By far, the scariest Disney villain. This movie had some crazy scenes in it. Because this movie was much more "adult" in nature and the more tantasy / horror edge to it...it nearly put Disney's animation department out of business. In fact, they wouldn't produce another animated feature for four years.
Wow, this was something else :D. How come I've missed this? Really something I enjoyed. Would've scared the hell out of me back when I was a child-it scared me just alittle right now XD. Only alittle though ;).
for a villain as scary looking as he is , he did nothing in the film really which is why i dont regard the horned king as one of the best disney villains
if disney didn't cop out in the first place , made it a 12 or 15 and included all the so called controversial scenes it would have actually made good box-office sales
So the Horned King, Chernabog (black demon from fantasia), and Master Xehanort (Kingdom Hearts, Main Villain behind the whole series) Get into a fight over who is most evil.
I love the animation in this film. while almost every other disney film is clean and stylized, this movie breaks the combo and presents the gritty, sketchy side of the classic disney animation team.
@6383Jman: I can't agree that it's a crappy movie, although I only saw this part just today, I doubt it's a crappy movie. After what I saw in this video, the King(the Horned King that is) is one of my favorite disney villains(bc he is so evil) :). Indeed, he's a gr8 villain and I suspected it was John Hurt's voice, I remembered it from the cartoon Lord of the Rings movie and from all his other movies :).
@Khornedevotee It's not horrible, but it's not exactly great either. The imagery is pretty good and there are some pretty great scenes and such, but by and large it's kinda underwhelming.
This is like LOTR for children, I remember this freaking me out so bad but at the same time I was mesmorized! Does the Horned King remind anyone of Lord Sauron embodied?
I love this villan, he is the only villian who pretty much has an undead army and is freaking scary and ruthless. This movie freaked me the fuck out when i was a kid!!!!
OMG i remember watchong this film when i was 4 8D....Scared the hell out of me completely but this film my god shows us what disney used tobe before it was domesticated and put in a pretty pink frock
I remember reading the Prydain and Narnia series growing up. Great stuff! Why didn't Disney ever expand on the series and make more films to chronicle the rest of the stories? I think that Taran and Link from the Legend of Zelda series were probably my biggest heroic influences growing up, and it's something that kids today are sadly missing out on.
@maliwahtallhei: Wouldn't surprise me XD. Both are ruthless, their evil are about equal level and they both possess dark characteristics and charisma. ;D
Short question: Is the version Disney puts out nowadays a cut down version? Whenever I see 'The Black Cauldron' I think there are some scenes missing that freaked me out when I saw it in the cinema as a kid.
The sad thing is that Michael Eisner (the CEO of Disney at the time) hated it. And focused on cutting a number of scenes of the film out (In particular the Cauldron Born army, and the transition of them from being human to skeletal warriors). Also because Disney considered this film as an absolute failure is probably why they didn't want to even think about it in Kingdom Hearts... which is a shame because fighting the horned King would have been AWESOME.
I love when the Horned King says "So it does exist!!!" Yeah if he was searching for it only to find out that it didn't exist, he would have been fucking screwed!!!!
at 2:55, that part REALLY terrified me! The Horned King frightened me REAL good and I'm still afraid of him! The way his voice sounded is SO haunting and ominous that it made and still makes me feel like I'm going to fade away!
I love how I watched this, among other movies, as a child, and they were so grim I never actually realized they were Disney movies until recently. I mean really, without Kingdom Hearts to tie them in, I probably wouldn't have known that movies like Beauty and the Beast and Sleeping Beauty were Disney movies. Heck, I only realized that The Hunchback of Notre Dame was a Disney movie when I saw the trailer for KH3D.
This dude is fucking dark, mate. I saw this as a kid but only now see the contrast between this guy and other Disney Villains, I mean, at least the other ones are more mainstream cartoonish. This Horned King however, could have come straight out of some Lord of The Rings artbook or something like that.
@drpapa26 Yep this is back when disney was good. If Walt Disney returned from the grave and saw shows like Hannah Montana and That's So Raven if will be so disappointed in what's his company has turned into. Maybe we should all sign a petition demanding that disney goes back to making movies like this
@peddle1993 You are an awesome person for making this comment.
There's not a SINGLE word you just said that I disagree with. I just know Walt would be upset to know how much of the Disney company operates now, as well.
Thank you for these statements; it's people like yourself who help me so much to keep my spirits aloft.
