  • Any one know where I can get this movie??!! Btw AJ's cute... I'm not usually attracted to men of my own race until I find out they are like me, afro punk. Then all of a sudden they're gorgeous. But then again, he really is! ^_^

  • @anbmjj You know he is an actor and this film is not a documentary?

  • OMG moldy peaches are in this? COINCIDENCE, that I am playing a moldy peaches song right now?

  • "black people worry about being black too much."

So true. we need to get over our skin color and be true to ourselves as people. harder said than done, though. In America, it's hard to forget that you're black and that you are a problem because of it.

  • Weird.

My name's AJ, and I actually straighten my hair, and hang out with mostly whites.

    Except I'm Indian, not black.

Then I heard about this movie and was like, WOAH. Minus the alcohol, partying, and overall badassery, THAT'S ME.

  • Wow who knew i spent alot of my teens and 20's in LA was 1 of maybe a hand full that was in to punk and im talkin when it first hit LA early 80's i rember when the Go Go's were punk as a mater of fact i seen there 1st show @ the whiskey seen groups like Fear Black Flag X circle jerks an it was never about color or race just the MUSIC glad to see its kept alive with group like Afro-punk suport the music black folk forget the stereotypes!

  • does anyone know the song playing at like 1:17. it sucks having one bit of a song stuck in your head. lol

  • triangle circle square -Test icicles

  • thx man. much appreciated.

  • no probb

  • "Look at you. All of sudden, you're all Black and shit." Classic!! I love it. You know, this could be about anywhere a Black person has had to "fit in" that was mostly White. So many of us have had to deal with being of African descent around a lot of White folks based on how THEY want us to deal with it. James, thank you for your sense of reflection. Thank you for your true love of self.

  • That's right! We (Black rockers) should just stick to Afros and dreadlocks! Be proud, be Black, be rock, and don't change for NOBODY!!!

  • well dude, im all for being ourselves as african americans who dig rock, but that doesnt mean we should confined to one kind of hair style. that sounds too much like trying to create a uniform to how we look. ive been straightening my hair for years and i dont feel like any im less of rock fan. i just like it and it fits my style, regardless of what anyone says. if you dig afros, go for it, if you dont, find something you do. genuine people arent gauged by their hair style dude.

  • this film is like a piece of my life - I stopped going to concert because of shit like this! If you look at the history of rock there should be more blacks than whites there anyway but because the music was stolen I can get no relief for ignorant white kids who feel I shoudnt be there.

  • where can i find this movie, jspooner? Seems like a great one.

  • go to afro punk thts wharw the trailer is

but i think they have a website

  • K i must say though....i have black friends who are into metal and punk and what not and we know that they are black and their heritage is seperate from ours and we acknowledge that...when it comes down too it we are the same all of us dont care about race we look at people as an individual.

  • good stuff and great message.

  • Black people have been suffering from an identity crisis for a long while now. It's time to define who you are as an individual. That is when and only when each and everyone will be able to embrace the Black experience for the postive, plus white people need to admit that they share in the experience.

Without the black experience there wouldn't be an America. America's origins are also rooted in Africa. I think most of us have forgotten that fact. So stop crying. We are all Americans.

  • Oh hey, it's a white guy commenting!

  • i actually agree.

  • HAHAHAHA!! "Look at you. All of a sudden you're all black and shit!" BWHAAHAHAHA!

Looks like a great film, as expected from Spooner! I'm behind, I've only seen like one or two of his films. :(

  • I like this music and I know malcolm, martin, etc. I am blacker than most of you talkin shyt on your best day, so shut di fuk up already. YOU same ones don't even vote, you don't read, you are not there when shyt goes down in the hood, you just pop off ya big fukin mouths. All talk, no action.

  • For the record, it's difficult for African Americans to assimilate into mainstream white society. If we adhere to our cultural norms, we are treated like ignorant thugs. If we attempt seemingly white social norms, our own people will view us as traitors. White people will look upon us as if we do not belong. So don't give me your crap about "African Americans" and their "low self-esteem." Walk the mile in our shoes and take your head out of your own ass.

  • in my consern , i beleve the your sprem is the same white as a white or asian , or latino so you have a brain , and hand to be more and represent better your ppl , open your eye and see your neiogborhood and ask yourself who have the fault of this, is not the white man , is the media , and the eternal hate in history , there is not traitor when you have to learn from your enemy and learn from him.... because you will be shock how similar you can be to him...

