I was on the Dew in 69. Names I remember is Cranston, besides the Captain. We did a rescue at the Lansing Shoal lighthouse. Sea wall was about to break in bad weather, waves were to big to get close, so three of us went in a lifeboat to get the guys off of the lighthouse. Waves, snow, it was awesome. I was a diver, so I was on the bow of the lifeboat, with engineman at rear and Quartermaster in middle. Someone took a photo, it was in the Charlevoix paper. I wouldlove to find a copy of that!

Yeah I loved sundew. She was always a part of Duluth. She was born in Duluth, and she stayed in Duluth. But I would rather see her breaking ice in the Duluth Harbor than sitting quietly as a museum. The Alder sucks! It replaced one of Duluth's most loved Coast Guard vessels.
I know how you feel. I lived near the USCGC Acacia in Charlevoix, Michigan. About the Alder, it is better than no Cutter at all, in Charlevoix there is no replacement to our beloved Acacia, so be happy.
But the Alder never rescued the only 2 survivors of the Carl D Bradley, it wasn't built in Duluth, and it never helped the Edmund Fitzgerald turn around when it had problems with its rudder.
Murph, great job on the video. just kinda stumbbled across this. Need to come up so we can go to the cabin so you can wear the Worlds Greates Grandpa Hat. peace out
Hello to all the served on the Sundew. Now, I am really feeling old at 45. I was stationed on the ship from 79 to 80 and it was without a doubt the most amazing experience of my life. I learned responsibility, teamwork and leadership while there before heading to ASM school. I hope everyone is healthy and enjoying their lives.
Whats up Livingstone? How could I forget get all the stuff that went down in Grand Haven? I'm still in the CG if you can believe that! STA New York is BUSY!!!!!!!!!!
Not too much on my end. I somehow smartened up and got my Real Estate License. Hard job but I make my own hours and what not. Geat job for the person who does not like to get up early. Shoot me an email on here with your contact info or myspace page.
Yo what up Murphy? It's Livingstone Not sure if you remember who I am but I was on the Sundew with you. I got booted for drinking too much. Hit me up sometime!
I once sailed with the Canadian Coast Guard and caught up with the Sundew in 1988 in Norfolk. This was while I was on the CCGS Samuel Risely. I got to tour the Sundew, and had the chance to party with the crew for a couple nights.
We actually decommissioned her in May of 2004. I added a few pictures of the Alder along with a few I took during my 3 years there. It took me a few days to scan all the pictures. I might make another one since I still have a lot of pics.
bm2 murphy this is po2 lores wife and i love this video...i miss all the guys from the sundew...thayer,augusta,napoli,rudman the whole damn gang...love you guys...keep up the good work

I had the option of staying in Duluth to commission the Alder, but I decided 3 years was long enough so I transferred to Milwaukee - which was great

The Acacia is the same class as Sundew, isn't it?

Yes, the Acacia is in the same class as the Sundew.

But it is doing its job. Someday the Alder will preform some great deed to people in need just as the Sundew did.

Hey Nick, Is the Sundew still in service?
I know she is an older vessel.
I once sailed with the Canadian Coast Guard and caught up with the Sundew in 1988 in Norfolk. This was while I was on the CCGS Samuel Risely. I got to tour the Sundew, and had the chance to party with the crew for a couple nights.