Quite simply, I believe that the Horned King is the most diabolical villain that Disney has ever shown on film. Instead of a power hungry sorcerer like Jafar, or an envious usurper like Scar - this guy is pure and simply, evil.
How much scarier can you get than an evil necromancer/complete monster that rules over an army of the undead?
I love the villain, love the movie, but when I saw the Horned King's servant, Creeper and that Gollum like character I could never take this movie serious and it always takes me out of the movie's seriousness and drama.
The Horned King owns them all; Hades has ADHD, Oogie Boogie is mentally ill, Hook is a coward, Pete is a retard, prince John is a mommas boy, Jafar and Gaston just have superiority complexes, Cruella is an insane bitch who seriously needs professional help and Kaa is just sad. The Horned King however is evil itself and everybody, including him, knows it and he'll be quick to remind you of it.
Well, let's see what the requirements for a good Disney villain are: 1) memorable design, 2) sinister voice, 3) ruthless personality, 4) a scary song/theme, and 5) a violent death. The Horned King scores well in the vocal department but I think the design is lacking. He's not as clearly drawn as other Disney villains such as Maleficent and especially in closeups he looks pretty disappointing. On the plus side, he's less of a buffoon then later villains such as Governor Ratcliff or Hades.
Okay everyone the next kingdom hearts game that is coming out next year (I think) is going to be called Kingdom of hearts Z: a Kingdom Hearts game that is a mixture of Nintendo, Sega, and Disney; so don't worry Aguyinahat the producer of kingdom hearts is going to put the black cauldron featured in kingdom hearts any time by now, plus not just Disney villains can be on kingdom hearts...
there can be Nintendo villains, Sega villains, and powerful heartlesses/unverses can be on kingdom hearts too.
The Horned King is the most evil disney villain ever yeah theres competition Maleficant and chernabog but Maleficiant had crap servants the horned king has creeper and bad-ass gywphins and tbh Chernabog got beaten by a town bell while the horned king suffered the most horrific disney death ever
@skspreeo10 Technically Chernabog is satan. and Satan CREATED the darkness that it took to create all these OTHER villains, so if it wasn't for HIS evil, the evil in others wouldn't exist. So, Chernabog is the most evil Disney Villain.
@PredatorBrendan I wouldn't call the film poorly made (i only saw some of it) since the animation was good and at least the story was kind of good but yeah i think the Horned King is probably EVERYONE'S favorite part of this movie because of the sheer amounts of Badass in him which was wasted on the anti climatic conclusion of the movie which hurt the movie alot since the Horned King is one of the best parts it had going for it.
Let me see if I got this straight. The skeletal liche-monster is seeking an ancient demonic artifact so that he can raise an army of undead warriors to exterminate all life.
How the hell is this a Disney film?!
No, wait... Why aren't MORE Disney films this badass?!
@Manyskins Because it was a box office disaster and almost destroyed disney. That's why. It was the treasure planet of the 80s, only it failed to do what treasure planet did (i.e. destroy disney films as we knew it. Well, for a while that is)
I'm not referring to the plot, but rather to the nature of the villain. Most Disney villains are pretty small time- steal the crown, steal the girl, rob the orphans etc-this guy wants to eradicate everything on the planet..
Besides a lot of the Black Cauldron's problems came from the fact that it didn't know what it was. Some parts of it were dark, mature and meant for older audiences (13+) while others seemed to have been added in to please the kiddies.
I only have one simple question... WHY THE FUCK WASN'T THE BLACK CAULDRON FEATURED IN KINGDOM HEARTS? Prydain would be the perfect setting! You have plenty of opportunity to make creative enemies and utilizing the surroundings, plus the Horned King would also be the perfect outlet for the heartless, his greed and lust for power would make him a perfect enemy. Then you would fight the evil energy of the Black Cauldron in an epic final battle, WHY HAVEN'T THEY DONE THIS YET, Reply with more ideas
Thank You! Someone who actually agrees with me. I can see Sora and Taran working together to take down The Horned King. There's plenty a villains that Disney and Square haven't used so far.
@AGuyInAHat my guess is that hes to "scary" (which he is) for these resent disney stuff that's probably why pretty much every enemy in kingdom hearts have been de-final fatasised (round eyes not scary looking at all) well the only ones that have a bit of the more serious looks are the final bosses but even there (in the first game)
*SPOILER HERE DO NOT READ ANY MORE UNLESS YOU HAVE BEATEN KINGDOM HEARTS*
Ansems guardian have those "jester ears" that kind of lowers his intimidating effect.
