For the benefit of the uninitiated, this is a "rocked-up" version of the old folk song "Early one morning". It was commonplace particularly in the 60s to record versions of tunes that are in the public domain thereby avoiding having to pay royalties to the composer. Record producer Joe Meek is a good example of this and his catalogue is littered with examples. e.g. "Greensleeves" became "Green Jeans", "Phil the Fluters Ball became "PFB" and "Camptown Races became "Do dah day".
This sounds just like the song from Pollyanna! It was when the orphan Pollyanna and Nancy, her auntie's maid, were walking down the street together carrying the basket of goods and singing in staggeringly high-pitched voices like hungry kittens! It was the 1960 version featuring Hayley Mills.
I've got a Tornados EP with an exact same photo on the cover as this one. How cheapskate can you get, Decca. Good track though and nice to be able to hear it.
exactly what genre would you call this? im trying to explain this kind of music to a friend and the only way to describe it that i can think of is 50s/60s surfer music.
@Icecreamsocialist1 The best way to describe this is something that was considered uber hip at the time and has lasted so long the kitsch factor has saved it from utter obscurity. Back in the day, movie producers would hear something like this, be told kids liked it, and wind up putting it as the soundtrack to the scene in the The Blob where people run screaming from the theater. Does that help?
Blackpool Rock was the B side of the single "Exodus", released in August 1964. It is now available on the double CD "The complete Tornados" from Amazaon
@Telstar10000 - AH! I have Exodus on a vinyl, Greatest Hits album, but Blackpool Rock was not included. The Tornados book is fairly SMALL. I prefer their '62-3 stuff, as produced by Mr Meek. I have pretty much all of that and one day will probably fill in the GAPS on YouTube. The Ice Cream Man, Life On Venus, Globetrotter, Blue, Blue, Blue Beat - some really great tracks. At the moment, I'm doing my VTs, but when it comes the turn of my 45s...
This is great. My new favorite tornados tune

Once was at the Holloway studio to hear Mike Berry's 'Tribute' song for Holly, circa 1960. Anyone else recall this?

How could you use a poor maiden so? ...LOL how did they get away with calling this 'bllackpool rock' and probably claiming royalties for it?
