A high pressure ridge centered over the Plains will keep temperatures in the mid-90's and bring moisture into lower Mississippi basin through Tuesday .
My first time hearing this band was in 1995.lol! Yeah, pretty late but it was this song on the radio in Florida. I've been a HUGE fan ever since! THE BEST JAZZ BAND IVE EVER HEARD!! I got all but 3 albums :)
The first time I heard "The Rips" I was there biggest fan and have been since 1985 and have met all of them on many occasions. Kim is great to hang out with.
A typical 80s movie intro! Driving through city different shots as film starts! Who gets wat I mean? Intro credits and stuff... Sum hobo in the park... lady walking.... cars driving... kids in park.... Sum random cat running by... Police officer... Walk, Dont walk... Taxis going by... City scape shot... camera rises to sky....... FILM TITLE appears...lol Classic!
My favorite song on the Live in L.A. album...these guys are so talented, timeless and so very unique. If we all had a soundrack of them running through our heads 24/7, we'd be much happier people.
Excellent post of this fine group, leading off with Russ Freeman, and the brilliant Jeff Kashiwa, so sad he isn't with them anymore, he was a staple to the group....glad he is having a fine career of his own though...Russ frickin rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saw these guys one summer in Mobile Al. I was sitting on the beach listening to a jazz station out of Destin Fl. Radio ad said The Rippingtons were slated to come to Mobile. Stayed a few extra nights and went to see them on the way home GREAT GREAT Can't wait till see them again
First got turned on to these guys 10 years ago - the best "drivin through the night" music ever- grinding guitar, horns, percussion - perfect match of rock/fussion/funk. God Bless You Guys - you bring joy through music.
@dukiesato Oh my God! Me too and in the daytime in the sun in a convertible driving through North Texas on Route 66! Can you imagine a working class London, England kid being able to do that! Spent a month driving along Route 66 as my vacation when I worked in Houston for 7 years in the 90's!
I was turned on to the Rippingtons in 1994 and that's when I became a Jazz fanatic. They remind me of driving down California highways by the beach with the wind in my hair with no worries! Awesome. It carries me through even now that I am on the east coast. I can Dream!
RTF are a completely different band than this, I like BOTH, yu have to remember ALL pro Musicians are in a business, they make money, styles are different but they are all in it to make money, not for the love of it. BUT I agree with you about the music this stuff here is commercial
Part of the "jazz" classification is the improvisational aspect of the music. In addition, the guitar and piano chord voicings are "jazz" style chords rather that straight rock or R & B. Smooth jazz, adult contemporary, pop instrumental are some of the categories. It's not purist jazz like Wynton Marsalis, Dave Brubeck, Charlie Parker, Chet Baker, etc. Nonetheless, these guys are jazz musicians and can hold their own with any "jazz" musician. And they sound great!

Jazz is too difficult to put into one category because there are so many different styles. Your friend sounds like a purist. Purist tend to focus on the old school stuff Bird etc. Some people might call the Rippingtons "smooth jazz" if you enjoy it that is all that really matters. You should see them live if you ever get the chance.
It's highly diluted jazz, but it's still jazzy enough to be classified as jazz. Fusion is indeed the best way to discribe this form of music. It's a blend of lots of styles. The main ingredient though is jazz.
This has to be one of the smoothest, most melodic songs done by the Rippingtons. The groove is so tight and in the pocket. It's become one of their classics or standards. It's too bad Jeff Kashwa is no longer with them, but the same thing was also said when Brandon Fields left. Eric Marienthal now does an awesome job on sax as well. I love this song!
Smooth jazz sux! Many smooth jazz artist are so predictable because the style is all cliche'. The Rippingtons however, have done it the right way! That's to say that there is still enough edginess to their music to keep it interesting. Other smooth jazz artist just serve up saccharine ear candy with no edge to it.
Man the rippingtons were some of the groups that started developing smooth jazz you can tell by the way this song sounds, it's just so smooth the way it sounds everything about it crys smooth jazz
Next to the supergroup that russ put together for the first album called moonlighting this was my favorite version of the band with jeff kashiwa on reeds and mark portman on keyboards.
OK. Where can you get the whole Live in LA DVD? I have been trying to find one for months. They are playing in Southfield Michigan, as are Koz, Spyro Gyra and lots of others June 22-24, 2007. I'm going! Saw the Ripps at Freedom Hill a few summers ago. They had Al Jarreau and Cassandra Wilson at that gig too!
I'm friggen shocked that no has made a comment about this amazing band!!!!!!! Anybody who calls them selves a musician has to appraciate the tastyness of this band and there sound!!