@AGuyInAHat The direct reasoning for Black Cauldren not being in Kingdom Hearts is because it is considered a Dud by the Disney Company. It took a crap ton of money to make it and didn't even come close to that amount in return sales, Duds don't make the video games. Disney would rather milk all the money it can out of the more popular. Infact only 5 of the 55 different villains from Kingdom Hearts are from the Disney Renissance. The others are from that era when Disney was alive.
@AGuyInAHat I don't know there are so many good ones that they haven't put in yet like Black Cauldron, Pocahontas, Oliver and Company, Great Mouse Detective, Atlantis and Treasure Planet are a few of them. They all have awesome setting and villains and if those aren't in KH3D or KH3 that will be a huge let down
@peddle1993 Those do seem like good suggestions, but I persoanlly think we should leave out Oliver and Company. It would be very interesting though to see Kingdom Hearts in Atlantis.
@AGuyInAHat Could be Disney doesn't have the rights to put Chronicles of Prydain things in video games. They probably only bought the rights to the movie adaptation of the books, way back when. I mean, I have no idea -- but maybe that's why? Because, yeah: would be awesome.
@DAYD111 if he was in the kingdom hearts games how would you fight him and defeat him then?? as he is the undead i dont think you would be able to defeat him somehow
I'm pretty sure they can. I mean, if Sora can take that down the black god Chernabog and Hades lord of the dead then I'm pretty sure he can take down the Horn King.
I remember renting this movie and having to shut it off because of how freaky the Horned King was. He still freaks me out. This is probably not the best video to watch at night...
@ryomi96 Join Maleficent? Tch; the Horned King needs to destory Maleficent, assemble his own Disney villain group and then give Sora all sorts of hell and be a REAL threat from the Disney villains.
@Johnlindsey289 I think it's darker than all of those myself. This, along with the Night on Bald Mountain sequence from Fantastia are the darkest, scariest animated features that Disney has ever produced.
Remember when the Horned King used the Black Cauldron's evil powers? When Ratigan tried to kill the Queen? When Scar killed Mufasa? When Ursula tried to take over the sea? When Medusa tried to steal the Diamond? When Lady Tremaine locked Cinderella in her room? When Sid destroyed toys? When Jafar tried to rule Agrabah? When Gaston asked Belle to marry him? When the Queen was jealous of Snow White? We don't get great Disney villains like them anymore.
@mkc92ingc I remember all of those. (Except Medusa... didn't catch that one) But I disagree... I think I'll be remembering Mother Gothel's child abuse for a long time too...
@Nekorin Medusa comes from a very exciting very underrated Disney mouse movie known as The Rescuers. Why don't you try that movie. It's very good. Even its sequel The Rescuers Down Under is good.
@mkc92ingc Or how about when Yzma tried to take over Kuzco's kingdom? Or when Shan- Yu kiled hundreds of people in China, or when Maleficent cursed Aurora, or when Sykes kidnapped Jenny, or when Shre Khan and Kaa tried to eat Mowgli, or when Clayton trapped all the Gorillas or when Captain Hook triad to blow Peter Pan out of the Sky or when Madam Mim almost destroyed Merlin in the Wizard's Duel or when Hades took over Mount Olympus or when Stromboli trapped Pinnochio? get better villains now!!!
Great movie, i saw it 2 times when i was 4 in it's original release. Horned King is awesome and he reminds me of Skeletor, anyone thinks this is a fun adult animated fantasy epic in the tradition of Heavy Metal, Princess Mononoke, Fire and Ice and Willow?
@Brollyhero99TOP10 Sort of, see they combined the Horned King and his boss Arawn Death-lord from the book series. Arawn used magic to assume the lich like form to inspire fear but didn't actually look like that. His true appearance unknown as he shape-shifted almost constantly. In the books the horned king is a very larged armored warrior with antlers who wore a lot of red.
I remember loving the film but being scared to death of the horned king... so I come on here and I'm already scrolling down because of the music.... D:
My favorite and the scariest Disney villain by far. Listen to "The Cauldron Born" by Black Pyramid. Good old psychedelic metal from my native home of Massachusetts. Pays good tribute to The Black Cauldron.
damn, i never saw the black caldren but afte seeing this dude maybe i should? it was pretty badass how he raised the dead & how he looks/talks, but i still have my preference for disney villians!
@eddievaliant1 Shakespeare. John Hurt and Jeremy Irons are trained thespians and nothing is more sophisticatedly sinister than a well executed line delivered by an english classical actor.
I mean could you imagine the Horned King or any other Disney villain being voiced by Jim Varney or Bill Murray?
I think Black Cauldron is the best disney cartoon ever made! so happy they finally released it on dvd. . . so many people that love disney never even seen this one, that saddens me. . . my gf never even heard of it, and she loves her disney!
The best thing in this movie. Actually, the only good thing in this movie.

