this is one of the times i hate bein a girl because then i cant play the crazy nazi guy who lives on a roof for my school remake of the producers. lolXD
Seeing as the screenplay was written for Broadway in the first place, I was all for the theatrical remake. The only thing that really bothered me was Matthew Broderick, who took nearly all of the humor out of the character with his awkward performance.
I liked the remake a little more than the original. I just love the music so much. Like the touchy songs like till him have a good hook to it. Will ferrel was good. Everyonr has an opinion
@Via1tunes -- Only thing I liked about the remake was the end w/ Bialystock, Bloom and Leibkind being pardoned for their great " prison inmate rehabilitation project" (Prisoners of Love) and going on to great Broadway success. Otherwise, it was a pale imitation of the original. Nathan Lane was no Zero Mostel. That Ferris Bueller kid was no Gene Wilder. Will Ferrell lacked the humor of Kenneth Mars. And the Lorenxo St. Dobois character was dropped?!?!? Horrible! Lame!

@Via1tunes Will Ferrel hammed it up to much I admit. But I liked Nathan Lane better than Zero Mostel IN THIS MOVIE. Same with matthew. Everything else was not as good.
@vigo894 That's so interesting. I've often seen him play roles with a foreign accent (like Otto in "Malcolm in the Middle"), so I'm not used to hearing him speak fluent english.
Kenneth Mars was the PERFECT Franz! Sadly If Hitler had been more like the one Franz described, the Snappy dresser, Terrific Dancer, great painter & of course, better looking than Churchill, Germany would have been a nicer place. The Darker things Franz DIDNT see or remember was why it fell apart.....
Franz Shock & disbeleif of these things meant that he would rather rationalize that darker side as lies told by the allies than accept the truth about the leader he idolized ...
very funny underated actor--did heaps of good lines-and stuff-remember him in a small bit on get smart--in the TBO-WAS EXCELLENT in the classic original producers..this is critical gentlemen-i dont know if this is the short fuse or the long-ah ha,you see how smart the germans are--i said this is the short fuse-and it is the short fuse--the short fuse--BOOM-VERY FUNNY SCENE
I love this film. Everything about it. And Kenneth Mars is one of the important links to everything ironic about the story. R.I.P.(And Zero...you'll never be forgotten).
No one can improve upon perfection. This film was just unbelievable. Kenneth Mars was a natural comedian in everything that he was in, even" Malcolm In The Middle". Comedians today pale into insignificance. R.I.P. Mr. Mars.
A great scene . . . but the "Springtime for Hitler" number is my favorite. "Don't be schtoopid! Be a shmarty! Come and join the Nazi pahty." (delivered in the movie and play by Brooks himself)
Will Ferrell is so desperate for people to love him that his performance comes off like high school acting. Kenneth Mars understands that this guy is a racist, anti-Semetic lunatic, and makes no bones about it. It's one of the funniest performances in the history of cinema.
@TulseLuper Hey, it could have been worse, they could have gone with Mike Myers....and Uma Thurman? She would have been better cast as one of Bialystok's ladies
@Porsiba I have. He was alright in Anchorman, and he was incredibly annoying in Step Brothers (as he usually is). John C. Reilly had his moments but that's it.
@TulseLuper i disagree. i laughed the first time i saw this scene in the 2005 version. when i saw this it was kind of "eh". i thought ferrell's delivery was much better. plus, the 2005 version was an actual musical, so everything is big and, at times, over done. thats probably why you thought his performance came off that way.
@TulseLuper Be real you just don't like remakes so you automatically say his performance is bullshit compared to the originators which is complete and utter bullshit
@DjChugalug239 Actually, I do like some remakes: The Fly, Ocean's 11, True Grit, Nosferatu, Bad Lieutenant, 3:10 to Yuma, The Man Who Knew Too Much, The Departed, I could go on. Also, how is Will Ferrell any less over-the-top than Kenneth Mars? Whatever, you're clearly 15, you'll learn about logic and reason when you're older.
@TulseLuper Don't go basing your arguement off age, i grew up with this version so obviously ima support this & im not taking anything away from the original mainly bcuzz to me their very unique in there own ways.. and whos to say Will Farrell did'nt play the role with same mind set as Kenneth Mars just with his own unique twist. Of course thats what he wants to do to bring a little of himself onto the screen because after all it it a REMAKE and nobody wants to play it out just like the original
@TheCatgirl6 Yep - Mel Brooks wanted to play Franz Liebkind...until Ken Mars read for the role...and Brooks realized he was funnier...and he improvised the line about Hitler painting an entire room in 2 coats...
agreed. probably the funniest scene in the entire film. Hysterical. The current politcial correctness brigadeers probably would not think the film would be funny, but this film is a downright classic.
Absolutely hilarious - one of my all-time favorite films - I saw it in the theaters when it first came out and watch it every time I see it playing on the idiot box.
