomepaintjob Thanks LB!

  • What do you have the model mounted on? Oh, fantastic work by the way!

  • @nightl0rdx it's 3M Blu-tac on a GW pot. poster tac basically.

  • 2 things 1st what is windex? and second why do you use gloves? but fantastic painting

  • @WarhammerUnited101 windex is car windscreen cleaner, its the blue stuff

  • @otterdog95 thanks but why would you use that?

  • @WarhammerUnited101 its a paint thinner, you can get a expensive thinner or use it as a cheap alternative

  • @otterdog95 why not use water?

  • @WarhammerUnited101 He initially tried using water however the paint got clogged in the airbrush. So he asked some people on a forum and they recommended windex and since he started using windex he have had no problems.

  • @lordmetroid do you know the windex ratio? im using the GW paint sprayer, and on the bottle it shows you what it wants for your amount of paint and water on the side of the pot. do you just replace all teh water with windex?

  • @adamvallieres01 From what I can recall I never heard ey speak of any windex to paint ratio.

  • That sword is just amazing. You make it look so easy!

  • Fucking Pro style O.O

  • i like you ^^, u are left handed!! ;D

  • That is definetly how i am doing my swords from now on :)

  • your really good at painting would you ever consider painting other people armies for money

  • This helped alot thank you very much

  • * jaw drops at sword * o...my.....God......

  • @xXChettomanXx fk yeah

  • What chapter are you going to paint next?

  • first watching your painting but must say you are definitely on top your game

    awesome job :D

  • hey Les: Generally would you say Varnish after finishing or leave it without?

  • @LonzoInHerEmbrace I always varnish my models with Krylon Matte Clear.

  • freakin sweet awesomepaintjob, love the power wpn (or perhaps frost blade ;] )

  • Could you explain the theory of using an air brush for the highlights please? Great work with the Wolves!

  • @666ThrashSlayer Hold a mini under the light. Highlights are the bright areas. Depending on where you want you light source to be coming from. In this tutorial it was imagined directly above. Google "painting highlights on mini's" to find some theory.

  • How did Windex become a good idea for watering down your airbrush paints? I know earlier you said stuff about a friend telling you it's a good idea but... any ideas on why it actually turned out to be a good idea?

  • @OverlordFxR Weird I know. I was having trouble with thinning mediums and the airbrush was spraying like trash. Went on to some airbrush forums and people said to use windex. I though "weird" but OK. I tried it and all my problems were solved. I dont know how, it just works.

  • First rate video, tones of inspiration for my long overdue Space Wolfe army

  • epic painting dude

  • stupid little question,

if one was to blow in to the air hose of a airbrush would it work?

  • @otterdog95 If you can blow consistently at 15-20psi and not pass out sure. I do not recommend it though. Just save up and get the proper tools.

  • you work is simply.......AMAZING!!

  • your work is simply.....amazing!

  • Great videos Les - Have you ever used gloss varnish on the eyes of your space marines? Ive been doing it on my army and it gives a wonderful illuminated effect

  • the best tutorial paiting of 40k figures......you must wacth this!!!!!!aWesOmE!!!!!

  • I keep saying it, but I guess now it will happen... Setting up permanent residence for my airbrush and compressor today.. Again.. excellent video and advise Les!

  • how do u make that base that u put your minature on

  • @hellomynameisplanb resin casting, I think there are a few good tutorial on youtube

  • do you water down your paint?

  • @RaNdOmMaN102197 says in the beginning all airbrush paint is 1:1 mix of paint and Windex. When I paint by hand it's a 1:1 mix with my Liquitex Flow-aid and distilled water.

  • @awesomepaintjob how do you get your distilled water and stuff? Also, why Windex?

  • @awesomepaintjob So would you use windex for GW paint too?

  • isn't buying an aerograph and paints for it a big waste of money ?

I mean when you use it aren't the paints finishing quickly ?

  • @voltrumiks no. you actually use less. I can base coat a marine with 3 drops of paint.

