I think the SUSE looks great! -but I think I'm going to switch to Debian (from Ubuntu)- So many good distros...hard to choose...and it's all FREeeeee....yee-haw!
How can you say that this OS looks great? It's years behind modern OS when it comes to looks. It might be safe, offer freedom and all of that, but it's ugly. If you want the masses to switch to Linux then you gotta do something about the looks. Most people don't give a damn about nerdy issues, they just want to surf, send e-mails, chat, play music etc and they go for looks.
@whj28ahg i dont know about opensuse (and other distros) since i've only used ubuntu thus far, and yes, the default themes on these os' are pretty bad. (ubuntu's 10.04 default is pretty good, previously ubuntu's default was the worst). However, customizing the theme makes for so many different possibilities. Then there is other programs like cairo-dock, compiz, ect that are truly eye candy.

did you just drag and drop the iso image? or did you use an iso burner. if so then just press f9 or something along those lines when your computer is booting up. the choose the disk.
openSUSE 11.1 should detect all your hardware on startup. If it doesn't then look for a one-click install package to obtain any outstanding drivers. Try a Google search.
Wireless NICs are one area where Linux doesn't have great support. Try and find the manufacturer of your NIC and do a search in Yast2 for an appropriate driver.
I recently installed Open Suse 11.1, but I'm having problems get the nic-card to talk, I.e. I'm having issues connecting to the internet. Anyone outher having similar problems. What do I need to do to get it to work? Thanks
A first clue is this: The slot immediately after the AGP or the PCI-E must lie empty. That's because there will be an IRQ sharing which cause problems. A second point is not to have 2 NICs in the PC or 1 NIC+an ISDN card or 1 NIC + a PCI modem. Also, if the mobo has it's own NIC and you added an other NIC in the PCI, then just cancel the mobo's NIC through the BIOS, so you will have only the PCI one. There could be problems on WinXP too, but not all the time.
Isn't it a wonderful Linux edition? The 11.1 surprised me a lot because it's much improved than the previous edition 10.0. Everything looks and works fine in my PC. I choosed the KDE 3, although it has KDE 4 also.
i am currently trying to weigh up whether to switch to Fedora or OpenSUSE, having used Linux for years and just switching back again from XP. Good KDE 4 support is key for me, as I am not the biggest Gnome fan!

thanks for review... im moving away from ubuntu (which i hate now because of it's lousey hardware support)... almost finished downloading opensuse so i'm really looking forward to the polished graphics - just hope the hardware support is as good as the os looks!!!
At OpenSUSE's own website, in some videos, they say something like "Sue-Ze" or "Sue-Sei". Pronounce it however the hell you like :p I say it like Open Zeus.
HAHA! Yea I was thinking the same thing. When I was watching him talk, I wasn't even paying any attention to what he was saying, I was just looking at that big ass mic
I downloaded it but my secondary har drive has stayed with Ubuntu 8.04 because it's been stable and good. I'm an OpenSuse fan but the only problem I had was that the dvd codex didn't when I installed it through yast. There was a website that had another way of installing it that I always used but it was sold and they no longer have that guide. I had to pretty much build my pc from ground up and only had one drive in it so I could not use Linux for some time and forgot how to do it. =/
dvd codex: there is something weird about openSuse and copyright laws, they are not allowed to provide dvd decoders and mp3 codecs out of the box and all that junk, you need to add the "packman" repository and update the xine package and all plugins associated with it. then everything will work
I got the MP3, WMA and everything working on Suse.... except the DVDs. I just prefer DVD CSS over the other alternative they offered. That one... simply worked!
I've always pronounced it one syllable, "soose", but I think I remember ready a magazine article that said the name actually was Su SE or Su Second Edition. So they would call it Su (Es EE).
I believe your pronunciation of SuSE is in the right ball park, on the wrong base. the S (both of them) is pronounced as a Z since it's a German acronym.
I recently downloaded OpenSUSE 3 days ago, not knowing of its release, just wanting an alternative to Ubuntu. It's great. This distro my become the one i settle down with and make a family of programs on... but I am having an issue, maybe you can help. The WIFI is acting oddly. It works when I put in the LiveCD and first start, but every start up thereafter, WIFI doesn't work. I can see everything but no connections work. Thinking it was an update issue I reinstalled twice. Same deal. Help?
I like OpenSuSe 11.1 KDE a lot, though the desktop animations are very choppy on my computer and there's no GUI way to set the right resolution (on my monitor at least). May be because it's no official release yet. Other than that it's perhaps the best desktop linux distribution right now since pretty much everything works right out of the box..
I believe openSUSE 11.1 will be a great release. However I intend to wait for KDE 4.2.0 to be ready before installing it (hopefully stephan binner will release a remastered version of oS 11.1 with it)
Cool. To me, openSuSE seems the most polished out of the big distros out there. The desktop experience seems fantastic (I gotta try this once i get an x86 computer... Linux doesn't like my iMac G5).
I loved this preview, although I'm a bit dissapointed that not more of KDE 4 was presented. As far as I see a lot more interesting developments are happenng in KDE 4 than in any other desktop at this moment. So it would be cool to see a review of these features. Maybe you plan a special review when KDE 4.2 comes out? Or maybe a pre-view of the current beta?
KDE4.1 is solid in this release. Light years ahead of Kubuntu. EXCEPT the NetworkManager applet. Good lord, that is trash.
Also, for what it's worth, the fingerprint reader in my ThinkPad has been supported by openSUSE out of the box since 10.3. Just figured I'd throw that out there.
Oops. Went back and rewatched this video, then I remembered something: OpenSUSE has supported fingerprint readers since at least 10.3, but with that release (and 11.0), it would only "just work" in tty1-tty6. It could be made to work with GDM, KDM, or what have you, but it took some patching and command-line hackery.
you cant download shit so dont get opensuse ever!!! id rather not have a laptop and ive seen pcs from 1970 with a better operating fkin system!

I think it's pronounced Soo-Zuh...
But I'm not sure!

the music volume somewhat higher than the volume when you're speaking.
but nice vid, I'm considering using openSUSE.

Any possibility to get less obtrusive microphone?

BTW, Chris: you can still buy the boxed edition. I believe the plan is to have pre-orders up at Novell's store within the next few days.

Nice pre-view ;)

KDE4.1 is solid in this release. Light years ahead of Kubuntu. EXCEPT the NetworkManager applet. Good lord, that is trash.
Also, for what it's worth, the fingerprint reader in my ThinkPad has been supported by openSUSE out of the box since 10.3. Just figured I'd throw that out there.
notanavrageloser 3 years ago 4
Ya, I thought that might be the case... They listed it as a new feature, but I suspected.
jupiterbroadcasting 3 years ago
So, realizing this, good job, OpenSUSE devs!