  • Don't tell us that. African Americans have been trying to just get along. We've tried being ourselves and doing as whites do. Neither is good enough. It is a historical and constant truth. That's the point of this or Afro-Punk. It shows our willingness to assimilate, being met full and passive aggression. Unless you're African American, you will never understand. I can respect that your opinion differs, but it won't ever matter until you share the same experince.

  • read what you just said and tell me there is not victisism in that,, you trying to be yourself first ask who are you ? and what you can do, not going in this pop fashion culture fashion crap, this is 21 century ppl cant keep thinking like that is what all the white powerfull ppl want keep remind you the you come from slavery, that is just the motor to show what you can be capable for good.

  • It is not victimism. It is the reality of the matter. The fact is, that African Americans are still oppressed. It does not mean that we are incapable of succeeding. We have made great strides, but to believe that we are on even ground, will only make us complacent, when a war is still being fought. So make no mistake with my words. We are opressed as warriors battling back. Not as sheep to the slaughter.

  • Why do we have to cross over to you? I prefer to be myself and I love myself for it - I have dark skin and nappy hair - im not going to get a perm so white ppl can feel better - fuck you!

  • this is so shit.

  • this is a crapppy film honestly so stupid this , i hate the way african american think they think they are the only one who suffer slavery and lack of identiti , if they go to brazil or cuba or talk whit some afro caribean they dont give a shit about thinks like this.

  • Hmmm...well considering that Afro-Brazilians and Afro-Cubans share the same descendents taht African Americans share, your entire assertion is absolutely, 100% idiotic. Read a history book some time.

  • yes the only thing we dont give a shit about race identity , just african american have so low self value from them self . im sorry for african amrican for real. and this guy james spooner is the worst because he train to use the pop culture make money from ppl like you stupid ass.

  • My mother still remembers segregation. She remembers the day Martin Luther King Jr. died. We are now dealing with Hurricane Katrina, Jena Six, West Virginia Six and a slew of other noose/racist related incidents. Swear words won't elevate the merit of your poorly conceived argument. African descendents in America are still suffering. Just because the others in our diaspora have decided to ignore their racial hardship, doesn't mean that all of us must follow suit.

  • still sufering because they want it they are many many african americans who stand up from the most hard situation and they never play the victim , is a fact the some white ppl have racial problem but the worst is the same thing whit african american , the problem in U.S is political . it been always like that , also blame the actitud of and the bad publicity of hip hop artist... just open your eye and see what your own ppl do to themself....

  • and 2nd afro latinos we have more identity and self pride we are more atached to what our ansestor let us we have , the msusc , the mix religion , the budu , the candomble , the palo music we share more african pride them african american , they just play the victim always like jewis is a shame ..

  • OH STFU rog09 god damn you fucking idiot.

  • @rog809 this is not Brazil or Cuba first! we have suffered in America for hundreds of years and continue to suffer now.I understand the hardships of afro people around tje globe, but please do not put a stamp on who suffers the most. We as African decent suffer around the globe and it doesn't matter whether you choose to acknowledge racism or not it's still alive and well.

  • this looks like it is going to be really good. i hope this film gets mass distribution.

  • im mixed race and i still get looks

i agree with this film and afropunk

really hit home i can totally relate

asdfghjkl i gotta see this film.

  • FUCK SKIN COLOR, PEOPLE ARE SO STUPID.

  • I wanna bloody see this film sooo bad. =] x

  • This is like the story of my FUCKIN! life...lol! ... I must see this film. Were can I get it in England???

  • this is stupide doesnt making anysense

  • Feeling like the only one of your kind to like indie or punk is the worst feeling in the world. I've been there as a Latino, not from Mexico. Thank you Spooner for telling this story. Rock is definitely not a "white-only" or an "English-only" genre.

  • yup. same here. id see more bengalis and desis on the london scene but new york is just...having the boxes under ethnicity and alwas having to tick on "other" because youre not even an acknowledged minority per se in the u.s. the scene gets depressing sometimes but i dont get jaded easily :)

  • I would question where the roots of rock grew up from - history is very important!

  • this looks kinda good. man i live this every day. interesting to see stuff like this brought to light

  • really

  • havent seen your afro punk film yet but both look great! are they avalible in England?

  • exactly its been out a while i really have got to see this and afropunk