  • @awesomepaintjob How much is a drop? I saw the Iwata's cost like £70! Quite a lot.

    Great work btw.

  • What a great fast way to do the sword. Thanx again as always,

  • @SkartoothStudios - The primer has the 'tooth' for the other paint to grab onto... it makes the whole rest of the job a WHOLE lot easier. You could however add some color to your primer mix before applying, one of the nice things about using an airbrush. I only do it because it's tough to see, on a gray plastic mini, where your gray primer has or hasn't been applied yet.

  • Is there a way to rate other than 'thumb up' / 'thumb down'?

Anyway, another awesome tutorial man - thanks!!!!

I have a question; at one point I bought nearly the entire VMA metallic line, and perhaps I just had a bad batch(?) because nearly every color was soo separated, that even after ridiculous amounts of shaking, they still sprayed silver (with slightly different hues). Do you have any experience with this issue and perhaps a way to cure it? ...or is it just a bad batch?

    Thanks!

  • hey i have a quick question. when im watching your videos i notice your paint goes on nice and smooth. do you thin it with just water or do you use a product?

  • Hey man, I saw below that you were planning on doing IG in the future. I was wondering if you could try doing the camo scheme in the American ACU pattern, ya know, the bluey- grey one. Just a suggestion I think it would look pretty cool. Love the vids!!

  • i am luving taht sword so an airbrush is like a fine spray can?

  • hey man im switching from GW paint range to Vallejo, but which Vallejo is best Game colour or Model colour......

love the sword it better then awesome..

  • What are you using for tape? Not regular tape I'm assuming.

  • whats the consistency of your airbrush paint? just mixed the amount of paint you use to the same amount of thinner?

  • Wow, amazing work on the sword! That's a great idea! Masking + Airbrush should become a tool in any painter's toolbox!

  • why dont they come PRE COLOURED ?

  • I'm so going to test out the sword technique.....

    thanks for sharing, Les... =)

  • I. Love. You.

  • Havent been able to paint for a while but i was taking forever to do my minis.. These videos have set the spark to break out my minis and get to cranking again in half the time. Videos are awesome Les keep it up.

  • wow amazing paint job, got to try your way out.

  • Beautiful as always Les, Great job on the sword btw!!!

  • that sword is fantastic a simple but affective meathod got to get me an air brush

  • i think the wash diffused the highlights too much

  • Awesome :D

  • wow, that technique for the sword was probably the fastest and most effective way of doing a great looking blade, best tip by far

  • Thank you for taking the time to produce these tuts. You work on painting with an

airbrush at this scale is cutting edge. Yhe sword painting technique is one of the best I have ever seen on youtube. I can't wait to try this with several different colors.

    Thanks again.

  • Hey, can you tell me how in heck do u get so good surface airbrushing white? What preasure are you using? I know that you need to thin paint as a milk

  • Airbrushes are so expensive here, about $300 for Iwata HP-CS :( Tried out one of dad's old brushes but I guess the needle and nozzle are a bit small for the heavy acrylics.

  • @Makkeru you should really try tcp global. Their hp-cs is much cheaper than that

  • Hee man love the model and specially the sword cool done with the airbrush did it before ones and you are right the result you get with the airbrush is much better then the brushing result. i just wanted to ask you how long did it take you to paint the model in real time so without the timelapse? take care buddy keep up the great work!

  • Hi Les,

Great paint job. I love the power sword. From start to finish how long did it take for the airbrushing? I think this would really quicken up unit painting.

Although I love the sword i think it does distract my view of the rest of the model. But it's still awesome all the same.

    CF

  • your painting skills are great =D good job

  • once again, awesome paintjob!

    Great Job!

I've noticed you tend to use different airbrushes and after watching your videos I am looking into getting myself one but am curious what you tthink is the best, and also what typew of compressor you would suggest. As far a the airbruh is cconcerned the Paasch Talon looks pretty decent and within my price range, the infinity you used in some other vvideos seems excellent but a bit too pricey for me at this point.

    cheers,

  • @MrHashshashin Hey Les I just went to your website and saw the link in your tools section (that wasn't there a couple of days ago o.O )

So I'm assuming that this airbrush is your suggestion, but what type of compressor would you suggest? I've been looking at hardware stores for something like a little one gallon tank size, but maybe thats overkill?

    thanks again!

