Mike had so many colors to his voice, he could do the standard polished Dupree sound but when he wanted he could make his voice sort of cry as he does on this song and even have a bit of street corner vibrato if needed.
Joey sung this song, I don't know how Mike recorded it but I know that Joey did it first. I sure wish I could find the one that Joey sang, it would mean a lot to me if I could find it. I snuck in the Bay Lounge to see him perform in 1964 (all of 14 years old), and he sung that song and it was magic!
@EHDROCK Well it was a Joni James song and as Dupree lore has it Joey's sister was a fan of hers , and since they all sang together at different times and hung out in John Savaltos basement it is quite possible, though I have heard The Coed demos of Mike singing My Own True Love with a falsetto beginning which is how they did it before Coed put them with that big band leader, I know Mike did have a contract which would not allow him do sing for Coed records at the time so Joey stepped in.
Great original version. All in all,I happen to like the Bon-aires version better, but Kelly`s lead is superior and the Duprees ending is more satisfying. Both versions could have been top-10 hits with better marketing!
Mike Kelly will be interviewed on Ken Held's Doo Wop Shop this Sunday Jan. 3rd,2010 - 4-8PM on 1040 AM WLVJ. The show originates from Florida and can be accessed thru your computer by following the prompts. Ken will be playing previously unreleased old and new music by Mike-the ORIGINAL lead singer of the Duprees-the voice on the demos that got the Duprees the record deal with COED records. Don't miss it.
I just never, ever tire of this vocal masterpiece from Mike, Joe, John, & Mike A, " Smokey". This is singing as good as it can be done--by anyone, at any time, anywhere; Timeless, & Forever. Wolfsky9
Next to " Have You Heard", this is my all-time favorite by The Fabulous Duprees! Listen closely: they never, ever, sounded better than they did on this classic remake of Joni James 50's hit. Mike, your voice will live on forever. GBY to you, & the Original Duprees!! Wolfsky9
I really don't care who was or who was not their first a lead singer, Joey or Mike , both have great voices suited to this music, My comment a lovely song with the original lead might piss some off such as Doowopper51, well it does not matter to me who was first the spirit of the comment was and is , these are at least the Duprees who sang on all those records , Mike on latter ones as opposed to the group singing as The Duprees now.
It appears that Mike Kelly and John Salvato of the "Original" Duprees are winning the fight to reclaim the right to perform as the Duprees...Mike Kelly has a great Facebook Page...Search Mike Kelly/Duprees and you should get there. Request to be a friend and give them your support...You'll be kept up to date as to when their legendary sound will be heard one more...Vito O
I't s great to hear Mike Singing . I'm looking forward to hearing and seeing him perform again. Theres no one else like him! I can't wait. GOOD LUCK MIKE!!
This is, in my humble opinion, Mike Kelly's finest vocal, & The Duprees at their very best, in the late 60's, early 70's. Just a gorgeous vocal & arrangement. Thank-you Mike, Joe, John & Mike A. Wolfsky9
Looks like the original lead singer Mike Kelly may end up with the Duprees name after all. I just heard that the court denied the current group's attempt to dismiss original lead singer Mike Kelly's case.
Lots of people agree with you - they love Sky's The Limit -- I haven't warmed up to it completely.... I think I'll go listen to it now and try to analyze why. lol
Columbia Records had no clue what to do with this group
and they never had success after Chubby Vann till they hooked up with Jerry Ross but the greatest Mike Kelly lead is "The Sky's the Limit" on Heritage and also on Colossus label. This cut still stands the test of time-great vocals-great hook and the Coed horns!A Mike Kelly Favorite-just ask him!
never heard his version of Exodus. Where does one find it? He needs to re-release his old music. :) I love 'Let Them Talk' - an real oldie.. with doo wop overtones (or undertones).
Do you sir know how I can get in touch with Mike Kelly? Email or anything, I am such a big fan of the Duprees I wanted to possibly hire him for a private party! for my father surprise 67th he loves them now and when he was growing up!
Are you the creator of the Duprees (dot com) website? I really think its a very nice website, and I wonder if you would go back and update it ...someday...soon? With all the changes the Duprees are going through, have gone through, would love to see some new stuff. How about current pics of the guys who are still with us? thanks.
My veryfavorite Mike Kelly lead. I've said thisbefore, & I say it here: this was the very best era of The Duprees. Joey V. & Richie R. are wonderful in their own right, but--taken as a whole--musically--this era--" The Heritage Years" has The Duprees at their very best vocally, hands-down. Mike's voice was just awesome. Wolfsky9
someone I know, who knew Kelly back in "the day", once gave this description of him
"its wasn't so much his incredible one of a kind voices, but his personality as well... he smiled at you... and glowed with the 'bird that ate the canary' kind of look. very flirty...full of the dickens!
Joey Vann was original lead singer. Mike replaced him.

My love, my love
As long as I shall live
You'll always be my love
SHE'LL ALWAYS BE...MY LOVE...ALWAYS
