Ifyou haven't read the first book, you can't really understand why he has feelings for his blood sister. And you must read the whole series to know how the love story will end.

Without it, the story would seem (to me at least) kind of pointless, since for me it's mainly this relationship that sets it apart from similar stories. As for Alec, I'm not sure whether there was a need to write him as gay,but since his struggles are sidestory (and not that prominent) I can hardly believe you'll get too side tracked by it.

It's not as Twilight, which is quite simple to understand whether you have read the first or not, it's a really amazing serie, and everything is connected to something. Idk how to explain without giving too much away. But you really have to read the first book to understand:

- first: the world where shadowshunters live in, its rules and so on ...

- second: the main complicate plot :p
