as a garbageman i hated the sound of breaking glass. i was haunted by breaking mirrors. but this song doesn't sound like breaking glass. it's just _ cool :)
Yes you are onto something there. There's a lot of connections between the two, more than just the sound of the song. In sound and vision, Bowie has the line "breaking glass in your room again". the song was on Bowies album Low which was produced the same year that Lowe produced an EP called Bowi. It's not a coincidence.
@Suicyanide001 "Nostalgia is the future of the past".... did you invent this phrase yourself? I think it belongs in a collection of genius quotations!!
@danjp123 Yes I did Invent the phrase 'Nostalgia is the future of the past' where is this book and how do I get it into it, :) hahaha!! I love wordplay and paradoxes and stuff, thank you for recognizing my genius!!!!
The piano is so funny lovely....The whole video so loving the Friendshipness from Nick Lowe to bring 1979, with a little Disco Beat but also so different! Fantastic***
I just love this song, I bought it when it 1st came out when I was 10 years old, this was his 1st & biggest of 4 U.K hits (#7- 11th/3rd/78),, that was followed by Crackin' Up (#34-25/6/79), his 3rd & 2nd biggest, was Cruel To Be Kind reaching number 12 on the 25th-Aug-79, another 1 of his I love, & his last was Half a Boy Half A Man (#53-26/5/84).
I remember way back when, my brother who was a DJ at the time, played this song in his room one morning practicing his mixes. I could not get downstairs fast enough to find out who it was that was singing this song.
I work at a caravan holiday park in Kent as a groundsman, and when I strim around the caravans i have a tendency to break the occasional window when the strimmer hits a stone, which flicks up and hits a window. My workmates sing this song everytime they see me coming lol
I used to say that too, but now I'm more convinced there's nothing wrong with occasionally lip syncing. There is sometimes just no way to do a live performance, without the right stage and the right equipment, and have it sound decent. That being said, there's nothing more pathetic than botching a lip sync. It's like failing at failing.
@PoireauMan68 Hello there! Nice to hear another Lowe fan. By the way, there is a great clip of him playing with Darryl Hall - on "Darryl's House" - you can go to DH's website, (maybe on Youtube?). BUT, to answer your question: Birthday is March 24th 1949, (Walton-on-Thames - sort of a London, UK suburb. YepRock Records sells his CD's. It's a good company to support - they have REAL musicians, (Ian Hunter too) not the MTV type. Cheers from Canada!
I love the sound effects of the glass breaking! I remember some TV show he was supposed to be on back in '78, and he didn't appear, and my sister said she thought they had banned him because the song "encouraged vandalism" LOL
Just unbelievebable this is already 30 years old....Time stood still in some ways! What a strong and happy song with the brilliant funny piano.....It is and always has been : so I should say a classical with 5*****!!
I was sixteen when this first came on top of the pops one thursday evening. I thought it was the coolest thing. But the next morning at school, all my classmates were ridiculing it. Why? I still think it's great! Love the green black combo!
There, there, tommyboo21--they just didn't understand class when they saw (or heard) it. When I first heard this (about a year ago), I couldn't get it out of my head!
I think they did what was often standard for TV performances at the time. A backing track was used which had instrumental and backing-vocal parts in place, but the lead vocal was removed. That way, Nick could sing live, but the rest is the same as the recording. If you look closely, you'll notice a couple spots where the lead vocal performance is slightly different than the studio version.
Wow - thanks for posting that lost classic. Listening to that song after all these years triggered some neurons in my brain that had been laying dormant for way too long -yipee!!
Did anyone notice that it's The Rumour (as in Graham Parker and) backing Nick on this TV performance? Most of 'em are also on the record. These guys did everything with such good humour that any perceived arrogance is probably VERY tongue-in-cheek.
I noticed that too. I ? where I could get one. Guess I'm green with envy. Hey check out Bert Kaempfert doing "That Happy Feeling". They must have the same taylor.

3 people really really like the first few seconds of the song and were obviously pissed off. There can be no other reason.

The bass and rhythm are very similar to Bowies' Sound and Vision...i think that was intentional.
