harry did come up with a point. "Where is it gonna end?" YOu start executing people for jay walking or cuz your neighbor's dog pisses on your lawn? Just where do you draw the line? Sure Harry is careless, wreckless, unfit and fit to be a police in every way possible. and he knows his limitations. A good man does.
I like the fact the movie makes you question the justice system, then shows the radical way some people want to deal with it. Movies now don't make you think, that's the real tragedy.
A quick question...does anyone know which of the four motorcycle cops killed Ricca in the beginning of the film? I know it was'nt Davis (blonde hair)....just curious.
@socalltd Thanks for your comment. I was just curious, as it was never made clear in the film which one it was...the first motorcycle cop seemed different from the others, and Hal Holbrook seemed to indicate in the end of the film that Dirty Harry killed them all and he would have to recruit some replacements (!). Anyway, its a good movie that actually raises important issues regarding justice and the enforcement of law - the equilibrium between the two.
@fadethetrade Well my friend...all I can deduce that its not Sweet, as he was killed off earlier. I'm still trying to figure out who killed Ricca in the beginning!! I'm sure that all the motorcycle cops were killed at the end (Briggs says so), but which one planted the bomb...its either Davis, or one of the other two, or Briggs.
@10APC McCoy killed Ricca and the pimp JJ Wilson. Davis killed Guzman, most of Palancio's men (including Nick Royale) and also planted the bombs in Harry's and Early's mailboxes. I'm inclined to say that Grimes was responsible for the pool massacre.
@SheriffTankStoner I agree with everything, except McCoy! Its feasible he killed Ricca in the beginning, but he was acting on his own, not part of the vigilante group, but you would think there might be something more in the plot to confirm this. I don't think he shot the pimp either. Davis shot McCoy after killing Guzman because he was compromised in the garage, hence this clearly shows McCoy was not part of the vigilante group. Agree with Davis planting bombs, and Grimes using that SMG.
@10APC McCoy was the shooter in the Ricca and Wilson killings. I think in some ways McCoy was acting on his own but on orders from Briggs as a 'direct man' on the traffic stops whilst Davis, Grimes, Sweet and Astrachan were more covert due to their collective special military training.
@SheriffTankStoner Yeah....that's interesting. You're selling the idea to me. Now I want to watch the film again to try to pick out from the dialogue something that might indicate a 'command and control' link from McCoy to Briggs. Its entirely feasible that in a Cell, Davis would not know that McCoy was 'employed' by Briggs, therefore he carried out the SOP to remove the compromise. Yes...that would make sense!!! Thanks, next time I watch the film, I will look more closely at Briggs/McCoy.
@10APC The more I think about it, Briggs may have sent McCoy to his death because Callahan was getting a little too close for comfort. This may have been the real reason why Briggs assigned Callahan to stakeout but was forced by Captain Avery and others to bring him back to Homicide. Briggs knew that Callahan and McCoy were close and one little indiscretion on McCoy's part would've cause the whole operation to come tumbling down.
@SheriffTankStoner I don't think Briggs sent McCoy to the garage,as his death that way would cause more problems than solving.McCoy was on motorcycle patrol,if I remember correctly,he was nearly run down before the Guzman hit.I always thought that the McCoy character was there just to provide an initial 'suspect' for the audience, until Davis and Co were shown to be responsible. The thing is it still leaves the mystery of who killed Ricca, but I like your idea that McCoy done it.maybe on his own.
@10APC Yeah, McCoy took the spill prior to entering the garage (witnessed by the DeGiorgio/Casale stakeout team). As to McCoy being there, if Briggs didn't send him then, I wonder what he was doing there in the first place. Earlier in the movie McCoy made a comment to Callahan that 'we should've put our 20 in the Marines'. Unless I'm reading into the statement more than I have a right to, it suggests that McCoy and maybe Callahan were in the Marines prior to joining the SFPD.
@SheriffTankStoner Sometimes you can read too much from something in a movie, as its life condensed down to two hours. Why exactly McCoy was in the garage was never made clear in the film..it could have been coincidence or someone ordered him there, but I believe the film plot points to the former, rather than the latter (cop killing adds considerable complications to matters). It was a mystery to me as to who killed Ricca, but I do agree with you that McCoy is a strong possibility.
