Taylor (Heston) begins the movie as the ultimate disillusioned cynic and ends up representing humanities last breath. I would say "hope", but since he ends up essentially pushing the button blowing up the earth in a nuclear holocaust in the next film I guess the message is "screw it"
@starwarsrebel2006 Considering that he lived to be 84 and was in the final stages of Alzheimer's when he died, I'd say his lungs were plenty good enough.
If you die at 84, unless you were killed in a car accident or something, I don't care what the Health Cartel blames it on. It was old age.
taylor laughed b/c he was an exsistentialist cynic. he saw govt as self destructive & partriotism as folly. he also had disdain for landon b/c he see him as a yes man robot who bought into all the lies. this antihero character played well to the political climate of the late '60's.
the joke being that they were thousands of years in the future and "taylor knew it. meaning there was no US anymore . the earth devolved into planet of the apes (who knew it would only take 30 years in real life)
My take is that Taylor, aware that 20 centuries have passed, finds hysterical humor in the juxtaposition of honoring a lost comrade, versus the simple rationale of dispensing with protocol when necessary. Oh yeah, and then there's the fact that any director who wouldn't jump at the chance to let Charlie Heston show his laughing chops would have to be out of his mind...
From this scene, I deduce that America = Evil

@Joretrel111 Well, The Bible says that humans are God's chosen race, so it would not go over very well.

That laugh was driven by the irony of thinking there was a point to placing the flag for long-gone America.

I guess he knows know one will see that tiny little flag in the wide open desert...unknown to him, and his crew that they had returned home.
Wow its haunting chilly film with a powerful ending...

Man was Heston a heavy smoker or what? You can really hear him wheezing when he laughs. Sounds like his lungs weren't in very good shape.