  • @MrHashshashin yeah the tools section was broke for a bit but I finallt found a way to get it working. Working of becoming an affiliate with TCP global for more airbrush tools for people. My compressor is a Paasche D500 with regulator and water trap. Not the most expensive but it's taken a beating and still going strong.

  • @awesomepaintjob I've had luck using a co2 tank for welding. It lasts forever, no moisture and no reaction to the paint. With the large capacity, it doesn't freeze (with an airbrush). And, with kids in the house, no compressor to wake them. :-) Not for everyone, but it works great for me.

  • Amazing I got to get a hold of a air brush kit...

  • @awesomepaintjob umm...what are you talking about?

  • @elementwaef sorry wrong person.. No tau or Eldar are in the future. Not until I hit the SM chapters that are part of the project. But after that I'm looking at Orkz and IG. But you never know.

  • for the power sword if you dont have an air brush would you just water down the paints so that they blend like that?

how would you paint an obsidian power sword? it would be for Azarel for my Dark Angels

  • must. get. spray gun

  • Why in each "tutorial" you use the GW names instead of the Vallejo names since those are the paints you are using?

  • @OverlordFxR Because it's something people are familiar with. If and when the community is more Vallejo Game Color users, I will stick the VGC names up. The format now keeps Citadel Paint users from having to look up conversions where most VGC users already know the equivalents.

  • Nice job! The gold turned out really well on this one. Thanks for also doing the skin on this one.

  • Could You PLEASE Do a Tau Tutorial PLEASE !!!!!!

  • What colors would you suggest for a similar effect on the sword, but green?

  • don you think maybe you could do a tau tutorial or eldar tutorial sometime?

  • this is really insightful. I;ve never seen airbrushing actually done and frankly i'm impressed the the results. I look foward to use this. Another impressive part you turned me on to was the model air paint. It has a great look and really simplifies the time and effort.

  • Cool Vid Les.

Iam looking into getting a Airbrush but have no idea were to start what sort of outlay for a set up including gun and compressor iam in the UK but i would imagine that you can get same airbrushes the world over oh and please no jokes about The USA holding England to a 1-1 draw lol

    Thanks

  • God damn Les, that sword is sexy as hell.

  • The 13th company does not exist! In the name of Logan Grimnar I will do battle for the honor of the Sons of Russ to silence such blasphemy!

  • wow that blade looks amazing....i might have to buy an airbrush now.

  • love the sword big style dude. How long did it take you to get good with your airbrush and how did you practice? Because like if you go to heavy on a model does it no kill all of the detail? keep up the nice work :)

  • Another great vid Les, thankyou! It's also great to see that you've moved away from all the blood angels and sub chapters I was dying to see you paint something other than red, :D Ill also have to look into some airbrushes as they seem pretty damn useful :P Thanks agen!

  • How long did it take you to get good with the airbrush? nd how did you practice cus if you airbrush a model badly doesn't it kill all of the details? Love the job keep it up :)

  • Thank you so much. This model looks really sweet. I need to get my hands on an airbrush so that I can kick my painting skill up a bit. You inspire!

  • Have you considering poking the model's sword through a plastic sandwich baggie as a quick mask?

  • Really sharp looking mini. The airbrush gives a great effect.

I wouldn't have made the teeth quite so white though, looks unnatural and sticks out too much. Especially since it's wolves..

I'm not a fan of the pink (red, I guess) hair either. Again, looks out of place. Need to use more of an earthy tone for hair.

Everything else looks great! Especially love the gold with whatever paint you used with the smaller flake and of course the sword.

  • @DKOK09 thanks for reporting back on your result. You don't know how easy it is until you do it.

  • looks peaty beautiful I do believe that the sword will draw a lot of attention to that model
