I'm not sure is entire OS loaded into ram, but as we know ram is by orders of magnitude faster than hd, and non-persistent live usb ubuntu runs pretty well.
The problem appears with persistent live sticks (those which memorize changes) and usb write speed.
So i expect usb3 sticks to run live ubuntu noticeable faster than usb2 ones, in persistent mode.
Does the USB drive need to be blank for this? A friend of mine has a 16 GB size USB (or so he believes) and he has files stored on it. Would that create a problem?
First, create a folder on the USB drive, and name it "AllThatWasHereBefore[date] ..
2.
Shift all files and folders (in other words, everything) hanging off the "root" of the USB drive into the just created "AllThatWasHereBefore[date]" folder.
3.
Proceed from there as if it was a blank USB drive.
*To be extra safe, your friend can back up all he has on his 16GB USB drive onto a hard drive in case he loses everything on his USB drive.
I used Fedora Live USB Creator and it does the same thing as UneBootie. After getting it on to my USB and switching my BIOs, it still doesn't work. And I already formatted my USB to FAT32. What do you think is wrong?
@MysticWaterNite not sure if it is the samething as unetbootin, but after i format, i do a safe unmount of the usb, then plug it back in, then continue and it works
@gotbletu I tried it with Ubuntu three times; once with UNetBootin, once with PenDrive, once with the CD which booted Linux and I made the usb from there. All three times it didn't work like I tried with Fedora. I get this message saying there's no configuration file in the "syslinux" folder and it can't boot. Do you think it's because of my computer or USB? I heard that some expensive USBs won't let you run Linux from it. I've also heard that some computers can't boot from a USB too Please Help
@MysticWaterNite make sure u set ur bios to boot from usb, of press the hotkey at bootup for menu, think is either F12 or delete key. If u got a very old pc then it might not have usb boot option. Some old computers cant handle the newer usb stick either
@gotbletu Yes, I already did that as I've explained earlier. I went into BIOs at start up and went to the Boot Options and changed it to my USB and disabled everything else. When I boot my CD I have to do the same thing but for my CD drive. But I just keep on getting this error message saying I don't have configuration files. What are those? It said it's suppose to be in the syslinux folder.
USB flash drives is NOT an option when doing security related work like reformating. they have an extremley low life span compared to any other storage media
Or, if you have a 4gb+ drive hit ' Try Ubuntu', open the disk utility at System>Administration, note the letters (sdc, etc) of your USB, hit install, on step 4 select the same letters of your USB on erase disc and etc, then at step 7, click advanced and check install bootlpader, but then also select your USB drive letters
It's also available for Microsoft systems, in fact the USB installation feature of Windows 7 is unetbootin. Microsoft was forced to publish the code under GPL because at first they didn't want to admit they stole it. Just Google: 'unetbootin for windows'
I'm not sure about what you're doing, but if you just format the disk with PartitionMagic linux (if you're formatting an HD, I'm not sure why you would), you can just change the format type in the options.
Hey mate, nice background (Nice video to, but its something i already knew>.>) think you cans end me the link to get it, or if thats one of your own put it up on the net?
i just got a 16gb exigo flash drive could you tell me how to get it to work with my ps3, i have a few other usb drives and they work fine i just dont know how to get this to work with the playstation.
well, i did exactly what you did here, but when i boot it says "failed to connect" or something like that, and then says "check your cable", and i thought that was kind of funny b/ i don't know what cable they are talking about if it's just a regular 1g usb
u have to make sure that ur computer has usb boot options and if u do enable that in ur Bios. As for the disc it should boot up, unless u have disc errors from burning? or damage iso? Otherwise try on another machine to c if the disc works.
yeah thanks, i ended up getting ubuntu installed onto my external hardrive xD
one problem though, i have a...nvidia e-GeForce FX 5200...i think and it will not let me activate the visual effects, comes up saying i can't. What am i doing wrong? do i need a knew driver and if so where can i get one? thankss :P
hmmm, i dont think its shitty because it runs games and stuff on windows perfectly but it does say on the box that it was designed for windows xp...ima get a new one...maybe part of the problem also is that since i have it installed on my external hardrive....idk would that be a problem?
u mainly running off the ram when u use this livecd/usb thing. So if u reboot and take off ur usb stick is gone. Is kinnda like a try it b4 u really install it. I havent try puppy linux compiz but yes ive seen people do it. just make sure ur card can handle compiz thats all.

Well with 128mb of ram then yes puppy is great for all that u mention. On laptops if u need wifi that might be a problem. Other than that if u dont need wifi or u get wifi to work then everything is good. If u want a pretty puppy linux distro, u might want to check out "macpup"
-well i finally did it man, and let me tell you, it's great ;).. it's running like a knife through butter. a good thing is she has 256 mb, and even the wifi, and configuration only took like 2 minutes.. i removed windows, and partioned from the usb, and installed puppy on the HDD ;) ..one thing was just with this stupid hotmail, and configurations for pop3 servers.. when i access via seamonkey an error appears, like "change your browser" stuff.. though pidgin is making it's work on messenger ;)
yea puppy linux is the fastest i've seen. Good that u got wifi working haha. Next step get rid of hotmail bill gates bullshit, and get gmail or someshit better.
-right!, now i just have to convince her to get a gmail.. one thing else is that i couldn't place an icon on the desktop for firefox, it seems all the turorials are for puppy 2 versions, maybe 3 and i installed the latest, puppy linux 4 and it was released during last month, so couldn't understand cuz the directories are not the same.. all i could place was a tiny icon i found in some dir.. whatever, you really helped me here man, keep it up, thanks ;)
oh no probs, hope u get extra laid from ur girl for all the work loL. As for convincing her, I just say sorry I dont date girls that uses hotmail, I only like girls that got nice gmail haha
-then i tried to use a manual installation on the flash drive, moving data from live cd to my formatted in fat32 flashdrive, download syslinux, moved some files from casper folder(vmlinuz and initdr), editing syslinux.. nothing.
-i tried "vga mode" with the uneedbooty' stuff (lol) and detects no screen.. i dunno' what else to try :S ..maybe another distro?
-i donwloaded that stuff, and i tried to put it on my girlfriend's laptop, (a dell inspiron 7800, damaged cd drive) but it doesn't start, i boot from usb and it also shows the login screen (after, like 10 minutes, i even hear the login sound) but stays frozen, i even let it like for 3 hours yesterday watching a movie, and nothing.i used feisty-fawn because i have the live-cd. the day i let for 3 hours an error appeared "gnome encountered error themes may not work" something like that.. ne help?
I was going to do this but it turns out that i dont have enough ram on my computer. After all its just a littlle acer aspire one netbook.

If it is recognised as a Winrar file; this means it is compressed. You should extract the contents of the compressed file.

also does compiz fusion work with puppy linux?