Yeah, I always forget the mountain-sized demons xD

@migcosta17 Can't blame you, I have also forgotten a good amount of mountain-sized demons in my days.

Let me see if I got this straight. The skeletal liche-monster is seeking an ancient demonic artifact so that he can raise an army of undead warriors to exterminate all life.
How the hell is this a Disney film?!
No, wait... Why aren't MORE Disney films this badass?!
Manyskins 6 months ago 6
@Manyskins Because it was a box office disaster and almost destroyed disney. That's why. It was the treasure planet of the 80s, only it failed to do what treasure planet did (i.e. destroy disney films as we knew it. Well, for a while that is)
Anonomius0 6 months ago
@Anonomius0

Horray for Horn King!

Anyone else getting a Raiders of the Lost Ark vibe off of 3:52? The music in particular.
voidem13 6 months ago
I only have one simple question... WHY THE FUCK WASN'T THE BLACK CAULDRON FEATURED IN KINGDOM HEARTS? Prydain would be the perfect setting! You have plenty of opportunity to make creative enemies and utilizing the surroundings, plus the Horned King would also be the perfect outlet for the heartless, his greed and lust for power would make him a perfect enemy. Then you would fight the evil energy of the Black Cauldron in an epic final battle, WHY HAVEN'T THEY DONE THIS YET, Reply with more ideas
AGuyInAHat 6 months ago 50
@AGuyInAHat
Thank You! Someone who actually agrees with me. I can see Sora and Taran working together to take down The Horned King. There's plenty a villains that Disney and Square haven't used so far.
DAYD111 5 months ago
@AGuyInAHat my guess is that hes to "scary" (which he is) for these resent disney stuff that's probably why pretty much every enemy in kingdom hearts have been de-final fatasised (round eyes not scary looking at all) well the only ones that have a bit of the more serious looks are the final bosses but even there (in the first game)
*SPOILER HERE DO NOT READ ANY MORE UNLESS YOU HAVE BEATEN KINGDOM HEARTS*
Ansems guardian have those "jester ears" that kind of lowers his intimidating effect.
xanroth 5 months ago

They all have awesome setting and villains and if those aren't in KH3D or KH3 that will be a huge let down
peddle1993 4 months ago
@peddle1993 Those do seem like good suggestions, but I persoanlly think we should leave out Oliver and Company. It would be very interesting though to see Kingdom Hearts in Atlantis.

