Having shook his hand I can attest to his strength which is important because of the manner in which he depresses the strings and bends them for that unique sound. A genius at tunings and technique RT is the only musician I stood in line to meet. I wish this video were a bit lighter so we can see his fretboard and finger placement better. He told me anyone could be as good as him it just takes PRACTICE,PRACTICE,PRACTICE.
Humble, humorous, and clever. I should live so long. Loved you since Fair
Did anyone else besides me think for a while that he had abnormally massive biceps in this clip, only to realize it was the slightly-flesh-colored wall behind him, lol?
This tune ROCKS, Mr Thompson. Thank you for so many years of beautiful, beautiful music.
RT lets his fingers do the talking, how dare people criticise him, they should all be made to watch this, then given an acoustic guitar, and told to play something better!
Hey guys I recently performed this tune for a St Patty's day concert on a 12 string guitar and it was quite a handful. Check it out sometime if you can.
Thompson's great, if you do not know Pierre Bensusan's playing, check out "merrily kissed the quaker", "return to fingal" and some more here on youtube. One of the finest celtic players.
His version of dame lombarde off his first album is fuckin class too, dont think theres any vids of it on youtube but if anybody had any id be grateful
Though completely unrelated in style, Kirt Kirkwood of Meat Puppets is also one of my favorite guitar players. I had heard a little bit of the 'Puppets before I saw them and liked them pretty well, but when I saw them in 1986, I was in the presence of genius; some of the most amazing, wondrous and technically brilliant playing I had ever seen, by anyone anywhere.
This guy is so amazingly good live, the mind stops-- the complex travis picking, the fluid improv, the emotioanl gravitas, the wit. The God Emperor of acoustic guitar and a lifetiem of guitar in two hours.
im learning this... its so much fun. It takes a bunch of concentration. I like his version with the slight bends, bending that F# into the G, sounds so cool. Like Zeppelin?
Upon re-listening this i noticed some tempo issues on the first time he plays it, but after the first time it's noticeable he has "warmed up" and entered the "flow" :P
Imaginative, innovative interpretation, colourful, surprising, Irish trad meets southern blues meets cajun - very enjoyable to listen to, I love that slide...and the bold bass.
You can see RT isn't really happy with his performance here - but technically it's groundbreaking stuff. This performance was obvious before he got his less bassy Lowden guitar. I think in the vid he's playing a Martin O-style, and the heavy bass strings drown out the melody sometimes.
THOSE 3 DISLIKES MUST'VE BEEN AN ERROR, i DO DECLARE!

Thompson is playing his 000-18 Martin. I agree that he isn't thrilled with his performance, but I sure am.
DD Glad this is back up. Thanks Jon.
