If there is enough separation (distance) between the subject and the background, the flash won't reach the background and will only illuminate the subject.
@DVL1507 and @gamingslasher - Glad the videos are helpful, thanks for the feedback. I find this is actually easier to do in manual exposure mode so you can control all of the variables rather than the camera choosing them for you.
Thanks, that was a great tip. I am also not so fond of the people that nag about getting the background so much out of focus but at the same time you see pieces of the subject being soft. It is not worth it in my opinion. Thank you very much for this workaround. Will try it.

For Canon, I'd say the 100mm usm macro lens. Great lens and not too crazy expensive.