@AGuyInAHat I chose Oliver and Company cuz I really like Sykes as a villain

@AGuyInAHat Treasure Planet would be awesome!!! Silver's greed for the treasure and escaping the planet when it's gonna blow up, would kick ass!!
94xSuperAngel 4 months ago
@AGuyInAHat Could be Disney doesn't have the rights to put Chronicles of Prydain things in video games. They probably only bought the rights to the movie adaptation of the books, way back when. I mean, I have no idea -- but maybe that's why? Because, yeah: would be awesome.

the dutch voice of the horned king is the best voice ever for that character!!

The Horned King and The Headless Horse should be in Kingdom Hearts. Thumbs up if you all agree.
DAYD111 6 months ago 82
@DAYD111 if he was in the kingdom hearts games how would you fight him and defeat him then?? as he is the undead i dont think you would be able to defeat him somehow

I'm pretty sure they can. I mean, if Sora can take that down the black god Chernabog and Hades lord of the dead then I'm pretty sure he can take down the Horn King.

When I first saw the Horned King; he was my first true idea of what malefic, pure, corrupted, soulless evil was.
Looking back at him now, I think he might've been a precursor to the Lich King. xD

You know he could be perfect in Kingdom hearts he could join maleficent group to get black claudron to create heartless army.
ryomi96 7 months ago
@ryomi96 Join Maleficent? Tch; the Horned King needs to destory Maleficent, assemble his own Disney villain group and then give Sora all sorts of hell and be a REAL threat from the Disney villains.
Because the Horned King is THAT awesome. <3

@TheAltair4
Indeed and he's Skeletor's cousin. Do you think this movie is as dark as The Dark Crystal or Willow or Princess Mononoke?
Johnlindsey289 7 months ago
@Johnlindsey289 I think it's darker than all of those myself. This, along with the Night on Bald Mountain sequence from Fantastia are the darkest, scariest animated features that Disney has ever produced.
TheAltair4 7 months ago
Remember when the Horned King used the Black Cauldron's evil powers? When Ratigan tried to kill the Queen? When Scar killed Mufasa? When Ursula tried to take over the sea? When Medusa tried to steal the Diamond? When Lady Tremaine locked Cinderella in her room? When Sid destroyed toys? When Jafar tried to rule Agrabah? When Gaston asked Belle to marry him? When the Queen was jealous of Snow White? We don't get great Disney villains like them anymore.
mkc92ingc 7 months ago
@mkc92ingc I remember all of those. (Except Medusa... didn't catch that one) But I disagree... I think I'll be remembering Mother Gothel's child abuse for a long time too...
Nekorin 7 months ago
@Nekorin Medusa comes from a very exciting very underrated Disney mouse movie known as The Rescuers. Why don't you try that movie. It's very good. Even its sequel The Rescuers Down Under is good.
mkc92ingc 7 months ago
@mkc92ingc I've been wanting to see those, I hate to have a blemish on my Disney viewing record. XD
Nekorin 7 months ago
AGuyInAHat 6 months ago
Great movie, i saw it 2 times when i was 4 in it's original release. Horned King is awesome and he reminds me of Skeletor, anyone thinks this is a fun adult animated fantasy epic in the tradition of Heavy Metal, Princess Mononoke, Fire and Ice and Willow?
Johnlindsey289 7 months ago
Anyone like how the Horned King is voiced by the same guy who is the Chancellor in V for Vendetta?

Is the Horned King a lich or something?
Brollyhero99TOP10 7 months ago
@Brollyhero99TOP10 Sort of, see they combined the Horned King and his boss Arawn Death-lord from the book series. Arawn used magic to assume the lich like form to inspire fear but didn't actually look like that. His true appearance unknown as he shape-shifted almost constantly. In the books the horned king is a very larged armored warrior with antlers who wore a lot of red.

I often ask myself why great part of toon villains is often voiced by an english actor
eddievaliant1 8 months ago
@eddievaliant1 Shakespeare. John Hurt and Jeremy Irons are trained thespians and nothing is more sophisticatedly sinister than a well executed line delivered by an english classical actor.
I mean could you imagine the Horned King or any other Disney villain being voiced by Jim Varney or Bill Murray?