@10APC After seeing The Dead Pool (on Harry's desk there is a USMC coffee mug present) I guess it's safe to say that Harry was in the Marines and probably saw action in the Korean War, Another idea I had about McCoy being there was because Briggs didn't have enough faith in Davis to pull off the Guzman hit by himself (though we didn't see it in the movie, I would imagine a drug kingpin like Guzman would've armed bodyguards around his flat) and sent McCoy in as a back-up (unknown to Davis).
@SheriffTankStoner The problem with that theory about McCoy is that sending in a man, unknown to the Cell (Davis and others) to assist them will only get that man killed. When McCoy enters the garage, he was relaxed, almost nonchalant, when he encountered Davis...it must be coincidence. Guzman had one armed bodyguard outside the flat, and something else..Davis later said to Harry that they "began with the criminals the people knew"...they must have killed Ricca instead of McCoy. Which one?
@10APC That's exactly why Briggs sent him, He knew he could kill 2 birds with one stone by hitting Guzman and getting rid of McCoy at the same time. Briggs later admits 'There isn't one person we killed who didn't get what was coming to them' Harry retorts 'Yes there was, Charlie McCoy' Briggs asks him 'What would you have done?' Harry says 'I would've upheld the law' which suggests that Harry would've arrested McCoy rather than what happened. We may have seen one bodyguard (continued)
@SheriffTankStoner But there were probably a few more lurking about off-camera, A high-up drug kingpin like Guzman would have at least 5 more wherever he went. When Briggs said 'there was more where they came from' that suggests that eventually he would discard Davis, Astrachan and Grimes the same way he discarded McCoy and Sweet. Although it was never stated, Briggs was the one to call Palancio to say 'you're gonna be hit in a few minutes by hitmen dressed like cops'.
The scene where the rookies confess to being the vigilantes is the most chilling in the film. Throughout most of the film, these guys were portrayed as being happy-go-lucky, and to see remove that mask and reveal themselves as being cold blooded killers was disturbing. This was a well acted and directed film.
@RmFrRifleman i agree with 100% man. Magnum Force is the best out of all the Dirt Harry movies. The Enfrocer was NOT the Dirtiest Harry of them all. For me it's:
Man, classic scene! Well scripted, well spoken. Too bad we don't get to watch movies like this anymore. This is professional acting, not all the crappy actors of today's action movies. I stick to classics.
the best part of this movie is how he gets, back at the cops who were bad. but I like the part at 7:34. you're either for us or against us meaning is he gonna take thier side of killing innocent people. he would rather be the, god guy clint. imagine if clint eastwood was bad in this move, how would he character change?
every big city in america could use cops like these. It would save alot of wasted tax money. these guys would put the judges and the lawyers in the poorhouse.
The garage scene where McCoy was saying hello to Davis. Davis shot him dead on the spot. Davis figure that McCoy will implicate him in the future and took no chances.
@hopkins4545 Stay away liberal if you don't like what I post. Spend your time supporting gays rights or the rights of a tree worm in Alaska then wake up the next day and kill 4000 babies you sick democrat.
@NWAfan I'm illustrating a point. Whenever people are given too much power, thuggish authority, they inevitably get grandiose and misuse that power. By the way, I'm a Franciscan and have no political opinions one way or the other. I follow Christ's edict, that's it. God bless you.
I think the reason why he shot that cop at 0:05-0:08 is to let the rest of the cops know that he knows it's a cop who's been killing all of those criminals, that he's hot on their trail
@tributevocalist That's exactly what the reasoning was. And the reason Harry borrows Davis' gun after the champiopnship was decided was so Harry could extract the slugs for analysis.
Some cops become what they loathe. And some cops like Harry only kill a suspect if fired on. Either he's going to go or their going to go either way somebody's going to end up dead. Even in that situation I wouldn't feel good about it.
Another scene I like in this movie was where Davis sneeks into the Penthouse and knocks Guzman off,and im not sure about who through the bomb in the pool, but if you pay close attention earlier in the film you'll see that officer Mccoy killed Ricca and the pimp..
@650kyle That's what I think. But if McCoy was a part of it, why did Davis bump him off? He would know who's behind it, why kill him? I think it was a setup to have McCoy as a fall guy in case things went wrong...
This movie was on AMC a few weeks ago and it totally kicked ass. It talks about what makes a vigilante and what happens when their brand of justice goes too far. Dirty Harry showed the bad guys in this that a 'man's got to know his limitations'.
