what an interesting interpretation. he leaves it half voice, almost mp-p for most of the aria and only opens it up toward the end. Its really unselfish if you think about it, because he doesnt eat up every note but rather leaves something to be desired. this is for the audience's sake.
Unique in his own way. Some people just won't like the timbre, too bad for them because this man is a gem of an artist. Fact is that even in his prime, Corelli had his nay-sayers. People didn't like this or that about his voice, his ennunciation, his timbre, his lisp, etc. etc. Every reason to think that Kaufmann will establish himself as a dominent figure on the opera stage for years to come, so, if you think you don't like his sound, try on a new set of ears or you are going to miss out.
I'm not crazy about his Italian, but what a voice! What people are calling false cover and over-darkness is actually just the natural color of his voice, and since a color like this is so rare in a tenor you're probably just not used to hearing it. But GET USED TO IT! This is the true dramatic tenor sound-- warm, thick, and resonant.
Jonas Kaufmann, Juan Diego Florez and Lawrence Brownlee the new "Three Tenors". My favorite: Kaufmann - he is in a different breed. What a talent!!! Congratulations to Jonas Kaufmann.
If you know what he's doing right now you realize how hard it is with that type of barritone voice. of course hes got it down. his vowels are amazing and i didn't hear falsetto at all. I belive he was trained by James King. My voice teacher was trained by him and i'm allowed to say that his performance was brilliant and any "opera enthusiast" doesn't have much of a say if they don't even sing
@zamirisrael That is absollute nonsense. He sang this aria that way at the Met last year and the soft singing could be heard throughout the house. This is singing for the ages.
It´s not bad at all! On the contrary, he has a very good feeling for this aria. Then you can of course allways listen to the difference in language, because of the fact that Deutschsprechen singers perhaps has a speciell caracther, regarding the Italian language. And that´s make a great difference to hear Franco Corelli or some other Italian tenor sing. The Italian language is so soft and quite the opposite of Deutsch.
For some reason all the uploads from this performance ar every low volume on my computer, so I cannot really enjoy it. Corelli is still my favorite in this aria.
We have heard this aria by so many tenors singing it from very well to fabulously well that I am not sure what Kaufmann should do with it and be different.
This is like the song Summertime or the aria Ebben ne andro lontana, not just a standard but a pop hit so worn out it has almost lost its musical value to our ears
@LohengrinT However, at least to me, these "pop hit" arias are exactly the ones I get to notice the most when someone sings and interprets much better than the rest of the singers. In rarer arias we tend to find good interpretations extremely agreeable, because we don't have many sources of comparison. In a "Summertime" or a "E lucevan le stelle", the inherent musical value comes off amazingly when we get to hear, respectively, a Price or Di Stefano showing "how it's supposed to be done".
You are correct and that is why most sopranos avoid the Callas or Sutherland repertoire but it gets too much with E lucevan - I mean it begins and I cannot hear the actual tenor singing - my ears and mind are infected with all the previous performances.
@LohengrinT Granted, "E lucevan le stelle" has been sung even by Bocelli! hehe... Anyway, I still make an effort to notice on one's particular performance and, paying much attention, one can notice how a Di Stefano or a Kaufmann are a distinctive class of singers. However, it's true that in the case of less "pop" arias that happened to be sung in an almost definitive way by Callas, Sutherland or Nilsson the challenge of the comparison is even greater as our sources are more "selective". :-)
I PREFER, PLACIDO DOMINGO( MOVIE TOSCA WITH RAINA KABAIVANSKA AND SHERRIL MINES _ AMAZING ALL CAST- VOICES , ACTION AND INTERPRETATION, OTHER MOVIE WITH DOMINGO, CATHERINE MALFITANO AND RUGGERO RAIMONDI - VERY GOOD AND METROPOLITAN OPERA - ONLY PLACIDO ) AFTER LUCIANO PAVAROTTI WITH SHIRLEY VERRETT in METROPOLITAN !!!!!!! WITH ALL RESPECT , THANKS !!!!!!!!

@BERNARDOANUK .

Now this could of course be a recording peculiarity, but Kaufmann here sounds rather dry and unresonant until he launches into his top voice --

There is no new Corelli. Franco Corelli was and still is a unique tenor voice and personality...

It simply doesn't work in opera hall at this singing volume. All you hear in this post
is microphone amplification, no more. Therefore go for recordings only and not
for live performances of "Tosca" with Kaufmann.(Heard at Vienna State Opera
in 2009)

anyhow indeed Di Stefano's in the 53 Callas Tosca remains the best in my ears - the diminuendi are so smooth and soft sound so easy
