You could always encounter another superhero and then "mistake" him for a villain. Maybe you could convince your less strong best friend to pursue a life of costumed crimefighting, stress the importance of wearing a mask, then fail to recognize him when you first see him dressed up. Perhaps should "good lord... it's a nazi clone of my best friend!" Just make sure you can fight better than your friend before trying this plan

Itim746 is right; and actually, the easiest way to get powers is to born witht hem, like I was. Of course, mine are also magic-based, like summoning and transmutation spells...I have read in some of my tomes that it's all energy conversion, and has something to do with the human spirit.
