Why because he's a tenor! And we'll take as many high C's as its humanly possible! hahahaha, I think its tradition to take the last one up, the first one is usually done on the F.
@SageFlores Again, that's not what Puccini wanted. I think he knew that tenors could reach the high C, but if he didn't write it that way he must had a reason.
You know the Cadenza at the end of La Donna e Mobile? The one that everybody loves and would be a crime not to do? It's not written in, it's a display of good singing and people love it, such are traditions
@SageFlores You can't make a rule of an exception, or else where are you going to stop ? Why respecting anything the composer wrote ? Unfortunately she is full of herself, thinks like a chicken, and has no respect for anybody. Yesterday in an interview at Romanian Tv when asked "what would have you told Callas if you'd have met her?" caressing her hair she answered "nothing more than to any other colleague". And further commented "what Callas drama are you talking about? We all have our problems". Not even the fact that Callas died at age 54 was a drama for Gheorghiu. No comment except for "shame on her!"
Opnamen!!
I've been a fan of Gheogiu ever since seeing her and her husband Alagna at the Lyric Opera in Chicago doing the production of Romeo and Juliet which they had created at the Met in the early 1990's. Besided having a great voice and being quite beautiful she is also a fine actress. I've heard many of the legendary sopranos of the past 60 years...all excellent vocal skills, and some good actors too....but only a very few had the looks and physical grace to make their portrails come alive.

She may be a good actress and beautiful but vocally she is inferior to many to most if not all of the internationally renown sopranos today and she has no respect for the sopranos (Callas) that came before her. She owes a great deal of her following to Alagna.
This performance had it all...quality in both artist...his gestures were superb and alive...Domingo,Pavorotten,Villazowi,etc are not that great with this aria...clear the wax from your ears and listen first, feel the movements throughout the aria...the expressions are all there and vivid the other tenors do no show them...

I don't doubt that Gheorghiu and Alagna are great opera singers but to be honest I think that Netrebko and Villazón are the better couple. When I listen to their O soave fanciullas it's sound better to me.
Weep, weep, sob, sob. So Alagna doesn't have a good a voice as Gigli. He still has a beautiful voice and it shows in this aria which he sings soulfully and his acting is very convincing. Anyone should be able to enjoy it, but if you can't, you can always turn on your recording of Gigli.
Guys we are talking about music, everything is re;lative , but Giovanni is right, a good singer is making feelings not just high notes, Please add Bonisolli and Corelli to the lis, plus Juan Diego, I am a tenor and I know how complicate is to be a godd one, is not just talenmt , in my opinion the main issue is with profesors, we do not have any more the great old school, Gigli, Bjorling, Caruso, etc, they were not models, but what we have now, Il Divo.., Cura, Villazon, just image and Marketing
There are alot of singers that can hit a high C. It is the quality of that note, their phrasing, vocal line/eveness of scale, coloring the voice, interpretation. You have a very limited understand of singing.I would suggest that you listen to singers like Jussi Bjorling, Renata Tebaldi, Rosa Ponselle, even Pavarotti to get a good idea about what great singing is.
Giovannifabuloso....you said...even Pavorotti, as if he just about qualifies, Pavorotti was without doubt the finest tenor that has ever lived, we will never live to see his equal, he could hit any note effortlessly, and with such quality.
I am a big fan of Pavarotti. He was in afct a family friend. I would say that he is the greatest of our time. Let's not forget about Caruso, Gigli, Schpa, Bjorling and DiStefano. Pava rotti would have said this himself. Remember it is not just a matter of hitting high notes. It is the quality of singing. How they hit the high notes, phrasing, coloring, seamless scale. Just because you can hit high note does not mean one is a great singer. Pavarotti was

Alagna has no voice. The role is beyond him vocally. He has nice feeling for the music, but nt the voice. She has just a pretty voice and face and nothing more. Great singing is a thing of the past. Listen to the Tebaldi/ Bjorling version to hear great singing.
Wow, that's brushing in an overly broad stroke indeed. Every single generation say that 'great singing no longer exist'... I guess the world is ending now, too, ay?
Here's a pearl of wisdom: enjoy the good ones today while they're still active. It's only self-serving to diss them now and then put them on the pedestal once they've retired. The active singers are the ones that can really benefit from the cheers, not the ones who aren't singing anymore!

I would not say that it is brushing with broad strokes. Could any of todays singers ever stand up to Jussi Bjorling and Bidu Sayao singing this same duet or Bjorling and Tebaldi. I think not. Alagna will never be in the class of a Jussi Bjorling, a Tito Schipa,a Beniamino Gigli, Caruso, DiStefano or even Pavarotti.Angela Gheotghiu will also never be in the same class as a Bidu Sayao, a Renata Tebaldi or any of the other great soprano's from the past.

Why would any of today's singers have to compete with the ghosts of yesterday anyhow? With you way of thinking... why do you even listen to any living singer anymore? Just to dwell in disappointment? Would even Gigli or Bjorling please you if they're still alive and singing today?
I hope today's singers don't take what we say seriously!

Would Gigli or Bjorling please me if they were singing today??? The answer is a resounding YES. GREAT SINGING THE LIKES OF A BJORLING OR A GIGLI SURVIVES THROUGHOUT THE AGES. THESES SINGERS WERE GREAT ARTISTS. ALAGNA AND HIS WIFE ARE NOT. ARE YOU A SINGER? ONE ONLY HAS TO LISTEN TO A RECORDING OF BJORLING AND GIGLI TO HEAR THE VAST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESES SINGERS AND ALAGNA. ALAGNA IS NOT AND NEVER WILL BE IN THEIR CLASS. ONE NEEDS ONLY TO HAVE EARS.
I agree that Alagna isn't that good, but just listening to old recordings of dead singers just makes you close-minded, and you have to be open to new singers, because, if you accept only Bjorling or Gigli, then, you just miss the beauty of a voice that may be as good or better than Bjorling or Gigli. Also, actually going to see the opera is much better than just listening to a recording.
Both great artist's in there own right but what makes this a great video is you can see how comfortable they are with each other you can sense the love they have for each other.
je pense que la Bohème est une des plus belles oeuvres de Puccini. ET, cette interprétation de Roberto Alagna et Angela Gheorghui est vraiment magnifique ! BRAVO !!!!
I wish more tenors would take the e note at the end of this duet rather than screaming the high c with the soprano. Puccini wrote it this way for a reason.
