Good job, Tom! I came to the internet to learn about Satchel Paige and I only had to watch one video!!! (well, split into 2, whatever....) It's so sad that prejudice kept him out of the big leagues during his prime, but I'm glad he got into the Hall of Fame anyway!
!7, huh? I'm a little slow getting to the site, I'm afraid. Are you pursuing studies in film? Are you in college? If you are a baseball fan, there's an excellent documentary about Hank Greenberg that has received some favorable reviews during the last few years, since its premier in (where else?) Detroit.
@baboomr2 oh don't worry about getting to this site 2 years later. that's the nice thing about internet immortality! I am homeschooled and in 11th grade this year, to answer the question as to my age and schooling.
Very fine piece, Thomas, especially for a 15 year old. If you haven't already read SATCH, DIZZY, AND RAPID ROBERT by Timothy M. Gay, I recommend it. There are many myths about Satchel, butb this book seems to have researched thoroughly and acknowledged what was myth and what can be documented.
@impact36inc baseball-fever is a website you should visit -- they need you, too!
I think you'll find Satch did pitch to Babe Ruth. I believe he struck out the Babe, but also surrendered a late-inning homerun. Story is he met Babe at the plate and got his autograph.
Could have been a set-up, so much of barnstorming was about showmanship.
But no doubt Satch would have been great in the bigs (see next).
@impact36inc ..how great would Satch have been in the bigs?
In the '30s, Satch pitched an exhibition against Dizzy Dean of the Gashouse Gang Cardinals.
Afterwards, Diz, no shrinking violet himself, said: "Wish we had you on the Cardinals, together we'd win 60 games!"
Satch replied "Heck, I'd win 60 all by myself."
And how much would a pitcher be paid today for going 12-10 for a team with a 64-90 record? That was Satch for the Browns in 1952 and at 46 (or perhaps 49) years old.
for real, we can all do without the "country black guy " voice you used when quoting Paige . if you learned anything in your research ( of which you did a good job ), please know that because someone looks or sounds different than you it doesn't mean that they are less intelligent or to be made fun of - stupid men don't pitch over 2000 wins in the game of baseball .there is dignity and truth in the words and life of Satchel Paige that should be held closely by us all - as well as a ton of magic
Nice work. A bit of constructive criticism: Use your own voice when quoting. Of the greatest pitchers question, Sandy Koufax is often mentioned because of his dominant five years. Also, I was surprised that you did not mention Paige's three innings against the Red Sox at age 59 for the KC A's.
Congrats on your awards and keep up the good work!
That was really great. It was too bad that he could not pitch against the Major-Leaguers. I can't wait for your next project and keep up the good work.
This is a great video depicting Satchel Paige's baseball carerr. This past week my students and I read a short biography on Satchel. I would have loved to show them this video. However, we can't get youtube on the school's website. I did urge them to research more about his life and to view this video. Great job! It has me more interested in learning more about he Negro Leagues.
Satchel Paige and my dad Dempsey Hovland were long time friends. Satchel would pitch pre game for my Dad's Cuban barnstorm baseball teams and signed with his Carribbean Kings 1960.Satchel spent winter seasons on the road promoting my dads World Famous Texas Cowgirls (1949-1977) barnstorm basketball team, the young female athletes played mens rules against men.Dempsey also put his friend Satchel on a speaking tour I have fond memories of Satchel (Leroy) &his family at our home and on the road,
Do you know if there is any extant video of Satchel Paige?

The best part of this was the fact that your name is Thomas Gunn, which makes your nickname Tommy Gunn.

@pigfanman That is not my nickname and I would appreciate it if you would not associate my name in such a way. thank you

@kahlif79 I'm sorry you see it that way. this was a year ago, and I saw it as creativity not as a way to demean Satchel Paige's awesomeness.
