The modern Lionel CW-80 transformer is notorious for causing problems with the PS1 electronics in the older MTH locomotives as it doesn't put out a pure sine wave AC voltage. I use classic ZW transformers from the 50's and have no problems.
Hi. I have the EXACT same engine...my problem is, it does not move. It will light up and the sounds somewhat work...i bought it used a train show in Council Bluffs. It is running a PS1 system i believe. I am using FastTrack and a 18V (80 Watt) Linonel transformer... PLEASE HELP. :)
If it was sitting in a display case for 10 years, how could it run? If you let the Proto1 engines sit for too long, the battery will scramble the chip. It happened to all my PS1 engines.

As long as the original NiCad batteries were replaced by NiMH batteries, there is no such problem.
