@Introspektr I don't think so. I'm Asian (Filipino-Chinese to be exact) but our language doesn't require that. Somehow, I've got this feeling that people's idea of Asian is Chinese and Japanese alone. If not, then mostly. Anyhow, I think this little girl is good.
Nini's teacher has a very clever way of teaching piano. She names every finger with a name and by telling the girl 'Sandra goes home', the girl will know that that she has to press the 'Sandra' finger on the particular key to 'send the finger home'. The applauses encourage Nini to keep trying and reaffirms that she is playing the right note. Positive reinforcement works best when given immediately after tasks is done. Research has proven it. :)
Basically, I think she's freaking adorible. You can see how much she enjoys being able to control her own life--She's pushing the buttons, she's making the sounds, and she's getting happy by it. No one's holding a gun to her head, and it's not like she's sitting there screaming as someone slams her hands onto the keys. So, whoever thinks this is wrong...tell this little girl personally that her having a good time is a bad thing.
She is not happy about playing the piano. She is happy about the positive feedback she keeps getting. Every time she plays something, she turns to be applauded, immediately followed by her mom turning her back to the piano to play more. She would be equally as happy changing the channel on the television and being applauded for that.
geee.....RomieK123 i don't really think you'd understand. I mean u saw how happy she was when got the piano. The parents probably thought it should be best for nini and I bet nini thought it was the best for her too and besides when nini grows up and doesn't want to play the piano anymore than she should just tell her parents that she doesn't want to play anymore it's that easy. Oh and I love video alfredleungs!! She's soo cute!!!!! Thanks for putting it up
hi, you are a really understanding guy, nini played piano just for fun. so that, we let her played, however, she kin for it. that's why i have such a 30 days' show. anyway, i'm so proud for nini who is a genius indeed. i appreciate everyone of you submits your comment. best regards and thanks a lot.
she was really 2 year old by that time (video shooting time), but now she is 4 year old (2007). she was still wearing diaper and that was really 1ST lesson she had, hahaha
People bashing this video are just stupid. You don't need to understand chinese or even nkow about their culture to realise Nini is delighted to be playingthe piano. Her parents guide her lovingly and cheer and applaud when she gets the notes right - hardly an abuse sign! Nini's ubercute and her smile's the best witness to her joy of playing.
Go back and read the comments under "see all comments". If you knew Chinese (which I don't either lol) you'd see that she's really happy to be playing.
I think it's great that she starts to play in a young age. I am so sorry because my parents didn't let me start acrobatics or music in such a young age, I wish they had entered me to a pianoschool or gymnastic school when I was young because now it's too late for me to begin.
mattyuk1987 and Romiek123: cant you just be happy that a child WANTS TO PLAY MUSIC AND LIKES IT.
my nephew is only 14 months and he LOVES PLAY HIS DRUMS i got him for x-mas. NO ONE CAN FORCE A YOUNG CHILD to do anything. (especially the whole terrible 2 phase of a child. she would be kicking and screaming if forced)i applaud nini's parents for encouraging THEIR CHILD to play music or part take in art.. thank you for posting this. i really enjoyed it.
And if she really didn't want to do it, she would be crying now, wouldn't she? It's a sad world when ppl take teaching for forcing. That's why us Americans have a culture of musicians who can't really sing (i.e. Britney Spears) and kids who know nothing but watch tv. The Chinese have a standard of excellence that stem from very young and that's why they've got smart asians, classical geniuses, and acrobatic wonders. Learn more about the culture before you misjudge them, alright!
And when she turns around and the parents guide her back to the piano, that's guidance and is what all piano teachers do when kids lose their attention spans. Its not child abuse or pressure, it's called guidance. If your 2 year old walks in the wrong direction, wouldn't you turn them around to the right one? Is that pressure?
ROMIEK123, you don't understand chinese so you don't understand what they are saying to her. The parents are giving her a lesson by showing that each finger is a person, "big brother, big sister, sarah, little sister" and they are encuraging her to push the keys by helping the characters jump. "Big sister jumps...", they are saying and she pushes a key and the rocking back and forth is her rocking a boat.
LOL @ anyone that says this is horrible. It was a gift that the child greatly enjoyed. If you understood Chinese, it would be very apparent there is no forcing or coercing. It was a gift that her father bought and she loves it dearly. The only time she turned away and was turned back was when she turned to ask about a finger position, then the lady showed her which finger to use. Some people are stupid. Nice video, alfredleungs.
Can't you guys see how happy the girl is to be playing the piano? If she really didn't want to play, then she wouldn't be smiling, she wouldn't be playing notes. Plus, the teacher's methods aren't very pressuring, relating notes or fingers to family members - or something like that. My Chinese is a bit rusty.
I only wish I was introduced to the violin at that age - I'd be crazy good if I started that early.
Damn racists. I hate racists... and Americans. (LOL JK.)
actually, she felt happy to sit behind the piano, and once she had known the difference tones from each key. i agree with you if we force her to play but she would cried if we didn't let her touch the piano.so made her happy and we laughed.
do you know that kid requested to play by herself and that was the first time she sat on the piano stool.she really loves to play the piano as if a toy, that's why i said she is a genius and that video i took on last year spring. i also have another record about her solo after a month since then. however, she went back to china last summer and no more piano for fun. we miss her so that's why i upload this video.
we are not japanese but chinese, all we know the way of learning attitude from the beginning of our childhood. that is the culture of asian. and niu's piano solo will come soon. thank you.
its a bit worrying that you try to make this little kid play piano at such a young age.
SHE'S 2 YEARS OLD DAMN YOU. cant you see how worrying it is that your 'learning attitude from the beginning of our childhood' is nothing more than barbaric pressure onto such a small child.
i started playing when i was 7, and i personally think thats a reasonable age to start learning something like this. but TWO YEARS OLD? can the girl even talk properly yet?
There is a difference. Not just the language but if you were Asian you'd be able to tell Chinese/Japanese/Korean etc apart just by their faces. (But not that we're expected to..)
They're similar in culture but there is a difference. :]
well, thanks for your comment anyway. so you are too young to understand the kids, no problem but the video was taken under a pleasent atmosphere and no such panic or force to perform. what you saw just the adjustment of the kis's sitting posture.
@Introspektr I don't think so. I'm Asian (Filipino-Chinese to be exact) but our language doesn't require that. Somehow, I've got this feeling that people's idea of Asian is Chinese and Japanese alone. If not, then mostly. Anyhow, I think this little girl is good.

that's just wrong.
visibly forcing her to play. for god's sake, you shoudlnt force a little kid to do anything, let alone play an instrument.
there's several times where she visibly turns away and you physically make her face the piano again.
mildly sickening.

the little girl is turning towards the, im assuming, MOTHER to ask for approval and see if she is doing it right...
and then the 'mother' wants her to play some more probably because they were filming...
